I really detest the practice of a pedestrian stepping out into a multi-lane road when a car is coming in the middle of the lane, when the pedestrian comes out with the intention of walking, then stopping and waiting on that car, then crossing the rest of the road. I'm all for good efficient jaywalking, but that **** freaks me out when I'm driving because you never have any guarantee that they actually see you and are actually stopping to wait until you've passed...so I end up braking and slowing down until they come to a full stop, then continuing on.
If you're going to jaywalk, just wait until a time when you can safely do all of it. Otherwise, find a damn crosswalk.
Although there are crosswalks going from the subway station to the street I work on, cars aren't required to stop, and only do if you walk across, and literally stop and stare the driver in the eye. A pedestrian and a cyclist both crossing the same sidewalk were hit and killed by trucks a few months ago because the driver didn't stop. They repainted the crosswalk after that, put a memorial bicycle on the side of the fence, but still no mandatory stop. There is only one official, traffic-light-controlled crosswalk from the station to the street I work on, but it's far down, and you have to then cross a highway exit to get to the other side...that doesn't have a crosswalk at all.
