Man, I had a whole write-up written up and I'm going to pull back and not pick that match. I'll talk about it and why when it gets picked. In the meantime I'm actually going to decide on a lesser match to pick, which feels weird, but there it is. I'll try to make up my mind and post something soon.

Wow I really am planning on taking two facemelters, but if somehow these two matches fall to me there's no way I can pass them up.

One of them you're talking about is the one that I just came within a click of posting as my pick, and I'm pulling back on it. Strangely enough, it's your influence causing me to go in another direction. I've made up my mind now; pick incoming.

Can i get a rule clarification? Is the ROH Pure title a "world title" or a midcard title?

It should be a world title imo just like the TNA title.

Is it really a world title though? Surely its closest comparison is the X Division title?

It wasnt considered lower than the ROH title, however the X Division title was considered equal to the NWA (later the TNA after the split) World Title.

Edit, another example is how ECW considered its TV title under RVD to be equal to its world title, but yet we consider the TV title to not be a world title.

With the 13th pick in the draft, I select...

v.

Spoiler:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUDYw_cnFoE

One of the greatest title matches of all time, Flair v. Steamboat is an absolute master class in technical wrestling and one that has stood the test of time as one of the greatest title matches in the history of the industry. Steamboat winning the title, and the ensuing emotional celebration following, is an amazing moment. While I would have preferred to be able to take the WrestleWar affair, this one will do just fine, and has significantly more value in this draft format than the other undrafted one that those two matches would bring to mind.

LKJFest I:
NWA Title: Ric Flair (c) v. Ricky Steamboat (Chi-town Rumble, 23:18)

Nice choice was on my short list

edit: Steamboat vs Flair was. I havent researched enough to decide which one I wanted to take

Flair-Steamboat is obviously an excellent wrestling match and a fine addition to any card. There's a reason I wouldn't necessarily have taken it here though.

There were drawbacks to every pick. I was raring back to pick a much more modern match here, and the modernness is why I didn't. If possible, I want a supercard that only spans like a 10 year range in order to keep it believable, and that wasn't the timespan I wanted to work from. Especially now that I've picked based on that notion, I'll be arguing harder than ever that believability of a card is hugely important in assessing just how great it is, and is superior to just having a hodgepodge of awesomeness that spans 25+ years.

I might only get 4 or 5 matches on my card. Still waiting for Chargers to link me to my super awesome pick so I can see how long it is

While I have some sympathy with that (mostly in the sense that crowd reactions for older matches might not be the same today as they were then, because (HHH voice) wrestling is simply a different business (/HHH voice), suffice to say I largely disagree with it being necessary to building a cohesive card (though it helps, a little).

Well, I assume that you're not expanding on why you wouldn't pick this because it would require you to mention undrafteds, but I'd be interested in your line of reasoning once the undrafteds go off the board.

Admittedly there is one very real problem that I've created for myself with this pick, but I'll discuss that later in the draft when I can talk more freely.

My first round selection is:

Spoiler:
Magnum TA vs. Tully Blanchard - NWA US Title "I Quit" Match - 1985 Starrcade - Match Time: 14:43

This may be a reach in this spot; I'm not really sure, but part of me thinks I may be lucky to get it in this spot. I don't know how many "extreme rules" matches there have been since this one, but none of them have captured the story better in my opinion. There is no wrestling in this match, there are no "OMG!" spots, and there is no pandering to the crowd; it is simply two men who hate each other and will do anything to harm, hurt, and humiliate the other one. And that story is told beautifully within the steel cage.

My card:

Magnum TA vs. Tully Blanchard - NWA US Title "I Quit Match" (14:43)

Total Match Time: 14:43

Awesome pick, I was pretty confident that I would be able to get that as my third rounder.

I'm gonna hold off on my facemelter. I never thought in a million years that both these matches would be left with me getting the last pick. I just can't pass on them. My facemelter will still be there in the third round.

To be perfectly clear before it gets back to me as im choosing matches as this will direct the rest of my card. If ROH Pure is a world title (which i still dont agree with, but so be it), is the TNA X Div considered a midcard belt?
WBM All-time Match Draft Quote
02-15-2012 , 03:10 PM
ROH Pure shouldn't be a World Title imo. I have no plans on drafting a ROH Pure Title match fwiw so I'm not saying it for my own benefit.
WBM All-time Match Draft Quote

I'm so ignorant about ROH that I'd be happy to hear other opinions about my ruling on that. I also am ignorant about TNA, so ditto on the previous sentence for the following: yes, the x-division is a midcard belt.

I also dont think the Pure title should be considered a world title. A world title should be a company's (or brand's, currently) #1 belt, the Pure title was never that.

Can you answer this please LKJ.

Also, are future matches available to draft? So for example would someone on Monday be able to draft a match from this years EC?

Apologies if either of these were already addressed, couldn't find anything.

Spoiler:

Like I said earlier, I was planning on drafting a couple facemelters but I simly couldn't pass on my favorite match of all time. Undertaker and HBK are well past the prime of their careers but they don't let that stop them from putting on the greatest match of both of their hall of fame careers. There's so many epic spots that it seems silly to name a few because I'll leave off so many but I'll do it anyway. Undertaker's suicide dive which led to the greatest false finish of all time, Taker catching HBK skinning the cat into a tombstone, and of corse Taker catching HBK's moonsault into a tombstone. This match has everything a great match should. Two of the all time greats, awesome ring work, a red hot crowd, and to top it off it's on the grandest stage of them all Wrestlemania.

Spoiler:

Again this is another match that has everything you could ask for as a wrestling fan. Two of the most over wrestlers of all time going at it, amazing commentary by JR and Heyman, a red hot crowd at Wrestlemania, and a heel turn that no one saw coming. This is the match that is widely consider the last match of the attitude era. Austin and Rock pull out all the stops and have probably the greatest main event in Wrestlemania history.
