I mean of course Florida/California/Arizona fanbases are bad as a general rule, not so much because the passionate fans are awful (see: Philadelphia/Boston/Chicago fans) but because those states are full of transplants and you're obviously just going to find a lot less community pride and attachment in those fanbases than you will elsewhere.
The bandwagon thing is really annoying though because of exactly what you said, the non-payment of dues. Hell, I don't just limit that annoyance to adult bandwagoners...I'm jealous as hell of a 10-year-old in Seattle now. Oh, you get to start right off rooting for Russell Wilson? That's nice. I only had to live through five combined years of Stouffer, Kemp, Gelbaugh, McGwire, and Mirer just to get to semi-acceptable stopgap QBs Friesz, Moon, and Kitna. Not that they won anything either.
I've had a really weird sports fan lifespan. When I was 10-13 my favorite football team was one of the best ever, my favorite hockey team (was just getting into hockey) was a year away from the cup, and my favorite baseball team had just signed the biggest star in the game and we're saved from moving by a grocer.
Things were great for a while, then the football team started to fall off. 2002 saw the long suffering baseball team have the biggest disappointment ever at the hands of a monkey and thunder sticks, and 2003 saw the last cup I was going to see for a long while. From 2003-2010, all three of the teams were legit dog****, to the point that I gave up on sports nearly completely in 2008.
Now I'm in the midst of a possible baseball dynasty, one of the top 3 football teams in the game, and a hockey team that nearly won a cup with a 41 year old goalie.
Strange man.
