I'm sure you get this constantly so I apologize in advance. I'm going to Vegas for the first time Sunday 18th - Wed 21st. Staying at New York New York, and only pre made plans include touring UNLV as I'm going there in January.

Any general tips? Mainly dealing with where to play $1-$2 NLHE, worth getting VIP for short visit, food to suggest or avoid, etc.

I really appreciate the advice.

NYNY is at the south end of the strip. (1) Google a map of the strip and see where you are. (2) the closest good poker room is at MGM it will have 1-2 and you can walk to it using the over passes as I recall. (3) Be sure to walk the strip up to the Venetian, Mirage, Caesars, Aria, Bellagio, TI, Wynn not mention PH, Bally's, Flamingo, Harrahs. At least stop in and see a few of these poker rooms. (4) Use the NYNY concierge to get tickets to a show. (5) Take the 202 buss down Flamingo to UNLV. (6) Basically I'd just check out all the cool sights. See This list of free attractions. Do the ones on the strip. (7) It will be hot so drink water. (8) Figure out where you'll be living while at UNLV. Take a look at the Bus system. Unless you'll have a car. (9) Play the Sunday Mixed game at TI. (10) For poker, I like to make a little route where I play a couple of hours at one place, then move to the next play a couple of hours, move etc. However NYNY is not a good location for poker rooms. Basically your near: MGM, Excalibur, and Monte Carlo. Next closest are Luxor, Aria, PH. Just look at a map and you'll see. Try This map.

Easiest way to Aria from NY NY: Go into Monte Carlo, go straight to the back, you will find a long walkway with a food court, shops, etc. You follow this all the way, and it will deposit you at Aria, right next to the Aria poker room. (1-3 @Aria) There is also a tram accessible from the walkway that will take you to Bellagio.

Ceasars has an uncapped 1/2 I think. Played uncapped 2/5 there prior. So that should be your best bet if true.

Definitely get a card if you are going to be playing poker, especially if you will be living there starting in January. You will get anywhere from $1 to $2 per hour in comps, which may not amount to much for this trip, but they will not expire and you can add to them when you move there in January. Once again, may not be a lot, but if you play a night or two each week it is at least a free meal a couple times a week, which is very valuable when going to school.

All these are awesome and exactly what I needed. Thank you very much. I'm excited and outside of UNLV tour and Penn&Teller I'll just be visiting hotels/cardrooms/attractions. Again, thank you.

Also will not be taking a car and will be living on campus at least from January to May. Figured would just be few less things to worry about while I settle in and enjoy the time.

Definitely look into the bus system http://www.rtcsnv.com/transit/routes-maps-schedules/ But in fact I find it easiest to use google maps to find a bus route from point A to point B. I think this will be the easiest way for you to get around until you get a car or know someone with a car. Taxi although convient will break your student budget.

Also, what will you be studying?

Does it really matter? UNLV has one of the worst graduation rates in the country. If you are asking a question on this forum, your chances of graduation are extremely slim.

  1. I asked because I know some faculty at UNLV. So it mattered to me. What business is it of yours why I asked?
  2. I am not sure what "graduation rate" implies. Does for example a high graduation rate mean the school is particularly easy?
  3. Saying that "asking a question here implies graduation is slim" is just silly.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. USE LIP BALM. Prepare for giant black boogers.

I take it this is post-grad, or at least you're not entering right after high school?

If you're under 21, you shouldn't play anywhere. You could end up banned for life. Considering most of gambling in the country is owned by two corporations, that's not a good plan. (Well, honestly, it's a great plan for your wallet. There's a reason these corporations are huge.)

I also laugh at the suggestion to "walk" from NYNY to the Wynn in August. Do it at night, when it's only 100 degrees outside instead of 120.

Get a multi-day bus pass, use the Deuce or the express.

Interesting. Unfortunately all my contacts are in Mathematics. I suggest that you also look into the IGI programs. The International gaming institute (IGI) is in the Stan Fulton building http://www.unlv.edu/igi on the Corner of Flamingo and Maryland. I don't suggest this to be your primary focus, just that it is unique to UNLV and is loosely related somewhat to Business Administration. A rare opportunity I would guess. Maybe good for a second major?

Transfer got associates back home, am 24, didn't start college until late, dated a girl with a kid out of school and tried to grow up too fast. Now trying to catchup.

Just walked in room at nYNY, about to get some good and either play at MGM grand or Aria tonight, maybe both.

Definitely check out the Fremont Experience one night. It's cool down there at night.

We'll much of the walk can be done ducking in and out of casinos along the way to cool off. I don't think it will be that bad if he takes precautions. Still taking the Deuce is good plan.

If you're going to weave in and out of casinos and walk the strip, I recommend doing it at 3am and tripping balls on LSD.

At least, that's how I spent my first night in Vegas. No regrets.

No really doing full TR but played first live session tonight, 1-3 at Aria, 3 hours +$126. Took 80% from some old Korean guy who just loved to see river cards. I got AJ once, otherwise Had to find spots to steal pots. Will actually play several next two days. Thanks again for all the advice.
