Agreed, deathmatches are complete garbage. I'll be honest and say I wasn't even a fan of the original ECW. I've always hated hardcore matches and even guys like Mick Foley I was never a fan of. Even nothing but complete spotfests with guys like Jack Evans and Teddy Hart don't do it for me.

I really enjoy the hybrid MMA/prowrestling style that guys like Davey Richards and Bryan Danielson do in the ring. I'm very much like Bret Hart when he talks about pro wrestling. He sees wrestling as art and puts a lot of pride into his matches. There's a lot of 'realism' in his matches. Big fan of guys like Benoit/Angle/Bret Hart etc.

I totally agree with you here. It actually shocked me that the ROH match post earlier wasn't a massive spotfest, as it seems like that is the trend that lightweight matches have fallen into. If more ROH matches are like that one, then I might actually have some current wrestling to check out every once in awhile.

I'm really glad some of you are open to check out other stuff out there besides WWE. There's really good stuff out there that you'll love if you give it a try. I was very much this way once when I only watched WWE before branching out to some other stuff.

Here's a match that was voted best Indy match of 2009 by 411mania.com . I have to agree, I really really loved this match. Here's a chance to see Bryan Danielson when he's really great before he debuts in WWE and gets watered down. From the recent Dragon Gate USA Untouchables PPV.

Maybe the best garbage match of the year but no garbage match can be match of the year imo.

Was thinking of asking this in the thread so this is as good a time as any. What is everyones match of the year?

My own fave right now is the triple thread Joe/AJ/Daniels match from Turning Point, but im a big TNA mark right now and have seen little in the way of ROH PPVs and stuff from Japan and Mexico. The Undertaker/HBK match was damn good and the best WWE match by a HUGE margin but not quite the best.

I think Naruki Doi vs Shingo from Enter the Dragon would edge it if i had any grounding to the history of their DGUSA match and im sure there is a tonne of great stuff out there im missing. A lot of my love of the TP match probably comes from the company finally doing the match the fans have wanted for the title the three of them deserve to be feuding for.

Dr. Death Steve Williams passed away today, after having cancer.

Three things I remember about him

*The terrible Brawl for All tourney he got legit hurt in
*Him going to WCW and for some reason stomping a bunch of cruiser-weights after they had a match
*Lance Storm saying he had the best looking punch in wrestling, where people in the back thought Dr Death legit KOed him during a match.

Best Matches of the year:

TNA: Motor City Machine Guns vs Naruki Doi and Masato Yoshino

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5t...sato-yos_sport

I'm not sure if this was from this year (or last year) but this was the first time Doi and Yoshino showed up on TNA during the X-Cup. Just an all around fantastic match, I love Doi and Yoshino. They've had some awesome matches in dragon gate in japan so when they showed up to face the murder city machine guns, you know this will be all kinds of awesome. Only downer on this was that it took place on TV in TNA so you know these guys won't get more than 10 mins max which is a travesty.

ROH: Bryan Danielson vs Davey Richards (Final Countdown Tour Boston)

Simply awesome and Bryan's farewell speech to the fans of Roh was pretty emotional with fans chanting "please don't go" and "WWE sucks"

Dragon Gate USA: Bryan Danielson vs Naruki Doi

Just an absolute fantastic match (posted link earlier). Made me tear up to see Bryan Danielson's last televised indy match on PPV. Honourable mention to Davey Richards vs Shingo also on the same PPV. By far the best PPV of the year.

Davey Richards vs Shingo

Part 3

WWE: either Jericho vs Rey Mysterio or HBK vs UT

Both equally as good.

Sad day. I never got a chance to see too much of his work in japan.

That was a great story.

The Greatest Punch

Quote:
I was first introduced to Dr. Death’s amazing punch before the match even started and I’ve never forgotten it. We were in the locker room going over the match and what we might do and while talking through it Steve got to a point where he said he might throw a punch during this one spot and while he said it, he threw the punch. I wasn’t expecting him to physically throw the punch and it came at me so hard and so fast and made such a loud crack when it hit that it scared the hell out of me. What amazed me even more than the speed and crispness of this punch was that it landed on my jaw with about the same impact as my daughter flicking me with her finger. I was frozen in my tracks dumb founded at what was without a doubt the greatest worked punch I’ve ever witnessed.
Dr. Death ended Misawa's 2 year reign as AJPW Triple Crown champ. He also was part of a tag team with Terry Gordy called the Miracle Violence Connection.

Wow, Dr Death managed to go an entire decade without being pinned on US soil. Thats sick.

He seems to have tried MMA out at some point too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4T6layh2CU&feature=fvw

Stick to pro wrestling imo, lol.

Edit, here is a match against Kenta Kobashi:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AsjhRd9JHU

There is a match that happened a few days earlier between these two that got rated 5 stars, if anyone can find a copy id be most thankful. There is a chance this is the same match though, i dunno. Seems weird to have a 5 star match on the 31st Aug then another big one on the 4th Sept where both were broadcast.

How can a Bryan Danielson and Davey Richards match be bad? By my posts on best matches and links it's obvious I'm biased to these guys

Mega LOL at this:

Quote:
It would appear that Batista is not particularly high on WWE's "champions of tomorrow" as he feels that other wrestlers of his generation are a dying breed.

"We're dinosaurs in this age of instant gratification. We are not just athletes, we are also storytellers and I don't see that in the newcomers," Batista said in an interview with the Manila Standard Today.

He'll probably look a little better with makeup and what not. If he stays through WM, I see a decent shot of him putting the Sharpshooter on Vince.
