Seems like they do.
538 gives us a 43% chance of making the CFP with a win-out, for what that's worth. I think the actual odds would probably be lower of getting actual human beings to select us to that top four, given our poor brand name and all.
Best point of comparison I know: in 2007, Michigan drops an opener to an FCS school to open the year, then gets crushed by Oregon the following week to fall to 0-2. Eight straight wins later, they're #13 in the country. Under similar circumstances (lose to an FCS school, lose to a now-ranked team by 3, rattle off eight straight pretty convincingly), we haven't been able to crack the top 20 yet. Right now we're all of two spots ahead of Stanford, who has three losses, including a home loss to us by four touchdowns as well as an even bigger blowout loss at UW.
Stuff like this is an annoyance since we're a program that's only going to get really good sporadically and won't be able to sustain it (thus, when we're good, the fact that we weren't good three years prior is going to limit those scant immediate opportunities as well), but I just sort of accept that WSU is never going to ship a national title. All of that aside, I guess I would like to think that it's possible for a narrative to set in if we rattle off three straight wins at the end against top 10 teams.
My more realistic hope is Rose Bowl, which will still be awfully difficult. Thankfully today's game has little effect on those hopes, though obviously I'd still like to win it.
