It was a college bar; obnoxiousness quotient varied.

The main thing is always to remember that failed attempts at humor are worth more negative points than most successful attempts at humor are worth in positive points. What they did was not funny, therefore completely unacceptable.

No one would ever achieve great things if they played it safe, even regarding humor. If Louis CK subscribed to that line of thinking, he would've given up a solid 15 years before he hit it big.

My roommate has had vague intentions of doing it for 4 years, and he's at least created his own comedy podcast and done a few levels of improv classes, so I won't hold my breath for you sadly

I did it once. It was a gong show setting. I went on for a full 12-13 minutes before wrapping and never got gonged. I got a lot of big reactions to my punchlines. I had a few random strangers come up to me in the days that followed and say they saw my set, and complimented it. A couple of them bought me drinks to capitalize the point.

For a first time at a difficult art I'd say it went well. It wasn't one-line zingers or the like.

Stylistically it was closest to this:
