I remember back when I was picking a hockey team I got it down to the Red Wings and the Leafs. The only reason the Leafs won was because they were on TV all the time (Hockey Night in Canada). Bad choice. I was also strongly considering New Jersey.
I started following hockey when a 20 year old phenom strapped on the red and green , easy choice for me seeing how differently he moved compared to all the other goalies. Was really cool to see a 20 year dominant career start and end with the same team. I've gotten lucky for cheering with teams that have had super duper stars and been pretty good/exciting with the Devils, Giants, and Niners. Got to see the majority of the careers of Bonds, Young, and Brodeur.

There's always hope for a pro team to get there one day. My persistence with the Seahawks eventually paid off with at least the one title, and hopefully I can eventually see the same with the Mariners (and maybe even the Sonics?). Really, even though some teams get mired in mediocrity or worse for really prolonged periods of time, the only ones who are mostly hopeless are the ones with terrible owners that ruin everything.

I don't know the Leafs' situation, but the Eagles and every other franchise not owned by Daniel Snyder or Al Davis's kid are drawing live to eventually bink a title.

As far as I can tell Cubs fans can just barely keep from spontaneously combusting from sheer stupidity, so it's probably just as well that the Cub slump continue.

People who persistently go back and continue watching sequels of good comedies are weird to me. Have they somehow not gathered that almost every comedy sequel is some mailed-in garbage that isn't worth watching, and only gets made because the great unwashed keep going back and making them into profitable movies?

In general the masses seem to be averse to the concept of using online reviews to avoid really horrible movies or products. It only takes a few seconds to punch the name into Google and see that 3/4 of people despise it, yet they waste time and money instead.

My doubts about Dumb & Dumber To were confirmed, but on the bright side, there were a few funny moments, i had the entire theater to myself and it was an extremely nice setup with leather armchairs for seats plus lots of legroom

Even if this was a person's stance it seems like they'd at least know what was probably going to happen with a comedy sequel by now. Even lab rats stop going back and touching the thing after they learn that it's going to give them an electric shock.

I get what it's like to have morbid curiosity about a movie, to think "this will probably suck, but I sort of want to watch it anyway..." but the only way I'm making that a theater experience is as a social thing where I get suckered into it because others want to go and I don't feel strongly enough to veto.

I'm guessing the leather armchairs and the lots of legroom would have been available to view anything else. Theater to yourself is nice though. My sister-in-law manages a movie theater back in WA, and when I lived there I could go down there the night before opening night and watch movies they were about to premier a day before the public got to them for free, because they had to run the reel once through to make sure it could run problem-free from start to finish (seems like a bull**** reason, but the reel actually did **** up badly during a viewing like this of Burn After Reading, so I guess it's worth it).

Washington Football Team, Caps, Wizards, and Orioles fan here, so I feel the pain of those that cheer for championshipless teams

I have vague memories as a 9/10 year old the Redskins being awesome but my best memory of a Redskins Super Bowl win was my dad and I being at Disney World on Super Bowl Sunday and having the place virtually to ourselves. There was no line for anything, it was surreal even in my 10 year old brain.

The Caps break my heart every year on cue, usually in soul crushing fashion. The Orioles have been good the last two out of three years and that has been fun after never seeing them in the playoffs since I've been a hardcore fan. I haven't reached the soulcrushing point with them yet when they lose, but we're getting close.

Wizards are giving me more excitement than ever. I love watching them play, but in the NBA I know the chances of them making it to the finals is virtually zero, but like my Orioles above, just the Wiz being a playoff team is good enough for me for now. The first year I really got into basketball was the year the Wizards lost to the 72 win Chicago Bulls in the first round. After the series Jordan said "The Bullets are the team of the future." We didn't know he meant his future.

I haven't seen DaD To yet, but the original was the first movie I ever saw in a theater without my parents. As a 10/11 year old I made a fantastic choice of making this my first movie to see in a theater. Not long after, I bought my first ever CD...Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt.

A person's manhood is directly correlated to his unwillingness to blame officiating when his team loses. In the most extreme circumstances it's probably okay...but, for instance, in 24 years of being a Seahawks fan and seeing a ton of losses in that period of time, I would call officiating the clear #1 primary factor in three losses ever (1998 at NY Jets, 2003 at Baltimore, Super Bowl XL). Obviously it's a secondary factor a fair bit more commonly, and obviously it's fine to gripe in the immediate aftermath of any bad call, but if the team goes on to lose and the officiating wasn't truly the #1 reason for the loss, STFU.

(This rant directed at the world at large and not at anyone ITT.)

The reffing pissed me off on Sunday (Eagles vs Seahawks). Not saying it's the reason why we lost, Seattle was clearly the better team, but it didn't help matters. I'm not sold on any of the Eagles QB's, they're serviceable in this offense, but I still think we need someone better. If we add that and a few more pieces to the D, we're championship contenders, imo.

Yes, I refer to my teams as "we" get over it.

Meh I do "we" too. It does seem like the type of thing that would unnecessarily irk me though.

I'm surprised how many people it does irk, actually.

"Do you play for the team?"

Piss off.

That's well-documented. The more I think about it though, the most ridiculous thing is people getting in heated arguments over sports teams, which is all completely subjective. As in legitimately getting angry or hating someone that likes a rival sports team. I can understand hating people that support extreme political or religious beliefs opposite to yours when such beliefs are causing active harm and death on others, but sports, no, absolutely never worth arguing over.

The "we" thing only irks me when people do it for college teams when they didn't go there.

Meh, once you allow people to hate on others for "extreme" political or religious beliefs you allow people to also define extreme, and that's going to have wild variance.

Not that I've never gotten heated in a political or religious discussion myself, but that's only because I'm a flawed being. People who have a militant need for agreement on those issues, people who basically demand that they get to live in an echo chamber where they hear nothing disagreeable, are generally pretty terrible.

As far as sports goes, of course we can deconstruct essentially the entire thing and dismiss it all as silly. It doesn't pass any sort of reasonableness test on any level to even care whether a pro team wins or loses. And yet, we're drawn to it anyway, so here we are. No reason not to be passionate once we've already crossed the irrational threshold and embraced life as a sports fan.

I'm here late at work. The janitor came into my office, took my garbage out, and replaced the bag. I wasn't sure whether it was appropriate to say "thanks" or not. I mean, it benefits me to have my garbage taken out for me obviously (just usually happens in between my work days), but he's not working for me, and I thought it could be insulting or something. I also thought it could be rude NOT to say thanks.

Naturally I took the middle ground and mumbled something that couldn't possibly be discerned as actual words, all while burying my face in something not overly important in order to justify the appearance of the seemingly distracted and incoherent mumble.

Well, just to put your mind at ease: the whole sequence occurred over the course of 10-15 seconds. Then I found it funny, and also found the work I'm doing to be dreadfully boring, and figured I would procrastinate another several minutes making a post about it.

I won't exactly lose sleep over it.

And the paid testimony of former and current local sports stars shouldn't influence choice of lawyer or restaurant but local advertising spends billions every year on the premise that it does. Hell, people get into fist fights all the time as a result of encountering fans of the rival team. The visceral, primal us vs them dynamic is one of the most powerful human motivators.

I started eating Cocoa Puffs because Brian Dawkins said it was his favourite cereal. I ate Chunky Soup because McNabb was on the ads. Although, I refused to eat their "New England Clam Chowder" or whatever because they beat us in the Super Bowl. I haven't eaten Chunky Soup in years now. Wouldn't want to anyway, Victor Cruz is on the ads.

I can't remember if the WWF had any food items when I was growing up (Attitude Era) aside from those 711 cups. But that was in 2002.
