Based on information I received yesterday and today, it appears that my range of outcomes has strangely become strongly polarized to "really great" (significant, exciting promotion) or "really terrible" (stay put and be left to directly report to the worst person in the world after years of really liking my now-former boss)
They, uhh...went with option B. Losing out on the promotion was not to my preference, but at least the job went to someone who I like and respect. The whole, "So, you're going to just stay put and we're going to bring back the worst person in the world and you'll report to him," that's a lot more problematic.
I promptly set up a meeting with HR to inform them that that dog ain't gonna hunt, that I'm going to graciously offer them the chance to transfer me to another division if they do it quickly enough for my satisfaction, but that under no circumstances will I even consider continuing long-term in my present position.
So far they've acted like there's a good chance they'll accommodate my demand to move me out of this situation, but given that the worst person in the world actually started in our office this week and I've actually had to interact with him, the clock is ticking loudly. I'd rather transfer since I'm happy enough with my salary (or was, before the position itself became unacceptable), but am perfectly willing to hand in my notice if my little and loud demands aren't met.
