While contemplating a call villain says "I'll show you" While contemplating a call villain says "I'll show you"

I've had this happen many many times and I don't think I have ever had this happen where the villain didn't have a monster hand.

Has anyone every had someone show a bluff in this scenario?

This line is typically when a villain has a quality hand that could very well be best, but he or she is unsure whether or not they actually want a call because their opponent may have them beat. Unless you're metagaming it up against a familiar foe and in that case, "I'll show you" can mean several things.

The one thing that is 99% accurate here is that the "I'll show you" line means they do not have the nuts.

I've shown bluffs after saying this and seen others do so as well. It's great cause they fold expecting to be shown something strong.

I disagree with this categorically.

I've seen everything from complete air, the mortal nuts, and everything in between.

Well yes, yes I have!

It usually means he's weak. Unless he thinks that you think it usually means he's weak, in which case it means he's strong. Unless he thinks that you think that he thinks it means strong, in which case it means he's weak.

It is entirely player dependent. If a weak player overbets the pot 3x and says he'll show, it's 100% a big hand. Probably also afraid of a draw.

The stronger the player the wider his range is if he says it.

IT could really go either way, i mean i said it before but it ranges from a bluff to the near nuts so. IT really could mean anything. YOu have to narrow down the specific tendencies of the players that do this to figure it out.

I'm quite surprised by the answers I've gotten. I've had this happen to me dozens of times and I have never had anyone renege on the promise to show and I've never had anyone turn over less than a monster hand... maybe not always the nuts, but at bare minimum its top two pair.

Generally I have found that when something like this is said to me, their hand is either very strong or very weak.

It isn't so much WHAT they say, it is HOW it is said (timing/context, tone and timbre of voice and body language etc). It is up to you to decipher if it is a weakness tell and they want you to fold, or they are strong and trying to stop you folding.

I find it helps to slow things down to consider or re-evaluate the pertinent factors you have already observed (especially involuntary physical stuff). The statement, the way it was delivered and body language all has to tell a consistent story before I make a decision based on that info.

If the villian has said said it unprompted when you look like you may be folding then yes, strength. It is said to stop you folding.

About 6 months ago, into the second day of a 3 day tourney, I made a hero call (with QQ) for my tournament life, on a king high and paired board where kings and sets were definitely in his range.

I couldn't make my mind up so I got him talking. What he was saying did not match with his tone and body language. I eventually ruled out the hands that beat mine, called and he insta-mucked.

All just parts of the puzzle.

More often than not, my experience is this as well.

Rarely does someone show the bluff, unless they've already established themselves as a character at the table...

YMMV, and the plural of anecdote isn't data.

This is exactly why it can be effective as a bluff. As long as you don't overdo it.

I know. I thought about starting this thread a few weeks ago and hesitated because I didn't want a 2+2er reading it and end up having them bluff me off a hand.

This could go both ways, but it is still a mistake on the part of the person talking it up, as it gives more potential info that you might pick up on.

It's also lots of fun when they're expecting to see 2 pair or better and you show em 6 high lmao

Snap call.

I've sometimes use this as a bluff at the end of sessions or after I have already showed a monster hand recently
05-17-2013 , 05:02 AM
But yeah I rarely see people show the bluff when saying they'll show

I gotta turn the question around:

What if you've put someone on a decision and they ask, "Will you show me if I fold?" How would you respond if you want a call? If you want a fold?

Edit: Sorry - just found the other thread on this topic: "http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/202/mortar-brick/how-do-you-reply-will-you-show-if-i-fold-1221842/"
