Richard Jenkins is pretty great in it though. I assume Sam Rockwell (deservedly) gets the Oscar for Supporting Actor since he's been cleaning up so far, but Jenkins would be deserving as well.

Spoiler:
Please god tell me no.
The answer is no.

But for the love of god, watch The Room. Its a transcendent experience

That said, if Book 2 didn't grab you, Book 3 is unlikely too as well. Book 3 is great for many different reasons, but for sheer "reach out and grab the reader's attention" moments, book 2 has the most of the 4 early books.

I hope you like The Wastelands, but dont have your hopes set too high.

It's fair to say that my hopes are not at all high, but Dvo and Halpert did enough to make me curious.

I look forward to the day when I say that book 3 wasn't that great and Dvo launches the campaign to get me to read book 4.

He would be right to. Book 4 is fantastic, even outside of the overarching narrative.

If book 3 doesn't convince me to keep going on its own merits, I'll definitely quit.

4 was good, but I was definitely ready to resume following this path of the beam by the time I got to the end.

I enjoyed Lady Bird. Took a bit to grow on me as the movie moved along, but grow on me it did.

For sure, WaG is an interesting beast. I have seen a number of times people call it their least favorite book on first read and their favorite book on subsequent reads.

Its a necessary departure from the beam, and is probably the most important book in terms of the overall narrative, but most people are so anxious on their first go around that they see the book as a wall instead of seeing the immediate tunnel that exists within the story into the heart of the narrative.

Hey LKJ, here’s the T-shirt I’m rocking tonight:

Great points—I need to read the whole series again to see how true this is.

Also re: Stephen King, when I was in 8th grade I got about 1/3 through It and hit a wall. This past summer I tried again and got maybe 150 pages further. I finally picked it back up because I really, really want to see the movie (so does my Constant Reader wife who’s read every single SK book) but not without finishing the book. Here’s hoping I can power through it in the next week or two.

Just because Dvo's reference to his wife being a constant reader reminded me: I got a Kindle Oasis for Christmas. It's great, and it's somewhat better than the Paperwhite, but there's no chance in the world that it beats the Paperwhite for value. It's a lot of extra cost for a marginal upgrade.

Good ol' Saskatoon boy Jay Semko's "Due South" is probably the best fitting theme song for it's respective TV show. Also, Due South was a highly underrated show and deserved more than 4 seasons.

Despite the fact that Daniel Day-Lewis is essentially the perfect actor and put in a great outing as always, Phantom Thread was difficult to enjoy.

Not thrilled with this year's set of award nominees so far.

I am happy to say that I found The Post to be better than I expected. Mind you, when I first saw previews I was excited. But then it was released, and the reviews came back as good-but-not-great.

There are certain types of movies where, if the consensus isn't rave reviews, the movie might not be very good at all. Animated films are in this category. I thought The Post might be also, since it falls squarely into the category where theater-goers go in with an especially aggressive intent to like it (in this case due heavily to the subject matter, though also with a nod to the legend of the leads), and if they come out damning it with faint praise it's a bad sign.

For the foregoing reasons I expected to basically enjoy the film enough to make it worth the time spent, but I came out thinking that it was legitimately great.

Awesome, for the same reasons I have put off seeing The Post despite being excited upon first seeing the previews as well. Ill check it out soon now

Coming home last night, I heard a Lost Prophets song on the radio.

I feel like that's just one of those bands that shouldn't be played ever again for ethical reasons.

I somewhat wish I was made of better stuff with regard to being able to non-hypocritically demand similar of people who committed monstrous acts, but realistically I'll probably keep listening to Michael Jackson until I'm dead.

Michael Jackson is a musical legend, though. It's difficult to just scrub that from history.

Listening to Michael Jackson is like seeking out a Chris Benoit match. Listening to Lost Prophets is like seeking out a Buck Zumhofe match.

I agree, but drawing the distinction on that basis kind of weakens the ethical argument in general.

That's fair, but it only weakens it a little bit imo.

There's only one Michael Jackson; "Last Train Home" is very replaceable.

I would suggest it's a more significant tradeoff than that.

If I was one for boycotts of large corporations on moral grounds (I'm not - I generally think they're masturbatory and pointless even if I can appreciate the romantic idealism), and for instance I boycott Papa Johns but not Chick-fil-A, it's really not much of a "boycott" on moral grounds at all...it's a judgment that the product is borderline at best to begin with, and then there's a marginal moral element where that's the thing that pushes you over the edge. But basically the non-moral quality of the underlying element is leading a person to apply a zero-tolerance policy, and the merit regardless of morals is more of the controlling factor in the decision.

We see this in sports fans on a fairly frequent basis. A Steelers fan sees the poor-tackling third-string linebacker show up on the police blotter for a domestic violence incident and immediately gets self-righteous and demands the linebacker be cut immediately. The same fan sees their star QB get accused of rape and immediately throws up shields and screams about due process and desperately prattles on about "innocent until proven guilty."

When the morality is that easily compromised by how badly the fan/consumer wants to look the other way for reasons unrelated to morality, it's a very minor moral stand at best IMO.
