How much should I tip the dealer and the wait staff? How much should I tip the dealer and the wait staff?

Lumping all the tipping threads into a megathread is one of the things Rapini did correctly. I would encourage whoever's modding this forum to continue that practice.

No tip for pots that result in blinds only, unless it was a preflop raising war where someone folds to a 4 bet shove and there's a decent amount in the pot (pretty rare). If I take an unusually high number of blind only pots in a short time, I'd probably tip $1 after three or four of these pots, but playing 1/2 or 2/5 where I play, that almost never happens.

$1 for small/standard post flop pots.

Anywhere ranging from $2-$5 for larger pots, depending on the size of the pot.

$1 per drink, and I usually order two at a time (a water and a soda or something like that).

Since it looks like tipping will be a hot topic here in the alternate universe, here's my tipping stance from the other thread:

Although I've tried such strategies as moving my tipping to the end of down, as a fairly low-limit player, I tip:
  • Poker Dealers
    • Generally $1 per pot, $2 for big pots, and sometimes $5 in no-limit (or spread-limit) over $300 or so, depending on the sort of hand. More or less if I'm winning or losing.
    • In split-pot games, I tip $1 on profitable hands where I win the high, or on very profitable hands where I take the low.
    • 1-2% of BBJ or table-promotion type payouts with a $5-10 minimum.
    • 1-2% of tournament net wins, with a $5-$10 minimum.
  • Chip Runner
    • $1 about 50% of the time, more likely if I'm requesting a color-up or a hard break or something other than just buying in or re-buying in.
  • Cocktail/Food Service
    • $1 on most soft-drink orders,
    • $1 on all non-soft-drink orders,
    • $1-3 on all food orders, as if I were tipping restaurant rates on table-side food.
  • Cashier/Cage
    • $1 in the tip jar if I've got an odd-dollar cashout.
  • Floor Persons
    • 1-2% of hand-pay type table jackpot and promotion pays.
  • Slot Attendants
    • 1-2% of any W2-G type hand pay.
  • Table Game Dealers
    • Always a '2-Way Yo' when it's my turn to shoot in craps, relative to the table limit. $1, $2 or $5 for each of us, generally, in my case.
    • Occasionally a dealer bet on the side of my bet in games like Pai Gow (tiles and cards), BJ, etc. for half of my per-hand bet size. Roughly once per down.
  • Brush/Board
    • I do not tip the brush/board, although I would if they performed some special service for me -- call in, or rolling my name based on a preferrence, etc. without asking me.

I think the OP was a bit tongue-in-cheek, and I think so far we've demonstrated we can discuss tipping without becoming insane.

The rabid pro-tipping dealers are generally the ones who make the other tipping thread wacky. Doent seem like any have any invaded here yet.

Oh, we can discuss tipping without becoming insane. It's that guy over there who has trouble with it.

Are you sure the rabid anti-tipping nits aren't part of the problem?

I'm not sure there's a problem in either thread, frankly. The discussion has been generally healthy, and I know there's plenty of silent readers who're absorbing what both sides (are there sides, actually?) have had to say. It's gotten heated - but from what I SAW get deleted from the other thread, I would have let most of it fly here.

Also, there are some of us who tip "normally," and still are pretty anti-tipping.

See my hundred or so posts "over there" where I define tipping as stupid but accept that it's the convention and, as such, follow it.

Let's just make a megathread for discussion and make the OP a FAQ on convention (rather than ethics or economics), then. e.g.,

1. You are free to tip however much or however little you want.
2. Most people tip according to the following guidelines or within the following ranges.
3. Any tipping discussion covered by this FAQ will be merged with this megathread. [Specialized scenarios can have their own thread, like how much you should tip a dealer you're sleeping with or whatever else may come up.]

I think most tipping threads start off as questions about convention before they get derailed into general discussion about the philosophy of tipping.

I think there may be some difference of opinion in what the accepted convention is beyond "a buck when you steal more than the blinds, sometimes more on big pots."

It gets a little fuzzy after that.

That said, you're welcome to write up something you think fits the bill, and we'll start this thread over with that at the top.

I'm an habitual over-tipper. They tell me the only cure is lousy service.

Dealers:
$1 per pot, yes even if it's a blind steal.
Up to $5 if: larger than average pot, dealer did something extraordinary, I've been drinking too much.
On rare occasions, but not unheard of, more than $5.

Waitresses -
$1 for beer/water/soda
$2-$3 for liquor, depending on what I'm ordering
Hot waitresses don't necessarily get more per drink, but I'll drink more when they're around, so it works out well for both parties.

In a standard casino game I usually tip the dealer 1-3 bucks, $1 even if I steal the blinds (mostly superstition). More in bigger games and bigger pots; most I ever gave that I can recall was $25 in a fairly huge pot.

In private/underground games it depends on the place, but often a redbird at least if it goes beyond the flop (keeps you getting the invitation). In one juicy game on the east coast I always leave any spare chips between $1-$100 with the dealers when I cash out. And in one underground game here in Tucson there is no rake (to avoid getting busted) but you are expected to tip generously, so anything past the flop gets at least $2, $5-10 for a big pot, and still the $1 if no flop.

As for casino wait-staff, always $1 since I don't eat at the table or drink anything more than coffee, soda or water. But again at private games can be a little more depending on the situation.

Floor staff, I recently gave the brush $20 bucks when when we hit a "room share" in a jackpot hand, and I'll occasionally drop a 20 to them when they steer me to a good table.
