Re: WOAT Angles/Moments Draft Thread

I described this draft to my wife as "Things that make non-wrestling fans look at wrestling fans like, 'Why the **** do you watch this?'", and then described this next moment to her as she gave me that very look...

WOAT Angles/Moments Draft Thread

So Matt Hardy and Lita were dating in real life.

Than she cheated on him with Edge.

So Vince fires Matt of course lol.

He than rehires him and makes them feud playing off the real life drama

https://youtu.be/cSaW60Py-Vc

https://youtu.be/sz64vQ7MZwE

I take

Matt hardy / lita / Edge love triangle

Team
Hogan walks out of WCW
Shawn Michaels teams with God
Jeff Hardy wrestles Sting while intoxicated
Matt Hardy / Lita / Edge love triangle

Yeah I loved that angle. Some of the best work of their career by all involved.

Yeah that angle was like a good, well-executed version of a bunch of the really bad angles ITT. Shouldn't have been drafted.

It was still in bad taste and made everyone uncomfortable .

It may have ended up with good matches but it wasn't a good idea to start with

Re: WOAT Angles/Moments Draft Thread

The way I see why Matt got fired in 2005 is that he made the affair public when it did not need to be and that is wrong for reasons that I do not know. Besides, I'm sure Vince (once in a blue moon he may do this, I hope it was this time) asked everyone if they were going to be ok doing this storyline and I'm sure both Edge and Matt wanted to take their frustrations and tension in the ring and everywhere else in a WWE-sanctioned event. That can lead to a good storyline, honestly, depending how the events played out.

Also, a comment about that AJ Styles/Claire Lynch storyline. For me, this was probably the lowest point of AJ Styles' career (not in-ring wise, that's impossible, he's always produces great matches, but booking-wise).

Yup you're correct. Actually we're more than 11 hours since last pick, so SRM is skipped and action is on Halpert.

Maybe we should pause the clock for today since it's Easter? A lot of people might not be checking in today.

Yeah, that thought had occurred to me too. I'm fine with that. Clock is paused until 8 a.m. EST tomorrow. People should still go ahead with picks as available.

Re: WOAT Angles/Moments Draft Thread

Our next pick starts off hot. During 1993, WCW fell into a goldmine. In one corner was Big Van Vader - the monster version of him, not the HBK doesn't wanna job to him version. He had been destroying everyone in front of him with his combination of size, strength, and speed. In the other corner was a man who could take immense amounts of punishment, brawl with the best of them, and take many high risk moves: Cactus Jack. The two of them can put on a great match individually and their styles meshed perfectly to make everyone excited to see what would happen.

It turns out the result was a great, brutal match. Foley discusses in his book how he needed a bit of time off for a surgery and wanted to find a way to get written off of tv for a handful of weeks while putting over Vader huge and making the fans interested in seeing a rematch when he returned. So naturally, being the insane person that he is, Foley decides to let Vader powerbomb him on a concrete floor. Legit.

The result is visually impressive (though still bat**** insane and makes me uncomfortable). He gets carried out on a stretcher as everyone applaudes him. The fans are now massively behind him. Vader is massively over as a damn monster. His return and feud with Vader has money printed all over it. It would take a group of idiots to screw this one up. It would take a plethora of terrible decisions in a row to make people not care. It would take ... WCW.

That's another new one on me, and another worthy pick. Man that's awful.

Teejay is still on skip until he makes a pick, so action is on eyebooger.

Re: WOAT Angles/Moments Draft Thread

Not as good a writeup as I want, but I have to go and don't want to hold things up.

I hope this isn't recency bias, but this was the worst thing I saw in wrestling in quite some time. Even if the payoff was amazing, it was completely inexcusable in 2016 to do this. As you might guess from it's placement in this draft, the payoff wasn't amazing. In fact it was non-existent, unless you count endangering the well-being of a high level performer.

I select:
Lesnar vs Orton (Summerslam 2016)

In 2015 and 2016, Brock Lesnar was possibly the most pushed wrestler in WWE history. He broke The Undertaker's Wrestlemania streak, destroyed John Cena at Summerslam the year before, and only lost the title on a surprise MITB cash-in where he didn't even get pinned.

For Summerslam 2016, they announced that Orton would be Lesnar's opponent to a rousing "who cares" from wrestling fans around the world. But Orton came out and gave possibly the best promo of his career on the Highlight Reel at Battleground.

People were actually interested in Orton for the first time in years. Orton attacked Lesnar on Raw; Lesnar attacked Orton on SD. It was very well done.

At Summerslam, for some reason, Lesnar/Orton was given the main event slot, even though the first ever Universal Champion would be decided on that show.

So what happened? For starters, the match sucked. Most of us (especially in this forum) had grown sick of the "suplex city" formula to Lesnar matches. But that's not the reason I'm picking this. I'm picking this for the finish.

The finish was Brock Lesnar, former UFC champion, BLASTING ORTON IN THE HEAD WITH LEGIT MMA ELBOWS.

The match was stopped with Orton lying in a pool of blood. Replays show that he was legitimately unconscious for awhile. For a company supposedly focused on health and wellness, to have someone like Lesnar (who had just come off pissing hot for a UFC event) do that to Orton is completely unacceptable in this day and age.

Orton and Lesnar would never cross paths again. Orton would join the Wyatts for awhile and Lesnar would get beat up by an old man.

I didn't want to do two suspended in the air Undertaker matches back to back, so I didn't take the Mania XV match. And yeah there were two separate matches involving The Undertaker and wrestlers being suspended from the ceiling. I ****ing hate you, Vince McMahon
