Crazy world series. Coming in the mets had the big SP advantage while the Royals had the big BP advantage. To have the Mets starters get the ball into their closers hand with the lead 3 times and lose all 3 of them en route to losing the series 4-1 is insane. Dude has to be sick at himself.

The games were really good too. I think if the names on the jerseys were LA and Boston and everything played out the same people would be going nuts about it across the media.

That's the spirit

The Mets could totally make the series again in the next 15 years. No worries

I'd like to see how the off season plays out but hit me up first of the year. I'm pretty confident they will be awesome pending they use the influx of new money wisely

I'm not blaming the dude. I'm saying it's pretty crazy that coming in everyone said ny had a huge SP advantage and KC had a huge BP advantage and the series actually played out to highlight that so much. I've never really seen a series play out so spot on to the script (as rest of the mets BP was bad too). Mets starters crushed, KC won the series at the BP level. It's just nuts.

Because I

A) tend not to bet on things outside of my control i.e. sports

And

B) when I do, I don't do it with zero knowledge. A lot can change between today and when the season starts. What if Buster breaks his wrist washing his pickup truck, or Madbum gets kicked by a cow he's milking?

If you want to bet when the season starts, I will most likely be confident enough to do so. I'm not interested until then

You said the mets won't make it back so you are free rolling

Plus if Buster breaks his wrist they will make a rule that nobody can use their wrist

I didn't say the Mets won't make it back, I said they could totally make it back in 15 years.

I look forward to my next job that hopefully won't involve having to reprimand a woman with schizophrenia about trying to steal an entire bag of candy on my desk that was one per customer (healthcare)

The Mets fans leaving before their team's final ab of the season was such a great moment.

I'm about to start in on Birdman immediately after posting this, but this post came to mind and it made me curious as to which films won best picture that you've seen and find inadequate.

I think I would classify the ones I've seen this way (pretty much just listed backward chronologically, no other order)...

Great movies, very deserving even if in some cases I might have preferred others in the category
No Country for Old Men
The Departed
Return of the King
A Beautiful Mind
Gladiator
Braveheart
Schindler's List
Silence of the Lambs
Rain Man
Godfather II
Godfather
Lawrence of Arabia
The Apartment
Ben-Hur
All About Eve
Casablanca
It Happened One Night

Really good, but think it clearly shouldn't have won its year
Slumdog Millionaire
American Beauty
Forrest Gump
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Good enough I guess, but symptomatic of a weak year
Crash
Million Dollar Baby
Chicago
Driving Miss Daisy
Amadeus
Rocky
On the Waterfront

Decent, but certainly shouldn't have won its year
Titanic

Don't see the big deal, didn't particularly enjoy, shouldn't have won IMO
Unforgiven

You've seen more than I have, and I can't disagree with a lot of what you've posted.

Only thing that jumps out initially is American Beauty in the "Really good, but think it clearly shouldn't have won its year" category. Its competition was Cider House Rules/Green Mile/Sixth Sense/Insider. What should have won? I'd put it in the "Good enough I guess, but symptomatic of a weak year" camp.

I'd also put Slumdog Millionaire in the "weak year" group.

Also I'd put Gladiator in the "very good, but shouldn't have won" group. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was way better imo.

Funny, with both of those (American Beauty and Slumdog) I would regard them as being fairly strong years. With regard to American Beauty, I honestly would only put it ahead of Sixth Sense among the nominees that year. I did enjoy Sixth Sense, but it doesn't hold up at all. To more directly answer, I would probably give it to Green Mile, but I love The Insider.

I would have gone for either Benjamin Button or The Reader over Slumdog. Thought Slumdog was on a pretty similar level to Frost/Nixon and Milk. Enjoyed Frost/Nixon a decent bit as I tend to enjoy political movies, but I'm more partial to the Anthony Hopkins Nixon movie.

I would have assumed that to most film buffs, my most objectionable placement would be Cuckoo's Nest not making the top category, but I seem to like that one less than most people do, and didn't like it nearly as much as Dog Day Afternoon, which I thought was awesome.

Crouching Tiger was fine; I admittedly didn't seem to be in the right frame of mind when I watched it. I wasn't expecting the fantasy elements and was going "WTF, this movie takes place in a world where gravity is optional?" Then I never actually watched it again. I barely remember it now. Might be worth another look someday.

I actually don't have a lot of problems with what you said in the first two paragraphs. I guess I just viewed those years' movies as weaker overall in general. If The Insider and Benjamin Button had won, I wouldn't be complaining.

I haven't seen Cuckoo's Nest. My familiarity with critically acclaimed movies maxes out this decade, and generally decays pretty linearly as you go further back in time.
