I would normally be very pessimistic about any sort of spin-off (despite certainly having been a fan of Frasier), but all the reviews indicate that this one works. I'm excited.

Would it be dumb to watch Better Call Saul before Breaking Bad, even though it's supposed to be a prequel? Saw 1 ep of BB randomly, so I'd mostly be going in fresh.

I don't think it is meant to be necessarily a true prequel rather than just a show that operates in the same universe as breaking bad, which just happens to take place before the events in breaking bad do.

You'll see what Saul is doing in the years before breaking bad but it's not like you'll see scenes showing Walter White teaching his chemistry class and stuff.

That being said, if you haven't seen breaking bad yet and are looking for a show to watch, definitely put that up at the top of your schedule. The first couple episodes are a bit slow, after that it ramps up for the entirety of the series.

I mean, none of us know much about Better Call Saul yet, but my initial guess based entirely on the premiere of Better Call Saul is that this wouldn't be a great move. Some of the best things that showed up in the premiere episode were little (and big) moments integrating the BB world with this one, and those would have been meaningless to you as someone who basically hasn't seen any of the initial series.

My opinion, probably watch Breaking Bad first.

Guy in the office next to mine is such a jackass. I remember back when we were both law clerks (holding licenses to practice law), we were put on a project that was being headed up by someone on the support staff. He would bitch constantly to me about how it was bull**** that we should be answerable to her.

"Do you really think that we should have to answer to a case analyst?"
"We're answering to someone who our bosses put in charge of a project. Who cares what her usual title is?"

Now that we both worked our way up the ladder a bit, he clearly feels like people in that position are answerable to him as if we're their bosses (we're not; we do work with them, they do help us, but they don't report to us). Not only will he summon them to his office, but he'll just holler at random passers-by and say, "Hey, could you send <whoever> into my office?" Dude, get off your lazy ass and go to their cubicle if you need to discuss something with them. Your legs work as well as theirs do.

It really is the bad beat of a lifetime that this guy, literally my very least favorite person in my ~200-person law school class, somehow ends up working in the specific office directly next to mine about 50 miles from said law school.

Two more snow days for me out in Boston - 5 in the last 11 work days, and another 6 inches coming Friday. I don't look forward to the catch-up work (aka phone calls I have to make). Not having a full work week in what will be 6 weeks including next week feels weird. I'm irrationally worried I'll get chewed out for taking a floating holiday next month after all the "free days" this past month.

At least he guarantees you look good in the eyes of your co-workers in comparison.

Yeah perhaps. A co-worker in a past life did this job to perfection for me...this was before law school. He called in sick constantly. My boss literally wondered aloud right in front of me if this guy was an alcoholic and that's why he called in sick all the time, but he never fired him.

I called in way, way less often than that guy (he probably did it 4x as often), but I still felt especially free to do it as needed at that job where I generally almost never call in sick for any other employer. Figured that guy was creating a buffer and basically gave me permission.

What is considered calling in sick alot? I call in once, maybe twice at most a month (not consecutively). We only accumulate 1 paid sick day/month, but 4 people have been fired in the past 6 months for calling in sick too often (granted, they called in at least 5-6x/month, no doctor's notes, etc.)

Twice a month as an average sounds super high to me. I'm on over three years with my current employer without calling in sick once.

To be fair, we're surrounded by the elderly and many others coming in with airborne sicknesses and have no windows/ventilation (and many just don't like working there)

Not sure where you work but sounds similar - my wife works at a rehab facility for the elderly and I'll agree her co-workers call in sick all the time, for exactly the same reasons. She has one co-worker who always does the same routine [ On Thursday she starts complaining of a headache and calls in Friday with a "migraine." I know migraine's can be debilitating - you know - when they're real.

My wife on the other hand is the exact opposite much to my chagrin, she has to be completely bed ridden to miss work, and even then it's a struggle to convenience her to rest.

To be clear, if it's a health care facility for people with below average immune systems, by all means a person should stay home when sick. It's not doing anyone any good for the sick person to just press on.

I'm honestly mostly just lucky to this point; it's not that I'm exhibiting a ton of toughness to never call in...I just haven't gotten seriously sick since about April or May of 2005 (had awful food poisoning). That was an extremely inconvenient illness since it caused me to call in for three straight days on my first week at that job. Thankfully the employer didn't just cut their losses right then.

Had a date with a really cool, cute girl tonight.

Her favorite movie, in which she could quote ad nauseam?

Spoiler:
THE ROOM

I've never seen it, and she was visibly disappointed.

Don't make the same mistake I did, LKJ. See The Room. Meet Girl Of Your Dreams. See The Room again.

I love that the producer of 'the room' now promotes it as a spoof, even though it was never intended as such. The film must have grossed millions at this point. Gotta love that can-do attitude, taking the most sour of lemons and turning it into serendipitous lemonade. There's a lesson for all of us.

Just watched the movie Chef on Netflix (it's available for streaming now). It's simple, but enjoyable. Jon Favreau is the star and then some other big names (Sofia Vergara, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson) have smaller parts.

Recommended viewing if you're in the mood for something light and feel-good.

So there's a CVS near my place that I actively avoid for the most part for the exact reason that I'm about to state, but this time I went there because it's the closest place and the roads are bad right now. Background: I lost my CVS card many years ago. Yes I suppose I should go to the trouble of getting a replacement, but I've found it easier just to avoid this one specific CVS.

The reason I avoid is that I just had at least the 6th or 7th occurrence with this same cashier (who apparently never leaves or something, I've run into her morning and night) who I sigh heavily when I see.

Her: "Do you have a CVS card?"
Me: "Yeah, can I give you my phone number?"
Her: "Okay, go ahead."
Me: "Area code 360..."
Her: "630."
Me: "No, 360."
Her: "6, 3..."
Me: "My area code is 360."
Her: "Alright, 6..."
Me: "No, I'm sorry. It's 3...6...0."
Her: "360?"
Me: "Yes."

I'm not exaggerating about the number of times. It is seriously always a minimum of four corrections before she stops insisting that my area code starts with six.

It's time for me to realize that I'm going full Burdz by even attempting to get the card discounts rather than just saying that I don't have a card. There's no way that a couple of bucks off is worth having that exchange. In mid-exchange I always want to just bail and say "never mind," but I figure that will come off even more abrasive than continuing to politely correct her, and at that point I might as well take the discounted money for my trouble.
