Surprising, but okay. Obviously as someone in the camp of defending Razor-Shawn as a match that is still great today, I'm a big fan of that one also. In the words of Antidan in our first OOT wrestling draft, "But still."

At that time, everyone went ape**** over the Shawn/Razor ladder match. It really was more talked about back then. It just hasn't stood up long-term as well because of TLC, Money in the Bank etc. craziness. Bret/Owen will be great in 2115.

Poor Rey and Eddie. No shot at all.

9. Austin/Hart WM 13

Strangely, I actually was not a super-huge fan of the WM 2000 C&E/Dudleys/Hardys epic. Don't get me wrong, it's still very very good. I think for me, I just thought the way wrong team won at the time. Frankly, I don't think either of these matches really belongs in the tournament. But if I have to pick one ... swerve! It's still the triple tag, because while HBK/Mankind is really good, it's not THAT good. I just kind of wish TLC II was the only one of these matches in the tourney and this one had gotten left out. Oh well.

Christian & Edge vs Dudleys vs Hardys, WM 2000

I'm abstaining from voting on the third match listed above. I might be the world's biggest (and possibly most unfair) skeptic of the HHH/Austin vs. Jericho/Benoit match (even if HHH is a boss here), and I haven't seen the other one (I just felt like I needed to write something else in parenthesis here to really piss people off).

Punk/Cena against what I would argue is the best triple threat match ever is brutal for me. I absolutely freaking love that triple threat ... but Punk/Cena is epic in just about every way imaginable and is probably the best WWE match of this decade. I don't think that's recency bias, either.

Looking even further at this, the Bret/Owen Mania 10 match didn't even finish in the top 20 for match of the year voting that year. It is curious that it so well regarded today when it was considered great but nothing legendary at the time.

I'm completely baffled by the notion that it wasn't considered an instant classic at the time, but 1994 is before I was plugged into any sort of internet chatter.

It's probably Meltzer's fault for incorrectly giving it only ****1/2 and then somehow rating the Bret/Owen SummerSlam cage match higher.

The Bret/Owen cage match was slightly higher in the voting but not close to cracking the top 10. Meltzer in his write up for Owen/Bret Mania 10 said that it appeared to be a strong match of the year candidate when it was over, so he was actually a lot higher on it than the readers.

My first take is that people who read the Observer then generally watched Japanese and Mexican wrestling, not just WWF or WWF and WCW, and they had a lot of workers closer in caliber to Owen and Bret such as Kobashi, Kawada, Benoit, Art Barr, etc. so seeing a match like that wasn't really out of the ordinary. If someone just watched WWF, they probably hadn't seen many matches like that match outside of Steamboat vs Savage. Bret vs Owen did finish second in feud of the year voting, so I don't think people had anything against Bret or Owen.

im super, super high on that rollins triple threat match, but damn i love that raw match. i cant think of the last time a raw match has felt that BIG before. crowd is amazing during it.

Can't recall the Michaels/Mankind but I have to imagine I'm more likely to vote for that than the WM 2000 3 team match match. I just can't completely get over how it is one team doing moves that damage themselves and another team over and over, thereby benefiting the third team that isn't involved in the damage inducing spot over and over.

Because from where I sit, it's incredible . I'd put it in top 15 matches of WWE and possibly top 10.

Kobashi/Misawa

Hart/Hart is one of the last matches I watched in an attempt to finish WM 10 for the review thread. Seeing it up against this match is a nightmare for me, as it's probably - though I don't know for sure - the only match I'd pick over Owen/Bret.

Savage/Warrior

This to me is picking a better match over one of the hottest crowds in wrestling history. I love a good crowd, and the Stampede is one of the GOATs, but on wrestling alone, and also a decent crowd, I take Savage/Warrior

Vader/Sting
The Wargames match is great, but like a few others have said in the other thread, it's pretty hard to grade. It's a very fun watching experience, but I never know how to rate it. Vader/Sting takes it for me on basically that reason, though of course it holds up on it's own.

Rock/Austin

Not my favorite match of all time, but I have to give it the nod for many of the same reasons I gave Vader/Sting the nod over the War Games match. I think my 13 year old self would have voted for the TLC match, for what that's worth.
