Again, I'll share my surprise about the BatB. Anecdotally, I remember that being so fkn anticipated, and then delivering in about the best possible way. I, like LKJ, was so pumped for that show personally.

Yeah, I mean I fully admit I would have made the same mistake in assuming big drawing power for that one.

Judy, get your ass in here and pick.

BatB 1996 looks great in retrospect, but it is true that WCW was dying at this time period. There was a slight uptick at the initial arrival of Hall and Nash, but the story didn't go anywhere for weeks, WCW's attacks on WWF became more and more desperate, and once it became clear to the casual fan that Hall and Nash were, in fact, not still employed by WWF it lost some of its cache with them.

As far as the draw of the mystery third person, most people thought it would be Sting (and I've heard that it was going to be Sting up until a day or two before when they changed their mind and talked Hogan into doing it). There were also rumors of it being Luger, and some young WWF guys.

Hogan had been built up so much in WCW that he was virtually unbeatable, and so this looked like it was just another predictable WCW set-up where they turn Sting and then have Hogan clean up the mess defending WCW from the invaders. The Hogan turn really changed everything and everyone's opinion of WCW's creative team (for a little while anyway), and really got everyone on board from casual fans to the smarks.

WCW's greatest success being best analogised to falling ass backwards out of a boat is pretty much perfect, lol.

Man, if the whole Hogan thing was really thrown together in the last day or two, that was pretty genius (or luckbox). I mean, his speech was so epic, and actually made perfect sense. Looking back, it seems like it would have been such a flop if it was "just" Sting, or especially Luger.

Sting also would have made zero sense, given that he was in no way an outsider to WCW. Hogan worked because he still had a strong WWF association.

The really strong rumour at the time was that they were trying to bring in Bret Hart, as his contract had expired and he was off TV following WrestleMania XII. I couldn't ever see that working, certainly not with Hogan on the WCW side.

It would've worked in the sense that the WWF would've been ****ed.

Pick 41:

vs.

Spoiler:

Mr. Perfect vs. The Blue Blazer, WrestleMania V

Time to get some good wrestling on this card, and frankly, it doesn't get much better than these two. They packed so much good stuff into just 5:49, in one of the most underrated classics ever at a WrestleMania.

Our card:

Spoiler:
Honky Tonk Man vs. Ultimate Warrior (Summerslam 88)
Royal Rumble 1992

[x] Bonus points granted for building a realistic time period card
[x] Bonus points granted for drafting a match this high in the all-time match draft card that makes my drafting of it look even better in the WrestleMania draft thread
[x] Bonus points granted for taking a Mr. Perfect match since obviously that can't affect my draft board at all
[x] Bonus points granted for bailing me out of my weird but real fear that you were going to snipe my pick, even though I doubt my pick is even on anyone else's radar

Well now nobody's even going to know what put that "bonus points" bull**** in my head.

Off to lunch; hopefully I'll be on the clock when I come back.

We can only assume from the evidence of this post that lunch is spiders-in-a-blender stew.

Pick 42 (apparently):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyggY_R3jU8

vs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDd16QVdBAA

I wanted to do this match later in the draft as i think its off the radar of a lot of people. Then that numpty Chargers posted it in the best matches video thread a couple days ago and i was sweating bullets hoping i could get it

At least i get to steal the youtube link:

Spoiler:

Spoiler:
I think you could basically find all ROH matches, filter by Daniel Bryan Bryan Danielson and get at least 4*s worth every single time. This probably isnt the best match the Dragon ever did, im not 100% sure its the best Dragon match ive seen as a few were uber close that i saw researching this pick, but what we have here is Bryan taking on Nigel McGuinness, one of the biggest British breakout stars of the industry in Liverpool in front of a hot crowd with Bryan going full heel.

The background to this is this is a title vs title match under Pure rules where there must be a winner as titles change via DQ and countout. However under Pure rules you only get 3 rope breaks which as you can imagine is part of the story you will see. They tried to unify the titles before but Nigel won via countout, however the World title couldnt change hands that way and thus we got a Dusty finish leading to this

Dont click if you wanna be completely unspoilered on this match (seriously watch this at some point if you havent already):
Spoiler:
The high points are just so big. You will see a lot of technical wrestling as they tell a story about rope breaks with Bryan the submission artist and Nigel who is ridiculously tall and thus able to reach the ropes easily. True story his first ROH gimmick was literally that he was so tall he could rope break out of any submission, then Gabe realised just how ****ing great he was so he got more opportunity rather than just a goofy one trick pony gimmick.

The match gets brutal including a spot where Nigel "aided" by Bryan shoot rams his head into the ringpost to bust himself open hardway (there is literally no way that was a blade). There is a spot where Bryan chokes Nigel with a table to then try and get a countout win. There is a suicide dive into the crowd, they burn off the rope breaks and we go into a great go home starting with them shoot headbutting each other getting Nigel's blood all over Bryan and then Bryan locks Nigel in Cattle Mutilation as the crowd screams "please dont tap", he counters out of it then gets locked into a crucifix and gets beaten to unconsciousness with repeated elbow strikes to the head thus making Bryan ROH's definitively and indisputably most dominant singles wrestler.

To close as the crowd shouts bull**** and throws trash rubbish at Bryan as he poses with his belts then offers to kill anyone in the crowd who wanted to come into the ring and fight him. Then Nigel struggles to his feet to huge cheers Bryan then gets a live mic, cuts on the crowd but then puts Nigel over huge and promises him a rematch.

If you dont love the entire spectacle you have a cold dead heart and no head for wrestling. Please remove yourself from the draft right now

My card so far:
Spoiler:
Bret v. Owen - WM X (20:21)
X-Div. Title: Daniels v. Styles v. Joe Unbreakable '05 (22:50)
ROH World Champ Bryan Danielson vs ROH Pure Champ Nigel McGuinness Unified (25:22)

WOW!!! That was such a friken great match. The structure of it was so immense. And you say this is not Danielson's best match. Wow. Great pick man, in terms of workrate. Your card is really chockful of really really great wrestling.

I'm going to be throwing up some more great Danielson matches in the "greatest matches" thread soon. I think Unified is probably his second best match in ROH. He's had some awesome ones in DragonGate to that I plan on posting at some point.
