Say you have a big pair, but don't want to get called. Is that against the rules? If so, what is the penalty?

It is typically against the rules, and the penalty in reasonable card rooms can range from a warning to being forced to sit out for a duration.

The penalty is not getting called when you have a big pair.

But that may be what you want late in a satellite.

I'm kind of shocked that somebody with 25k posts a) doesn't know this and b) actually is foolish enough to want to show his hand here.

It's room dependent. You'll either get;

A) A warning
B) Your hand killed
C) A penalty in which you have to sit out a certain amount of hands/rounds
D) B and C

If you do this often enough and be known as a guy who did this, they could (should) kill your hand and give you a penalty without warning.

I didn't say I would do this.

Ya obv why would sb with as mony posts as you post this question?? In an mtt, ( satty or not), jamming and flipping over cards with action pending is obviously against rules/logic/etiquette.

Because it's not always enforced and in some places, not OFTEN enforced. See Jamie Gold.

The normal penalty (read not all rooms) is a 1 orbit penalty. Because of the fact that most of these satellites are very shallow (10-15bb average stacks), and that the antes are very large, my answer to this would be almost never.

Obviously if the penalty is a warning, which I've never seen in any recent memory, then there are times. However those times I believe are nonexistent for any significant seat to any tournament (like a seat worth 2k or more).

If blinds are 2k/4k/500 and you have a what is a tournament average stack of 80k, you not only lose 10.5k at a 9 handed table, but you lose precious chips and any leverage you may have later on in the satellite. This also hugely benefits shorter stacks.

If the average stack is shorter, the larger the effect. With what average stacks normally are, I'd say not worth the benefit, and if it is worth the benefit, then the hand is probably a fold preflop (even aces).
