One pole? Hah! Everyone knows they are in one of four shoddily constructed wooden boxes each attached to a pole in a corner of the ring.

If you looked at someone else's ratings, you'd have to account for the fact that he's a huge Roman Reigns mark and gives his matches half a star more than they normally would be. Plus, you couldn't compare his ratings with the ratings of Flair's 1989 run or Misawa's 90s run, because he's been rating matches for only 2 years.

OTOH, Metlzer's been rating matches for the past 30 years, so you can compare ratings across a long period of time, with known biases (e.g., he rates Tokyo Dome matches and Undertaker matches a little too high).

In addition, because of Meltzer, we have a standard on what a 5 star match actually is. Consciously or not, when people say, "that's a 4.75 star match", they are doing so in comparison to other 4.75 star matches.

Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles - TLC 2016:

I downloaded and watched this match unspoiled based on the live reactions from the TLC thread. It looked like it was unfolding as a great main event.

The match was very good. I loved the heat the guys showed which was something I had complained about in a recent match from the NXT Toronto event. It had some really great moments. AJ sacrificing for that industry to get pops:

I thought that when Dean set the ladder on the table that AJ would get a reverse on that situation and do the 450 from there. Boy was I wrong and what followed was a great looking spot where Dean didn't just put his elbow on AJ's stomach, it looked as if he was trying to drive it through AJ's stomach.

Some more battling and then in a spot I'll probably never forget because of my thoughts prior to it happening. AJ puts Dean on a table. AJ goes to the turnbuckle, AJ goes past the turnbuckle into the ring, and here I'm saying to myself "he's going to do the 450! there's no way he's going to do it!". Boom! Hits the 450 perfectly on Dean while nearly breaking himself in half. What a ****ing spot!

Then it gets weird. JBL insists the crowd is chanting "This is awesome" when they're chanting "AJ Styles" because, you know, heels. AJ gets back in the ring and the match takes a turn for the worse. AJ ascends the ladder and then descends it when James comes down the aisle. AJ goes outside and in a great show of a ruthless character, AJ doesn't jaw jack with James like every other wrestler would do, he just kicks him in the gut and punches him in the neck. Superb work from AJ there. Dean saves James. James costs Dean the championship. Awful ending and here's why:

I've read James's reasoning for interfering, however, it makes no sense. He'd have gotten the match with AJ if AJ would've won. AJ would've won if James never came out. This was Russoesque swerving for the sake of swerving. It was total garbage. There are much better ways to turn him heel with the same motivation...like just costing Ambrose the match as Ambrose climbs the ladder before the overbooking? Just a thought. This instantaneously made me think of Heyman turning on Punk when Axel came out and it was just overbooking until Heyman turned which defied any kind of logic. This heel turn defied any logic and ruined a great match.

It's like they want to give AJ this visual clean win without giving it to him because they don't want Dean beaten clean which is all kinds of ridiculous because it's clear AJ is the man, AJ beat Cena clean, and it's a ladder match ffs. Dean isn't on this level where he needs to be protected like some superhero like SuperCena of 05-13, Austin, Hogan, Rock, etc..

My rating: ***3/4. It was an insanely fun match but I just can't call this match great when it has such an illogical finish.

Check wrestlingforum's MotY thread and the Meltzer RR ratings thread and you'll see it's the same. That's the only other place I read so idk about others.

I'm not really that surprised. Other forums seems to have a lot of wrong views, especially Reddit.

This forum seems to be a few months ahead of Reddit in its thinking. While obviously not everyone here has the same view, it seems that, for example, we were talking about Ambrose not being a very good worker months before Reddit realized that. We talked about how Roman is underrated as a worker months before Reddit also. And at least some of us really think that Balor is overrated, while Reddit still loves him.

We also warmed up to jericho before his heel turn (i remember a conversation we had about how jericho is like an out of touch trying to be cool dad and how it was really working for me)

Also that charlotte > everyone else including sasha

however, i maintain that on this one, you're being too hard on it cause you knew cena was winning But I get it. I've seen people say punk/rock was really good and i couldnt give a **** about it because the ending was so obvious the whole time

I've literally never seen anyone on this forum or others say that either Punk/Rock match was even decent.

I'm sure everyone here also knows this: Cena winning was much more of a sure thing than Roman. Not even because of the No-DQ stip that was added late, though you surely could deduce doubt of Roman winning from that. But because Cena had already lost clean to AJ at SS. There's nobody to interfere for AJ (maybe Nash) and Cena isn't losing clean twice or losing three straight matches vs AJ. As LKJ said in this or another thread, the finish was awful because it was just that added move and added intensity that signaled the end of the match. OMG!!! He flipped over and picked AJ up!!! lame garbage

Moorobot once said this, at least by inference.

But yeah, that match sucked. The highlight was the botch where the table fell apart prematurely.

Punk/Rock still remains probably the most horrible and disappointing thing I've ever seen. It wasn't just an awful wrestling match, it transcended that. It was quite possibly the worst performance ever put on across all movies, tv shows, sporting events, music, and plays. It started comedically terrible, dragged in to boredom, ended badly, and then somehow still dug it's way to another level and re-ended horrifically. It's the closest I've come to permanently stopping watching the WWE, and I still feel slightly depressed even thinking about it now all these years later.

My random and arrogant take on Cena/Styles... It feels like the sort of match that you are 'supposed' to like, rather than the kind of match you actually like. 2+2 generally has more 'free thinkers' who don't particularly give a **** what they are supposed to like, and just comment honestly on their own feelings, which creates more honesty here.

It could be the fact that this forum has a greater diversity of opinions here. For example even on Orton winning this forum seems somewhat split. If we disagree at worst we make fun of each other. Somewhere like reddit I'm guessing saying something outside groupthink gets 'downvoted' or hated on a lot more.

Your Wyatt/Orton rating is a half-star too high IMO.

Otherwise no real objections, I was having network difficulty during the ladder match so I don't have a great feel for how good it was.
