Got a chuckle out of this exchange.

Fellas,

Do yourself a favor and search “I PLEDGE TO WORK FOR FREE” on Twitter.

It’s glorious.

CMBYN was fine. I was bored at times, interested at others, thought the film was tied together well enough at the end to make it a somewhat positive experience overall. CMBYN and Get Out are probably more like 5a and 5b for me. Get Out is a bit of a struggle for me since I'm a bit of a rube when it comes to recognizing and interpreting symbolism.

Phantom Thread and Darkest Hour are the only ones on the list that I actually feel negatively about. Even so, I might be inclined to give DDL the Oscar for his performance in Phantom Thread. It is a weak field for Best Actor. (Haven't seen Denzel's nominated performance yet.)

I tried playing Kingdom Hearts recently. They don't age well.

I'm really not the target market for a film like Dunkirk. War films that are so heavily action-focused just aren't my thing. Objectively, the execution was solid and I have no significant criticisms, but I didn't particularly enjoy it.

Final BP rankings:
1. The Post
2. Three Billboards
3. Lady Bird
-gap-
4. Shape of Water
5. Get Out
6. Call Me By Your Name
7. Dunkirk
-smaller gap-
8. Phantom Thread
9. Darkest Hour

The wife and I watched Dunkirk yesterday. Very good though I didn’t love it. If the film aimed for almost 2 hours of uninterrupted tension, then it met its objective.

I enjoyed Roman J. Israel, Esq. Surprised that there seems to be a firm consensus that it wasn't very good. Certainly another well-deserved Oscar nomination for Denzel.

I didn't manage to go full eyebooger, but I did see every nominee for Best Picture/Best Director/Best Actor/Best Actress in advance of tonight's show.

Was busy with other stuff, so didn't actually get to all of the nominees in the major 8 categories, but saw most of them. Will get to the others shortly.

Did not like Roman J Israel at all. Denzel was good though.

I will say that the film's primary inflection point was bungled, but it didn't cause me to stop enjoying.

Best picture thoughts:

Tier 1
Call Me By Your Name

Tier 2
Lady Bird
Get Out
The Post

Tier 3
Dunkirk

Tier 4
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards

Tier 5
Phantom Thread
Darkest Hour

By far the weakest year this decade. Such a disappointing list.

I don't know how Mudbound didn't get a BP nomination, especially in this weak year. Great movie and it ticks a lot of the BP nominee boxes.

I really just couldn't find much meat in CMBYN, even as I digested it. I thought it might be one that would get better for me in the days that followed the viewing, but it just didn't work for me. Well-executed character arc for the main character, but not much else to make me feel like I should revisit it or anything.

I haven't gotten to Mudbound yet, but I, Tonya easily deserved a BP nod over Darkest Hour. I, Tonya was a lot more of a serious work of art than I was expecting.

The "In Memoriam" montage ignores John Mahoney? Are you ****ing kidding me?

Paxton died 13 months ago and I believe he was in last year's.

From the Wikipedia page for last year:

Quote:
Beforehand, Aniston paid verbal tribute to actor Bill Paxton, who died the day before the ceremony.
Okay, I suppose that's fair.

Alright, well I assume that "superior set of nominees in 2019" is a pretty big favorite.

Im not the biggest oscars nerd. Fair to say the results sans Best actor/Actress/Supporting actress were quite surprising?

No, results followed the pre-show buzz closely. Del Toro was considered a lock for Best Director.

Got a "$1 for a month's subscription" offer from Gamefly again. I'm very out of the loop when it comes to video games right now. Offer is good until 3/25, so I may just glom onto it then and try to get almost a month of MLB The Show like I did last year, but do any gamers ITT have recommendations of must-try games from the past year or two?
