Honestly, me neither. I can't think of another grammar/punctuation rule like it where I just know it to be the rule but don't know how to defend it.

Re: Wrestling OT/LC Thread: 346 Days Until Christmas

Grammar Girl says:

Quote:
Compositors―people who layout printed material with type―made the original rule that placed periods and commas inside quotation marks to protect the small metal pieces of type from breaking off the end of the sentence. The quotation marks protected the commas and periods. In the early 1900s, it appears that the Fowler brothers (who wrote a famous British style guide called The King’s English) began lobbying to make the rules more about logic and less about the mechanics of typesetting. They won the British battle, but Americans didn’t adopt the change. That’s why we have different styles.
Not too surprising that the rule is a relic without any particular grammatical purpose.

Re: Wrestling OT/LC Thread: 346 Days Until Christmas

Snow is fun in Houston because it won't stick to the roads, it'll be gone quick (it'll be in the 60s tomorrow), and it hardly ever snows. Allegedly, the last time snow actually stuck to the ground here was in 2008.

It was funny dropping the daughter off at her high school. Everyone is playing in the snow like they were little kids, because it hasn't snowed since they were little kids. Since I'm a transplant from AZ, it's actually the first time she's ever seen falling snow. She's seen snow on the ground before, but only when she went skiing.

Hey Gus, my company is thinking of relocating to Houston in the coming years. Help convince me to not be terrified that any house I buy ends up underwater within 5 years

Snow is pretty and lovely, and is perfect for a day when you don't have to drive anywhere. Unfortunately that's a majority of days for most of us, so...

But yeah, being in non-sticking snow like Gus described is fine.

Snow is fine. It's the wind that sucks. But I'm in the Canadian Prairies.

LKJ,

Quick favor: Can you change this thread title to “The Annual Army Navy Football Classic”

It’s the same thread we’ve used for years, and now well past the 113th edition:

https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/4...3/index14.html

Heading to the game tomorrow.

I only have title-editing powers in this forum. SE mods (or oranges I'm guessing) are the only ones who can do that.

Re: Wrestling OT/LC Thread: 346 Days Until Christmas

The ending? It was gross and embarrassing. Seahawks have firmly established an unfortunate trend of acting that way too often after emotional losses. Pete Carroll has to take some of the blame for it at this point, as I don't know of any effort on his end to clamp down on it. FWIW I didn't see specifically what the announcers were referencing about what Michael Bennett did, so can't really speak to that.

Specific to Quinton Jefferson, I also don't know specifically what got him ejected, but I will say that his run-in with the fans speaks worse to the problematic fans than to him. At first someone threw a drink or whatever that narrowly missed him, and his reaction was just to confront and scream at them, which is fair play. I would have found it completely inexcusable on his part that the next projectile caused him to charge toward the stands before being held back, but I saw on Twitter and have now seen on the replay that it was a ****ing banana, which makes it more understandable that it set him off that way. (Sure glad that people succeeded in holding him back and getting him redirected to the locker room at that point though.)

Re: Wrestling OT/LC Thread: 346 Days Until Christmas

Just saw the video of Bennett rolling up on the lower leg of the Jags' center. Good grief. Terrible, and probably about as suspension-worthy as that recent Gronk incident that netted one game off.

There are a lot of good things about Bennett the person, but there's zero excuse for that garbage.

You can look at the bright side--if the house you buy wasn't flooded by Harvey (a storm that dropped 40+" of water in 2 days in some areas), it's probably not going to flood ever.

Then again, people thought the same thing a couple years ago, when we had up to 25" of rain in two days.

Re: Wrestling OT/LC Thread: 346 Days Until Christmas

Bought an Apple Watch for my wife as a gift. She liked it at first, but then realized that she's around too much technology, so she asked me to return it.

So I figured I might as well try it out for myself for a few days before I do so. It's the older model (series 1) as opposed to the new ones with GPS and cellular. It's also the 38 mm model, which is too small for me.

First, the bad. The battery life is atrocious. I currently use a Fitbit Blaze. I can get three days out of that watch. The Apple Watch is down to 20% by the end of the day. And it seems to take longer to charge.

Other than that, it's definitely a better smart watch than the Blaze. With the Blaze, I get text notifications, but that's it. With the Apple Watch, I can get notifications from email, sports, and a bunch of other apps, in addition to the text notifications. Plus, I can send texts with it.

Like the Blaze, the Apple Watch requires the phone in order to track distance. Though that's only true for the Series 1 model. I believe that both Series 2 and 3 have built in GPS.

Unfortunate that I got the old model, because I wanted to try out swimming with it.

It's a cool little gadget. Not sure if I'll end up getting one for myself. The series 1 was $269, which is only a little more than the Blaze. While the series 3 is $329. Maybe I'll sell my Blaze.

But I also realize that, after a year of using the Blaze, I use almost none of the Blaze's fitness capabilities. While I am a cyclist, I actually track my cycling using other apps, not the Fitbit's. So a part of me thinks that a smart watch is, in general, just a toy.
