Surprised they don’t make the WM match a triple threat 2 falls match or something. Cody wins fall 1 to take the universal title, Sami takes fall 1 to win the WWE title, everyone wins

I didn't watch last night, but it sounds like they basically used the night to clear Sami out of the way in hopes that the crowd would accept that he was gone by WM. I don't have a feel for whether they succeeded since I wasn't watching. If they can actually manage to thread that needle then it will show the difference between Bootista 2014 and Cody 2023 (with a side of the gap between Bryan 2014 and Sami 2023).

It probably also helps their cause that Sami is a less credible threat than Bryan. Nobody expects Sami to win, though they still hope. Bryan was expected to win. I can't even remember the last time Sami won a match.

Comparing Cody to bootista is pretty unfair. Batista was shoehorned into the WM ME out of retirement to promote what was (at the time) an unknown bullshit movie over someone that was clearly worthy

Cody at least paid his dues pretty spectacularly

I don't disagree. The comparison is about the dynamics, not the merit. I don't have any ill feelings toward Cody about the whole thing, even though the situation has devolved into them booking suboptimally because dammit that's how they planned it.

The more I think about it, the more disappointed I am in the finish last night.

You have a super-hot crowd, you can't just do nothing with that.

The reasonable choices were:
1) Have Sami win.
2) Do the Jey turn, Roman wins, beatdown ensues, KO makes the save, big hug to end it.

All they did was plant the seeds of #2 without fully committing. Use that stuff for Raw and Smackdown, not a crowd that's near the level of CM Punk in Chicago.

This is my problem with huge streaks that feel like they need some insane payoff to end. Even if Sami won the only response is him losing again straight away as they don't want him running through the top of the roster as he isn't that guy.

I really don't care about the Cody stuff and if he wins at WM I can't see the booking paying off for long.

How often has there really been a good payoff at the end of a streak?

Tatanka losing to Ludvig Borga on TV, Goldberg getting tazed and putting over an already-over Kevin Nash, and Asuka jobbing to Charlotte at WM all sucked

I suppose Hogan slamming Andre and pinning him broke a completely fictional undefeated/never-been-slammed streak.

But yeah, they tend to not know what to do. They blew off Mr. Perfect's longtime and oft-discussed perfect record on a damn house show.

They think they have one with Cody and I can see merit in that from a going forward with the belt point of view. I love Zayn and would have loved him to win, but I just don't see what happens after.

There's also the possibility (that I don't think anyone has even mentioned yet) that Roman wins at Mania and keeps this thing going.

Saw a stat yesterday that I can't believe is true. The single reign by Roman has surpassed Cena's entire time as champion in 16 reigns combined.

Looking at Cena's reigns now and it's pretty funny. 280, 133, 380, 21, 49, < 1, 84, 77, 20, 14, 133, 49, 14. A bit over 400 days as champ with the last 10 reigns. All that equals 13 reigns and 1,254 days according to Wiki. I have no idea where his other 3 reigns are. But Roman's reign is still a year away from those 13 reigns.

edit: other 3 are world heavyweight championships which are 84, 21, and 49 days long. 154 days with that belt...tied with Benoit.

Who even is left if Roman retains - Bray? AJ Styles?

Hurt Business vs. Bloodline would be fun, though

A year ago, would anyone in the world have thought Sami would be going into a match with a chance to dethrone Roman?

They don't have to have that guy in mind now.

Could be baby Steiner. Could be Austin Theory. Could be an import from another company. Could be someone else who explodes sooner or later. Could be Cody at a later date.

If he retains, I'd expect it's just to get him to across the thousand day mark and Cody wins in a stipulation rematch at SummerSlam. Maybe a rematch against KO or Sami in between Mania and SS.

John Cena or Goldberg. All rubs must be used on part-timers who can then take that rub and give it to another part-timer, and so on and so forth.

I can't imagine Logan Paul or Goldberg, but I honestly could see them having Cena win his record-breaking 17th world title by ending a 2.5 year reign.
