5th round pick, even shorter writeup:

Spoiler:

The voice of wrestling for a good long while now, we'll add good ol' Jim Ross to the Hall. Frankly, the consensus best era for wrestling in our lifetimes wouldn't have been what it was with anyone else on the announce team. Part of that is due to control from on high, of course, but part of that is this man's natural talent and ability. It might be spew, but while there's a lot of great wrestlers left, I think JR's VORannouncer is off the charts (with one or two exceptions, maybe).

Foley was on my list after Sting. Wanted Foley more but Sting's probably more value. meh

Angle and Mick never had a program, did they? That feels like it'd be a great one. Sad that one or two more years for Mick in 01/02 and we probably get that.

I think that's a great pick, DW. JR was at the top of my list as well.

Yeah, I had Foley/Angle/HHH in that order. HHH is prob objectively a better pick than Angle but meh, he never won an olympic gold medal with a broken freakin' neck.

They might have had a program in TNA but obviously Foley was past it then, certainly never in WWE. Could have great.

JR has quite a lot of value for his backstage stuff too, very nice pick.

Don't think there's really been any facemelters yet but a few have gone earlier that I expected. Inoki may be the worst pick of the draft tbh, mainly as I could have probably gotten him a round or two later.

No matter the merits of JR's backstage work, I think it's difficult to add much value to a Hall of Fame pick with stuff that the public didn't see.

Totally agree with that (though it would obviously add electability in general, but since I'm a committee of one that doesn't matter).

I like the idea of an exhibit where there's just a ramp and kids (or immature adults, let's be honest) can put their names in a computer and walk down the ramp to the sound of JR saying "MY GOD! THAT'S (insert patron's name here)'S MUSIC!"

You mean kind of like the Warrior wanted his award to be before the WWE bastardized it into a way to show how philanthropic they are?

I had no idea the clock was on me and apologize for holding this thing up for the past 9 hours.

I'm going to take one of the most revolutionary wrestlers of the 90's and 2000's.

Spoiler:

Spoiler:
Did Rey juice?
1996:

2018:

Rey is kind of a sentimental pick for me because I've been a huge fan of his since before I even saw one of his matches. I read a bunch of articles on how he was this revolutionary guy and saw pictures of him and his moves in the pages of a bunch of Apter mags from 94-96 that captivated me but never saw a match of his until BatB 96.

I consider Rey one of the absolute GOAT wrestlers because he popularized the cruiserweight style in the US while innovating a bunch of moves. I question if there would've even been a cruiserweight division in WCW without him.

Well that Rey pick reminds me, I should probably take this guy:

Spoiler:

While the phenomenon of El Santo barely has any American footprint, he seems to be the consensus GOAT in Mexico. I mean, I'm picking a guy without even having watched him work, but for purposes of the worldwide appeal of my Hall this seems like a slam dunk for value.

My Hall:
Spoiler:
The Rock
Randy Savage
John Cena
Shawn Michaels
El Santo

My next pick seems like really sick value in the 5th round. I’ll take a guy who became a star when the television first became a driving force behind the wrestling industry. He also went on to own and also be the #1 star of the biggest and best territories of the 60’s and 70’s. I’ll take:

Spoiler:
Verne Gagne

Oh, I can catch up a couple of my people giving inducting speeches since they've been drafted.

The Rock to be inducted by Mick Foley
Shawn Michaels to be inducted by HHH

Rey was high up my list. El Santo was on it but I prob wouldn’t have picked him for a while, objectively he could have prob gone first round though.

Verne wasn’t on my board but again it’s a decent pick objectively. I don’t know too much about him but I have a bit of an issue with him booking himself as a 10 time world champ with a total time of over 4000 days, lol.

I’ll try and sort out who is inducting my guys in a bit, and catch up on write ups. We may even get a spreadsheet! (But don’t take anything for granite, not of that may happen)

Yeah agree with this entirely, basically the lucha world getting a mention and your Inoki precedent made me feel like this was the time.

It's one of those picks that holds elite value in some objective sense and yet holds a lot less value when framed in terms of how much better it makes my Hall look to those drafting and railing this.

Basically, once we got past the first few picks, it was difficult for him to almost ever be an amazing or a terrible pick.

In fairness, it was pretty common during that time period for the owner of the promotion (or his son) to hold the top belt. There was a lot of fear of wrestlers jumping to another promotion and destroying the legitimacy of the championship and ruining major storylines.

It should also be noted that the AWA was not an NWA territory for very long after Gagne acquired ownership and went independent in 1960. The AWA toured nationally, in direct competition with NWA territories at times, and had what is considered a legitimate "World Championship."

Well, if Inoki can go in the first round, surely this gentleman is good value in round 5...

Spoiler:

Shohei “Giant” Baba

Inducted by: UNDRAFTED

Along with Inoki, one of the pillars of puroresu. Created All Japan Pro Wrestling in 1972, which became the hotbed of Japanese wrestling in the 70s with their association with the National Wrestling Alliance and ability to bring in the top gaijin. Baba himself was the first ever Japanese NWA World champion, holding the belt three times. Baba would keep AJPW relevant through the 90s with stars like Misawa, who would put on some of the greatest matches in wrestling history.

Great pick. I was going back and forth on Gagne or Baba with my next pick. I figured Baba had the better chance of being there on the way back. I was wrong again

Round 5, Pick 7:

https://youtu.be/RG5ZjU771Wg

Spoiler:
Terry Funk

During Terry Funk's 50 year career, he fought seemingly everybody that's anybody and travelled the world to do so. He began as a classically-trained technical wrestler who rose to the top of the sport and became NWA World Champion in 1975, but is probably much more well known today for revolutionizing Death Match style hardcore matches and popularizing them in the US. He was also terrific on the mic, highlighted during his feud with Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in 1989.

He will be inducted by Mick Foley.

True but it’s just more fun to draft people we’re familiar with. Most of the old school legends will probably go later.

Terry Funk was joint top of my board, the other one will probably get taken before it gets to me too.

Round 6, Pick 1: https://youtu.be/u_t5ryWDZ-c

Spoiler:
Keiji Mutoh

Mutoh would probably be around for a while, but it would be hard for me to have a Wrestling Hall of Fame without my favorite wrestler.

Although never as technically proficient as many of his main event peers in Japan, Mutoh always had the charisma and flair that made his matches "an event" to be entertained by. Mutoh, usually as The Great Muta, took his personality and unique wrestling style all over the world, wrestling in numerous NWA territories, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, shining a light on the wrestling scene in his native Japan. Three Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship, four IWGP Heavyweight Championship, and an NWA World Heavyweight Championship reign highlight his singles accomplishments, and he also won 11 tag team championships between AJPW and NJPW, as well as their respective tag team headline events three times each.

In 2002, he became President of the then-fledgling AJPW and over the following six years led them back into the position of prominence that they had enjoyed for so many years under Giant Baba.

His 2008 is widely considered one of the best years any wrestler has ever had in Japan as he held both the Triple Crown and IWGP Heavyweight Championships simultaneously, as well as having tag team championship reign.

He would go on to found Wrestle-1 and be President from 2013 to 2017. Many consider Wrestle-1 the continuation of the AJPW legacy after the change in ownership and management that led to Mutoh and many other AJPW stars to resign.

Spoiler:
Hall of Fame Inductees:

This. There's a good argument that El Santo was my best value pick, but it was easily my least fun pick because my only knowledge of him is of how big of a legend he is.

I completely agree with this, and my old school quotient will definitely start picking up, but if some want a Hall of Monday Night Wars then they should be able to have that
