Feel the same way about Kaufman.

Also I never mentioned it but DX is another one I didn’t think of and was annoyed I didn’t take, even if it would have meant Billy Gunning the draft. I would just include HBK too fwiw.

Thought of this next pick while researching Kaufman...

Round 13, Pick 6:

Spoiler:

Lance Russell

Inducted by: Jerry Lawler

Legendary announcer known as the “voice of Memphis”, he was the lead announcer for the CWA and associated promotions at the Mid-South Coliseum for nearly forty years. He also made appearances for WCW in the early 90s. Appears at or near the top of most wrestling insiders’ lists of the greatest announcers ever, including Jim Ross, who played the Russell equivalent in the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon (in which Russell himself appeared as the ring announcer).

Also, aware I owe a pick. If it somehow comes around to me please give me my clock and I’ll get caught up; hopefully before then will do it though

Round 13, Pick 7:

Gene Kiniski

Kiniski was one of the first great heels in professional wrestling. Billing himself as "Canada's Greatest Athlete," Kiniski was one of the first heels to use the "arrogant, but capable" gimmicks that guys like Nick Bockwinkel and Ric Flair would run with. He had an over 3-year run as NWA World Champion after defeating Lou Thesz, and tour the world as Champion defeating a who's who of the wrestling world in the late 1960's. He was also part-owner and the face of NWA All Star (the Vancouver territory of the NWA) for about 20 years.

Round 14, Pick 1:

Gory Guerrero

There is considered to be a "Big Three" when it comes to launching the lucha libre tradition, El Santo, Mil Mascaras, and Blue Demon, but Gory Guerrero definitely deserves his place among them. While not being as popular as El Santo or Blue Demon or as well-traveled as Mil Mascaras, Gory was just as much a part of the development of lucha libre because of advancements in in-ring technique and innovative wrestling moves. He is credited with inventing the Gory Special, the Gory Bomb, the Camel Clutch, piledriver, powerbomb, and other moves seen everywhere in the ring today. He is also the patriarch of the Guerrero wrestling family, who had about 80 years of near-continuous activity in the wrestling industry.

For my makeup pick, I'll take the WWF title holders from 1997:

Spoiler:

The Hart Foundation, "new" edition including Bret, Owen, Neidhart, Davey Boy Smith and Brian Pillman. Loved in Canada more than Tim Horton's donuts and maple syrup, and reviled elsewhere. To be inducted by Natalya (who is undrafted, but **** if any of you are going to take her).

I’m curious what people think of this one, and how many had him on their lists...

Round 14, Pick 2:

Spoiler:

Bill Apter

Inducted by: Jerry Lawler

Known, of course, for the “Apter mags”, such as Pro Wrestling Illustrated and Inside Wrestling, that wrote (mostly in kayfabe) about happenings in pro wrestling promotions across North America. While these were not, strictly speaking, his magazines (they were owned and published by someone else), he was so identified with them as a writer, photographer, and eventually editor in chief, that the name stuck. The magazines were invaluable to fans looking for news about promotions they couldn’t watch, and for wrestlers whose careers got big boosts by being featured in the magazines. I myself first learned about the NWA in the pages of PWI, as we didn’t get any of their programming in Canada until TBS showed up in our cable packages in the early 90s. Apter was also responsible for the annual PWI 500 ranking which is still going today.

Why Jerry Lawler to induct? Two reasons — Apter gave Lawler and Memphis wrestling huge exposure in the mags at a time when most of their coverage focused on the top NWA promotions and the WWWF, and Apter was also a friend of Andy Kaufman, and was the one who connected Kaufman and Lawler to run their legendary angle.

When I think of Bill Apter, I think of him going around conducting shoot interviews with wrestlers to get their reactions to Randy Savage's death, and for some reason continually including the question, "If there was a book about Randy Savage, what should the title of it be?" To a man, they all (understandably) reacted rather awkwardly to the weird-ass question.

There's just something about Apter that makes me dislike him intensely. Just comes off like a shady used-car salesman to me.

That said, makes sense as an HOF pick if we're including various types of non-wrestling people (such as Jim Johnston which is a great pick I never would have thought of).

For my next pick, I dare you to find a group of guys who were more over than these guys were at any time. Well, with the exception of Austin and Hogan. These three brothers absolutely set the WCCW on fire for years, but their best work was done when The Freebirds finally turned on them. After that the combination of good looks, great athleticism and and probably the greatest evil foils of all time on the other side catapulted them into the stratosphere. The only thing that stopped these guys was tragedy in the form of injuries and death. Who knows how high these guys could have gone had they not been beset by incident after incident.

My next pick for the Hall of Fame is:

Spoiler:
David, Kevin, and Kerry Von Erich

Next pick:

Spoiler:

I understand the love for the Johnston pick, as he was on my radar as well when he went, but frankly I'm not sure there's a great case that he brought more value to the table than Jimmy Hart did. As a songwriter of entrance themes, certainly Johnston had the superior resume, but Hart put together a very impressive catalog of his own in this regard. From his Wikipedia page:

Quote:
During his years in the professional wrestling business, Hart composed many theme songs for wrestlers in the WWF and WCW. Some of the wrestlers for whom he composed music were Honky Tonk Man, Jimmy Snuka, Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake, The Rockers, The Hart Foundation, Crush, the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, Dusty Rhodes, the Legion of Doom, the Nasty Boys, Ted DiBiase, the Mountie, Hulk Hogan, Sting, the nWo Wolfpac, and 3 Count. He also composed the themes for SummerSlam '88 (which was later reused as the theme for many early Royal Rumble events) and WrestleMania VI (which was later used for the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth events). One of Hart's most notable compositions is Shawn Michaels's entrance theme, "Sexy Boy."
Of course, despite that impressive body of work, the theme-writing isn't his primary claim to fame; his work as a manager is. And really, I think that Jimmy gets underrated in this regard. He was never a favorite of mine and he lacks the smark appeal that comes with being a wittier type like Heenan or Cornette, but he played his role to perfection, drawing big heat for a long period of time and working his ass off to enhance matches. He was a good talker, he would take bumps, he filled the role nicely for a very long time. While I certainly agree that Heenan was the superior manager without any question, Jimmy crushed the other notable WWF managers of the Golden Era.

I think he's very strong value here.

Jimmy was on my radar (as in, nearly picked him two rounds ago and decided to wait it out and then realized I was making the wrong Hart pick).

I'm going to sort of pooh-pooh the media picks (and to a lesser extent the Jim Johnston pick, though it crossed my mind at one point); I don't think anyone 's going to a Hall of Fame and thinking "hey neato it's that reporter guy". I dunno, maybe I just underestimate the impact.

Perhaps I'm overrating him because of his contributions to other much smaller companies but I feel like this is a steal this late. I'm taking the man with the best hair in the business today:

Spoiler:
Yep:

Spoiler:

The current WWE champion, former IWGP champ, helped build TNA with his X-Division run, helped get ROH started by putting on classics with undrafted, Bryan, and others.
And if it were an award, he'd get part of the worst booked feud of 2018. The champ that runs the camp, AJ Styles!

I did the combover for 4-5 years. I didn't realize how bad it was until I was on TV for the first time (local high school sports show) and realized, "Wow, that looks terrible."

But you'll just have to trust me, it's not the combover in Apter's case.

DWetzel is skipped, so without further ado, at pick #98, AND NEEEEEEEEEEEEEW inductee into my Hall of Fame:

Spoiler:

'The Fink' Howard Finkel

It might seem like spew taking a ring announcer, but The Fink is undoubtedly the GOAT and has also had many other backstage roles during his time with the WWF/E, which currently stands at 43 years, making him the company's longest tenured employee. He also notably came up with the Wrestlemania name.
