Disagree with your second point. Anything starring Bill Murray, Steve Martin or John Candy hold up just fine today (not so much of a fan of Ghostbusters, though). Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is timeless, it's a shame it was rated R because of the car rental scene, otherwise, I think it would've been much bigger of a hit if it was PG-13 (albeit that scene was classic).
