Further on the subject of whether or not it could ruin the series for eyebooger: I think that's a difficult thing to do unless you do something that makes a key character retroactively look worse. I think that all of the remaining central characters in GF III (basically just Michael, Kay, and Connie) all behave in a way that is perfectly consistent with what those characters were previously.

If you go the route of retconning a bunch of the material that preceded it (see: the Roseanne finale), I can see that hurting your view of other stuff that came before it. If the quality level was just a clear letdown but that's the only issue (see: the Seinfeld finale), that seems easily shrugged off to me.

Like, to put grades on the relevant movies, I'd probably have it something like
Godfather - 10/10
Godfather II - 10/10
Raiders - 8/10
Last Crusade - 7.5/10
Godfather III - 7/10
Temple of Doom - 5/10

I do think that my view of GF III is significantly helped by the fact that I went in expecting a garbage movie based on its rep, and came out thinking, "Well it's definitely not THAT bad." It's understandable how people at the time saw it as a letdown, and if I viewed it that way I'm sure I'd be less charitable to it. As it was, I went in under no illusion that it could possibly reach the level of its predecessors.

With regards to GF III. I first rented it back in 1991 or so when I was 16 and was just emotionally destroyed by how disappointing it was. It wasn’t until I bought the trilogy on Blu Ray a few years ago that I actually watched it again and realized that it isn’t that bad of a movie. Although LKJ is right Sofia Coppola’s acting is off the charts bad.

I've avoided GF III because the consensus is that it's horrible.

Except that "horrible" is not really the consensus. The consensus is that it's a big letdown from the first two. IMDb rates it as a 7.6/10, and Rotten Tomatoes has it at 67%. Relatively strong rating on IMDb; tepid but still "fresh" rating on RT.

Yeah, anyone who says it's horrible either hasn't seen it themselves or is grading on a curve. It was nominated for Best Picture, it's pretty clearly not an objectively horrible movie.

There have been some horrible movies nominated for Best Picture.

It's odd to me that it pulled seven Oscar nominations but Pacino didn't get one. The one thing that's legitimately great about that film (aside from the usual Godfather musical score) is Pacino's performance.

This is 11 years old so I'm sure some might have seen it but I just watched and really enjoyed it so thought I would share since there seems to be fans of both itt.

The Oscars began as a marketing ploy, lol. Maybe it stayed that way more so than people think, lol?

That’s criminal.

1) Goldfinger (basically the UConn women’s hoops of this discussion, the perfect Bond movie, anyone who has it not #1 is just being a hipster)
2) Skyfall
3) Goldeneye, but I could be convinced on some of the other older ones.

I've only seen the Daniel Craig Bond's and Tomorrow Never Dies. Zero desire to see the other ones, hated Brosnan and felt like from the clips I've seen from previous Bonds, that the character was near-invincible and cocky. Therefore, I hated Brosnan/hate the idea of Bond (just like I hated Princess Bride for its protagonist, even though that was the joke). Craig's Bond had some grit and vulnerability to him at least.

They're all decent Bonds in their own ways (except Dalton ldo). Agree that Brosnan's Bond was much more of the flashy playboy rather than Craig's asskicker, but both work well enough and I think the stories they were cast it both fit their personalities well. Goldeneye is over the top cheese to a large degree but it works. Craig's stories are much more "real", if that makes sense. To me they're both fun.

1. Goldfinger. It isn’t close. I know that opinions can’t be wrong, but if this isn’t your #1 then you are doing it wrong.

2. Dr. No. I just love this movie for some reason.

3. Moonraker. I know that it is when the series was at its apex of cheesyness, but this one always puts a smile on my face. I liken it to Rocky IV. It isn’t the best of the Rocky movies, but it is far and away the most rewatchable.

Seriously, how is this possible? As punishment for this egregious sin, you should be forced to watch The Room followed up with the GAB from 1991

Action movies are generally not my top choice of what to watch. I watch in perpetual fear that a ****ing car chase scene will break out.

I admit that I should probably give more of them a try. Not being a sci-fan fan (I'm less positive on sci-fi than action), I didn't really expect to like the sci-fi classics of the early 80s, but Terminator, Terminator 2, Alien, and Aliens were all tremendous. I can like any genre if it's done well enough.

I watched the original Die Hard and enjoyed it. I didn't actually progress further than that. It's been enough years that I would probably want to rewatch the original before progressing into sequels.

But really, I'm not exactly anti-action; it just lags so far behind comedy and drama for me that I rarely make it my choice, and over time that means I've seen a lot less of it.

Usually I do require some sort of plot, but I actually really enjoyed Predator despite it being utterly ridiculous.

Are you guys silly? I have watched every Bond movie tens of times, read every book (by Ian Fleming), and consider myself an expert in all things Bond. If your list isn't identical to the following, you are wrong.

1. Casino Royale - This is not "recency bias". It is legitimately the best Bond movie, and although Craig is my favourite Bond, every single thing about this movie makes sense and works (minus the whole ELIPSIS argument). Bond movies tend not to be really tense in any real way, as you pretty much always know what is going to happen, but the way Le Chiffre is made out to be so hated that you don't care how he dies is some nice writing for the franchise.

2. Goldfinger - Often used as most people's #1, this is a super good movie, too. I think most of the reasons why I love this movie are probably pretty consistent with everyone else.

3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Despite Lazenby being pretty meh as James Bond, this movie gets better with every watch. It maybe has the second best theme song, some of the coolest locations, and an actual Bond movie with real emotion. The epilogue to it is harmed by Lazenby a bit, and I would have loved to have seen Connery in this role, but it holds up. It's a Christmas movie, too, so go ahead and watch it this December.

Bond power rankings:
1. Craig
2. Dalton
3. Connery
4. Brosnan
5. Lazenby
6. Moore

Oh, and for the record, Moonraker might be in the bottom 5.

I don’t disagree that based on the writing and acting, yes it is bottom 5. But it is just so over the top campy that I love it. Also not to date myself but it is the first Bond movie that I ever watched as a very young kid on the local pay cable channel

All three are excellent. Perfect time of year to watch too since 1 and 2 take place at Christmas.

For the love of god don't go past 3 though.

It does warm my heart to have caused this defensive opening line, but obviously I lack the knowledge base to attack it as such.
