Re: Rasslin Podcasts

Their Montreal Screwjob stuff (starting with the "Wrestling With Shadows" episode) was pretty great and would eat up quite a few hours. Their other journeys (WrestleMania, Starrcade, AWA, WCCW) would be other options. The Benoit three-parter was compelling also.

My answer is that like most podcasts, your enjoyment of the show is going to depend substantially on the topic.

Just pick episodes that are about shows/events/years you're interested it. Don't overthink it.

Angry Re: Rasslin Podcasts

Listening to the Observer Retro show and found this fascinating: a billed match at the ppv that never happened because WCW closed up shop was Ric Flair and Jeff Jarrett vs. Dusty and Dustin Rhodes. What a ****ing spectacle that would've been. edit: so much blonde hair for juicing.

Also, TLF's really sucking lately. I stopped my contribution on patreon this month

Re: Rasslin Podcasts

Found TLF pod thanks to this forum. As a kid who was obsessed with wrestling in the 90's I should be their target demographic. When I first saw the length of the episodes, I assumed I was supposed to queue up the PPV and watch it in real-time with them ala Mystery Science Theather 300. I mean, why else would these be 3+ hours long?

Nope.

It's just super long rambling with 20-minute tangents that many go nowhere. I found many of their jokes in poor taste as well. I half love it, half hate it.

Re: Rasslin Podcasts

I think that's a fair rating of TLF. I listen to it when I go to sleep some for that reason- the trail off and I fall asleep.

It's not the most listener friendly or enjoyable podcast of its type out there, and I'm not a huge fan (although I've listened to plenty of episodes).

I newer one I've been enjoying is "Greetings From Allentown". It's one guy from Massachusetts reviewing one old show per week. There's no theme or order and he jumps from promotion to promotion and year to year, so that's kind of a nice change.

He also adds sports stories from the time and other pop culture stuff. I find it pretty enjoyable and an easy listen.

This IYH '95 episode marks the first time I broke into a laughter fit over the Lapsed Jukebox. The emailer asking JP to do the original Henry Godwinn theme was a stroke of genius.

Trial of His Life was garbage (I haven't completed it yet, but I'm close, I'm slowly making the slog whenever I run out of other podcast content), but I do think this Season's Beatings episode has been a lot of fun.

Re: Rasslin Podcasts

I thought Season's Beatings was alright. I always enjoy JP reading from Diana's book . I did love the Royal Rumble 1990 episode.

I still haven't finished the latest pod and I'm usually done with new ones by the end of the day they come out .

Re: Rasslin Podcasts

This fictional Lapsed Newspaper Editor character that has come about is really one of their top characters. I can't even fully justify this opinion because he peddles the exact same act every time, but it absolutely slays me and I haven't gotten tired of it yet.

Re: Rasslin Podcasts

While TLF is generally good about sticking to their "no sacred cows" mantra, I'm pretty sure that Meltzer is someone they treat as a sacred cow due to his help early on in the cast.

I'm not even really faulting it; I understand that they should be personally grateful to him, and I personally know the feeling of pulling a punch that a person might deserve because that person was once decent to you. But, especially given how constitutionally opposed they are that "more athletic/flippy = better," I'm just about certain they would have started ripping on Meltzer by now if not for their past relationship.

New OSW Review up on their website, will be on YouTube in a week or so most likely but if you don't want to wait it's here: http://oswreview.com/media/oswreview89/

This episode is King of the Ring 1994 with the infamous commentary of Art Donovan. If you've never seen it before it's worth a watch on its own or through the OSW treatment.

Part Two of SuperBrawl IV has what I think is my favorite line from Jack. Will throw in spoilers if anyone wants to listen first. Bit starts at around 1:53:00 and ends around 1:56:00:

TLF - 2:08 of Pt. 1 of the Collision in Korea is tremendous. I never tire of examples of the absurd obsession with "you know this is fake, right?"

Re: Rasslin Podcasts

I actually listened to 2m8s because I didn't realize you meant 2h8m . Those are easily my favorite parts of the show nowadays.

In related news, I listened to JR's podcast exactly one time and didn't finish. Some midcarder (think Bob Holly) was having an issue jobbing and JR said "come on, it's fake. why are you bitching about losing.". Meanwhile his buddy SCSA refused to work with people, refused finishes, and walked out over having to lose.

Also, the lapsed jukebox stuff is way more irritating to me than jp's mixing people to equal person.

Re: Rasslin Podcasts

Yeah, admittedly I gave a second's thought to saying 2:08:00, which I probably should have.

That's such an annoying line for JR to peddle, because it does make some logical sense, but it's well-established that it really does cost a person money and career opportunities to lose. People take that line when it serves their purposes. JR was a corporate stooge for so long that of course he tried to shut down dissent with it countless times, and I'm sure on some level started to believe in it because he wasn't the one who was cost money. Obviously wrestlers need to be reasonable about when they kick up a fuss about a job, but there is a time and a place for it.

The "is that the love child of..." jokes are never funny, but they've never been among my pet peeves with the show because it's a dumb moment that only lasts for 10-15 seconds. Usually when the TLF guys get annoying, it's something that will carry on for several minutes (often really loud minutes).

I emailed them recently to plead with them to finally give us Havoc '95. After hearing that Heroes of Wrestling was done because a listener put it on their radar, I wanted to make sure that they weren't somehow unaware or forgetful of this glorious show where The Giant falls off the roof of a building and then returns to wrestle 45 minutes later without explanation.

Pretty easy, given the pause button and all. 30-45 minute chunks, 2-3 chunks a day while doing other various life activities. Adds up quickly enough.

Re: Rasslin Podcasts

I guess my thinking is that if you're listening to one podcast you likely listen to many more. I would think that's the majority at least. So for me, with all the podcasts I listen to that come out weekly, if I had to dive in to a 6 hour one I would either never finish it or never get to anything else before the new stuff comes out.

The Jim Cornette Experience this week will be a must-listen (if it is not already recorded).

Details?

I don't subscribe to his podcast, but he shows up in my YT recs a ton so I hear a fair number of his thoughts. What's the deal with this week?

This week's JCE is already recorded as per Brian Last's Twitter.

The story has broken over Twitter in the last hour. Apparently some OVW talent have come forward indicating Cornette would only push them if they had sex with his wife Stacey (while Cornette watched). DMs were published.

Stephen P New and the New Law Offices are already involved.

Huh. Looks like it's connected to an overall movement of people using #speakingout on Twitter, mostly female stars speaking up about dudes leveraging their power over them. Obviously color me very unsurprised that there are a bunch of horrible shady dudes exploiting the tiniest bit of leverage in this industry.

Yeah - saw Jake Hager mentioned tonight, as well as Jimmy Havoc and Joey Ryan.

Ryan being scum does not surprise me in the least.
