Well played imo

I've had various people be irritated at me for not buying christmas/birthday cards, I don't get the point when you are there in person to wish them the same thing, surely they are for sending to people you don't see around that time?

For the life of me I can't imagine someone getting irritated with someone else for not sending/giving a card. That's super weird IMO. I appreciate incoming texts, etc., wishing me happy birthday, but I'm sure as hell not keeping score of people who I don't get them from.

I can't stop laughing at what a cold-blooded headline this is for an obituary.

I'm all for **** like that when the person should be remembered for a significant moral failing from their life, but Marty lost some January games when his teams were a solid favorite. Not quite the same thing.

Moorobot has not posted here in over four years.

WTF, I knew he had disappeared but that feels like an impossibly long time since he last participated at all.

I was the opposite. But someone once asked him and he said “it doesn’t matter” instead of answering.

Thankfully the work saga seems to be coming to an acceptable ending. Late today, I was offered the transfer I've been agitating for. And they don't seem to have tried to touch my salary even though it's something of a step down in rank. Timeline TBD, but hopefully it won't be too terribly long now before I can fully wash my hands of my current mess.

Thank you. It comes as a significant relief after a rough period professionally. Last Friday, I had still been made no promises...and then, without warning, I was demoted via group email to dozens of people. "So, we're restructuring. Here's who will report to who now when this new hire starts on Tuesday." And then every supervisor in the section was named except for me. It was like the unfunny version of Sideshow Bob announcing who he wouldn't murder, then only not naming Bart. My subordinates found out in the same email that I did that they wouldn't be reporting to me anymore. It came in as a late Friday news dump, and though I tried to get someone on a call to talk to me, I was unable to, so I was just left to stew about it all of this past weekend. That was surreal to me. Obviously I understand not planning around me when I've stated an absolute intent to move on from my specific area of the office, but surely I should have been spoken to individually before something like that was broadcast in a group email.

I texted a couple of people on my team on Monday morning just to be like, "by the way, definitely got 100% blindsided by that email on Friday and had no idea that was coming." They were furious on my behalf. Usually I would not be the type to deliberately poison the well in that way, but after that development I was just in "**** these people" mode. They told me that there had been buzz among them wondering if there had been some incident on Friday that they didn't know about, where there was some reason that I was suddenly being memory-holed. But that didn't make sense to them since I was stuck in public-facing hearings the entire day.

Beyond the tackiness of how that was handled, I became concerned about the fact that this would essentially force me, beyond February 2021, to claim a demotion on my resume, and if I was going to hit the market soon that was a point of great concern; as you can imagine, I didn't much care for the thought of it looking like I had been a failed manager who was demoted on the merits. And Monday would have been my last day in February to tender notice and still finish out a proper notice period (allowing me to leave in good standing and cash out my accrued vacation) by month's end. I pushed head of HR to find a few minutes for me on Monday, explained the situation, and got him to agree that if this transfer didn't work out then I could still claim the title I've been working in into March, alleviating the time pressure. The call relieved me by having a strong undertone of, "Please just give us a couple more days, you're going to get this and I'm just not able to officially tell you yet." And then I did get that word late in the day on Wednesday.

It will be nice to get a fresh start. I've been doing the same type of work for about 8.5 years now, so I could also just use the freshness of some new projects.

I’m probably way late to the party, but I stumbled into the GOAT Steamed Hams parody.

Still dying laughing.

I continue to think of this (surely drunk, since-deleted) Twitter post periodically.

It's just way too funny to me to think of one prominent NFL beat writer talking to another that way.

Sounds like things are going well with WOAT in charge of my old section in the office.

Just seven weeks into his tenure, sounds like over half the staff is trying desperately to get out. Colleague tells me that she has learned to just keep her mouth shut and go along with whatever the marching orders are while she looks for her escape hatch, because another person on staff already went to HR about him and has been getting treated worse ever since.

So it's going the only way it was ever, ever going to go. If only someone had raised caution of this exact thing! He won't last forever - I really think that even having a friend in a high place has to have some sort of reasonable limits - but it does feel 100% inevitable that the office will let a lot more needless damage occur before they pull the plug, because doubling down is all that most people in positions of authority know.

While I feel quite bad for the many people I care about who I left behind, at least I'm safely tucked away and just get to hear about the ongoing disaster from a safe distance.

It's St. Patty's Day? Sneaks up on you when you're not a college student.

Probably a good day to reboot this ridiculously stiff match from Uncensored '96.

He looked like that, and that match was quite easily the best one-on-one match I ever saw him in. All he had to do was shoot and destroy Regal's face for real.

Finley/JBL opening mania is another really great singles match he had

24 hours later, same colleague tells me she's skittish about it but is going to go ahead and go to HR.

It won't help. But I support this dude being on the receiving end of the largest number of HR complaints possible.

Isnt your company gonna get sued if people are being punished for going to hr?
