It's a fair criticism that I don't really have any argument with, but it doesn't cause me to like the episode less. The Simpsons was just never a show where I had any particular emotional connection to the characters or their circumstances. They were all just clowns put on my TV to amuse me.

I agree with both the sentiment of those who say it was the end, and your examination of the episode. Its #3 on my list (behind Last Exit to Springfield and Who Shot Burns 1 and 2)

My opinion on that episode has a fair bit of support, given that it's the highest-rated Simpsons episode on IMDb. Definitely give it a watch.

Funnily enough my sister just got back from uni and has disney+ so I am probably going to watch them all as my next show. I'm sure I've watched every simpsons episode before (~8 years ago) but I would struggle to pick out episodes I love.

Just finished watching S1E7.

Season 1
1 - Great (Simpsons roasting on an open fire)
2 - Great (Bart the genius)
3 - Good (Homer's odyssey)
4 - ok (There's no disgrace like home)
5 - Great (Bart the general)
6 - Good (Moaning Lisa)
7 - Bad (The call of the simpsons)

I don't think any of them have been all that funny overall so far but mostly very enjoyable TV. I was so impressed by S1E1 it's just such an odd start to a show. Episode 7 is bad story with shitty wacky gags, really bad.

So this is actually super difficult. I know my number 1, but instead of listing my top 5, Im gonna list the top 5 that I think everyone should watch, which encompasses a lot of different kinds of episodes.

1. Last Exit to Springfield - It is and always has been my all time favorite episode. Its incredible. The jokes hit at a 100% clip. The story is surprisingly deep and touching, and its got Burns at his best.

2. Who Shot Mr. Burns 1 and 2 - These count as one episode to me. Its a perfect murder mystery/who shot JR parody.

3. Lisa on Ice - A brilliant look at the kids and their sibling rivalry/connection. And of course, two of the most quotable lines from the shows history are in this episode. Bonus points for a team having the nickname Gougers.
(Alternate option for a sports episode - Homer at the Bat, the single largest collection of guest stars in an episode to that point. Sports humor at its finest.)

4. The PTA Disbands! - Its important to have a school based storyline in here, and this one is the best of the first 6 seasons. - Honk if you love cookies!

5. Lisa's Wedding. - The first (and what should have been only) flash forward episode. Its still warm.

Gonna cheat here and add one more. The Simpsons is synonymous with Halloween television, and Treehouse of Horror V is the cream of the crop.

Looking through the episode list, you really can't go wrong with any season 6 episode (Does not include Another Simpsons Clip Show, but that episode doesn't count anyway.) Not only are there no bad episodes there, but aside from Round Springfield, every episode is at least great with many in the GOAT range.

Thanks for the list. I think I'll watch your number 1 and Homer's Enemy now.

I recall the enormity of the mystery surrounding Who Shot Mr. Burns. It was a hot topic when when school resumed and I started 3rd grade!

Finished season 1 with meaningless ratings.

Spoiler:
Season 1
01 - Great (Simpsons roasting on an open fire)
02 - Great (Bart the genius)
03 - Good (Homer's odyssey)
04 - Ok (There's no disgrace like home)
05 - Great (Bart the general)
06 - Good (Moaning Lisa)
07 - Bad (The call of the simpsons)
08 - Good (The telltale head)
09 - Good (Life on the fast lane)
10 - Good (Homers night out)
11 - Great (Crepes of wrath)
12 - Great (Krusty gets busted)
13 - Great (Some enchanted evening)

I think it's pretty harsh to say that season 1 isn't very good TV.

I can't think of anyone who has said that. If you've never seen The Simpsons before, you'll understand the difference in quality between season 1/2 and 3-8 when you get there. It doesn't mean they are bad seasons, just that they aren't on par with some of the greatest television seasons of all time.

I have seen the simpsons before but I'm going to watch them all and I hope that they are that much better because that is great for me.

I'm just saying that in isolation season 1 is pretty damn good tv. It obviously isn't GOAT or anything like that but it's good. If only S1 of the Simpsons existed I'd suggest it to people as a good cartoon.

I really hate Homer's voice in the earliest seasons.

BH, you sick bastard, you can't just say you're going to watch those episodes "now" 14 hours ago and then come back and post about something else entirely. What did you think?

Oh sorry. My upstairs tv isn't logged in to disney plus (my brother logged in when he was here), so I didn't watch, lol. Will do so at some point tonight.

Lots of iconic moments in this one! I do recall being in hysterics at a couple things when I was a kid. Now, not so much. I don't think I'd have much use for it outside of nostalgia.

In my search for Homer's Enemy, I scroll past S8E10, The Springfield Files, I recall very much enjoying that one.

By the way, I can mathematically prove the funniest joke in Simpsons History:

The direct intersection between Krusty’s illiteracy and debauchery sends the joke to a previously unascended comedic height.

I am correct in thinking that all treehouse of horrors suck right? Just watched the first one and it's not good.

Plenty of good Treehouse of Horrors episodes.

I do remember not liking the first one either though.

First couple are kinda bad. Once they drop the wraparound story (I think in IV) they get infinitely better. To the point that Treehouse IV, V, VI, VII, and most of VIII are some of the best episodes of the series.
