Yeah thatís the ride it took me on too. Insane call. And it was upheld. Itís like they instituted a policy in reaction to the NFCCG ending that they would probably still refuse to fix the NFCCG ending with if it happened again today.

Any belt marks ITT?

Finally splurged and bought a decent Pakistani knockoff of the Ď87 IC belt. Have wanted one since I was a kid.

That's pretty slick. I'm just not sure where I would put it if I had one.

Re: Wrestling OT/LC Thread: 346 Days Until Christmas

Here's a scenario that happens a fair bit, in various incarnations:

Me: I don't like sci-fi.
Person: Oh. But you'll actually love <specific favorite of theirs> even if you don't like sci-fi in general.
Me: <watches movie, think that it sucks>

Not only is the person eventually proven wrong that I'll like it, but they're not even making a good-faith, person-specific read. They're just saying that it's a sci-fi movie that they really love, and therefore it will transcend usual genre taste for someone who doesn't care for the genre. THAT IS NOT HOW TO ****ING MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS. Good grief.

I'm not long removed from a sequence of the following:
Me: I recommend Remains of the Day. It's one of the best movies that not enough people watch.
Other person: Hmm, I just watched the trailer and it didn't look very good to me.
Me: <watches trailer>
Me: Well, I just took a look, and I don't find the trailer to be unrepresentative. I love it, but if it didn't look like your thing then it might be better to take a pass.

^ This. This is the way to approach recommendations to skeptics. Obviously a scenario existed where I would have viewed the trailer and went, "Wow, terrible trailer. That doesn't really represent the movie well at all," but an honest viewing of the trailer didn't allow for that.

Semi-related, I've recently felt a strong civic duty to leave descriptive, specific Yelp/TripAdvisor/Google etc. reviews of businesses I either loved or hated. With so many terribly-written or fake reviews out there, I feel I gladly feel an obligation to help set realistic expectations for future visitors.

Re: Wrestling OT/LC Thread: 346 Days Until Christmas

A friend of mine has no use for most classic films. He just thinks they're totally unrelatable since they seem like they're set in such a foreign time. This would be a time when I felt comfortable telling him, "Yeah, I get it, but still watch 12 Angry Men. There's absolutely no reason that your era preference would make that movie unwatchable for you." I'm still waiting on him actually doing it, though I took pains to reassure him that I'm not one of those people who is just saying that I love it so much that I find it transcendent. I won't, for instance, push Rear Window on him even though it's absolutely amazing.

It feels like review compilations are largely a lost cause because people only feel motivated to review things when they want to give it 1 or 5 stars, never mind the fact that those should be the least common ratings that something gets. Exception for Uber/Lyft drivers I guess, who I will liberally give five stars to unless they've given me strong cause to do otherwise. I don't want to mess with their standing with the company unless there's a really good reason to.

I find the tension in classic movies to be generally spectacular, and a timeless quality.

If your friend can't go into a movie and view it in the scope of when it was made and what the culture was like, they'll likely not appreciate it for it's true worth. I don't care for sci-fi or Star Wars fans in general, but I finally got around to watching the first 2 last year. Looking at it from the viewpoint of someone watching in the 70's/80's, I could appreciate how innovative and ground-breaking it was, and understood how so many could feel so strongly about it.

If we're talking mainstream films, probably none that stand out

More like niche things like Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, etc.

To be more honest - I just lump sci-fi in with fantasy/anime, and feel like trying to deep-dive into it is too time-consuming. Everyone I know that professes they are into such genres are REALLY into them - have tons of merch, quote them all the time, binge-watch all the time, etc., so I get turned off by that (not that I need to DO all that). Just feels like too much tribalism to me.

Sci-fi isn't really my thing either but it's just too big of a genre to say you don't like it. Same with fantasy. Anime isn't even a genre it's just cartoons essentially. I've watched 3-4 big/well known anime series and thought they were ok at best and the generic shouting **** does my head in but you only need to go look at well known anime films to see there are some amazing stuff in different genres.

I don't/haven't watched GoT is that not just fantasy? Dragons and fairies with the occasional boob doesn't make it grown up.

Watching it from the viewpoint of someone now though they're pretty terrible aren't they? I tried watching them again fairly recently and zzzzzz.

Re: Wrestling OT/LC Thread: 346 Days Until Christmas

I dig fantasy more than sci-fi; it's just more to my tastes. Not that I'm big into it, but wizards and elves and the like are just more appealing to me than things like space travel.

I do agree that a person who likes movies at all should be able to find something to enjoy in just about every major genre and subgenre, so I definitely don't just denounce sci-fi entirely. It's just my least favorite major genre in that it's the one where I can find the least material that I'm able to really get into.

12 angry men is one of the easiest recommendations of all time. Its a masterpiece and the watchability for anyone at any time is through the roof.

Re: Wrestling OT/LC Thread: 346 Days Until Christmas

A couple of days ago I informed a friend that there are two inarguable rules for how to behave properly during the fall:
1. Never, ever talk about your fantasy football team unless somebody asks you directly about it.
2. Never, under any circumstances, ask somebody about their fantasy football team.

He did not seem to care for this proclamation, but most of the world's problems would be solved if people just agreed to slavishly devote themselves to compliance with those two rules.

It would be in my top 10. Godfather and Godfather Part II are my top two without close competition. As golden-era classics go, I probably lean toward Rear Window over 12 Angry Men, both top 10 films for me.

I helped organize a fantasy football league in my department

Half of them turned against me for offering a slightly-tilted trade that got accepted by the last place team (who punted on his team after the 2nd round of the draft) after someone else cried foul (who blasted out a group email congratulating himself for doing so) and the commissioner reversed it. Now they "gossip" about me/my team on the other side of the floor (according to someone not in the league) & refuse to trade with me whatsoever. One who had agreed to a side-bet on our weekly matchup welched when it came time to pay up (we bet a sandwich at a local place). Definitely ruined a lot of the enjoyment for me (and it's the only team I own that isn't sucking).
