Hansen/Jobber vs. MVC's was pretty damn good. I never in my life thought I'd want to see Stan Hansen launch a babyface comeback but when he launches a minute long comeback at 3:55, I wanted mas!!!! Even the ending was such a subtle attempt at a comeback where Dr. Death whips Stan into Gordy but Stan just bowls him over but Dr. Death is there to cut the comeback off. So good. It was also interesting to see Gordy pin his RWTL 88 champion partner to win the match.

The summary for this match is that it basically got lost in the shuffle with all the other great stuff that happened in 1993 AJPW. Seriously, how does this match get lost in the shuffle? 1993 AJPW was completely insane.

I’m just happy I have another Kobashi match to watch. If finding this forum has done anything, it’s introduced me to Kobashi.

Same. I'll be watching that match later tonight too .

dan, I'm jelly that you get to watch 12/3/93 for the first time. It was the first 90's AJPW match that I ever watched and one of the more famous matches. It's so so so good and there's a callback in there to a match that you've already seen but I won't spoil that.

I'm assuming the match you're referring to is the tag league final. My guess is I have actually seen it, a few years back, but don't recall it specifically.

Yeah, that one.

Dan, any idea how that Hansen/jobber vs. MVC match came about? It seems like the oddest match-up ever given that gaijins seemingly only fight each other in title matches and this one made Stan a babyface.

No clue. Yeah it was an alternate reality kind of match. It made me wonder if there was some kind of inside joke going on or locker room dare or something, because in the real world, that Deaton dude gets his ass handed to him, not Hansen of all people.

d/l'ing the entire 1993 observer newsletter catalog to find out why this happened. tr to follow.

edit: from 7/12/93 observer:

Quote:
ECW announced television tapings on 8/7 and 8/8 in Philadelphia with Hawk, Stan Hansen, Paul E. Dangerously, Jimmy Snuka, Don Muraco and they are negotiating with wrestlers from W*ING to appear.
Hansen, Hawk, and Muraco were never seen on ECW tv.

Quote:
1. Stan Hansen pinned Barry Horowitz in about 2:00 with the lariat. Actually while the match was going on it was really good.
lol it was the opener of a June 93 AJPW show.

The tag match. I give it 9 stars. LOL Meltzer. Probably the best match in my chronological tour through the Ditch AJPW archive so far.

Only 9?!?!?! That's total bull****!!! I got this at ************3/4 (12.75).

I have such a hard time picking out a best match from even just 89-93.

Jumbo/Tenryu 6/5/89
Jumbo/Misawa June 90 and September 90
The incredible Misawa vs. Jumbo 6-mans
Kobashi/Kikuchi vs. Can-Ams May 92
Kawada/Hansen Feb 93
That tag match.

At some point you reach a point where it's just like, "OK that's all-time great" and trying to rank them beyond that is pretty much futile (and needless).

Is that tag match the one with Furnas and LaFon that we both watched earlier in this thread? If it is, I loved that match.

I don't remember too much about 94. Obviously 6/3 is what a lot of people consider the GMOAT. Aside from that there's Doc/Kobashi on 9/4, Kawada/Taue vs. Misawa/Kobashi in May. 1995 is littered with greatness.

This is a classic puroresu superstars/young lions tag, and for the first minutes of the video it's just OK. Then at 8:30, Asako gets tagged in and makes the mistake of slapping Kawada multiple times like Kawada's a jobber. It's on like Donkey Kong after that. Little gems like this are why I love the Ditch archive.

I suppose I should watch a few more puro matches at some point. I doubt I've watched more than five in my life.

Try watching some of the faster paced matches. The tag squash above that I posted above with Hansen or the 5/25/92 match w/Can-Ams vs. Kikuchi/Kobashi. Even Kawada/Hansen is a faster pace. Getting into things like Kawada vs. Misawa can be an acquired taste since they're pretty slow paced matches for the most part so I wouldn't start getting to know them in those singles matches. Misawa/Jumbo from 6/9/90 is another faster paced match.

More Hansen vs. Kawada goodness, this one from Champions Carnival 1994. Hansen hits a suicide dive early, and that has to be terrifying to see that big hoss flying at you. Hansen also buries Kawada with an absolutely nasty powerbomb (the first of two).

All you need to know about this match is ...

1. It's Kobashi vs. Hansen (in Champions Carnival 1994).
2. I've only watched 14:07 of the 30-minute video, and paused it to post it before I'm even finished, because I'm pretty sure Hansen is actually trying to kill Kobashi.
EDIT: I just finished it. So so so so so so so so good. These two were magic together.

I never watched that Kawada/Hansen match when I discovered last week. I intend on watching it tonight or tomorrow afternoon. Somehow, I think that Kobashi/Hansen match will be a great desert.

It now occurs to me that I missed mentioning the 93 version of Kobashi/Hansen in my list of GOAT matches a few posts up. The ending of that match is one of my favorite ever. Easily top 10. Hansen just blasting the bajesus out of Kobashi while Kobashi sat on the top rope was amazing.

Just watched, and unfortunately the Hansen/Deaton vs. Williams/Gordy match didn't really hook me.

I think you have to be familiar with a lot of previous AJPW history with both Hansen and the Can-Ams to find that tag match interesting.

Misawa/Jumbo 6/9/90 is a good pick. All you need to know is Jumbo is the veteran top dog and Misawa is the fresh young talented upstart trying to upend him.
