Since Greektown's room is no longer a dreary smokehouse with degens lurking in every red-bricked corner, I thought I'd attempt a Detroit Poker thread. We now have (3) decent rooms to choose from; so this could be a central place to post and to keep up with what each room has going on (games, tourneys, comps, changes, player treatment, wierd occurances, etc.).

Charity rooms are the "in thing" now......imo

I really wish one of the casinos would run a week or two long poker series with a few smaller buy-in events $100-$300 followed by a main event. Along with NLHE have a few Omaha tournaments mixed in. It would be nice to see something similar to the Chicago Poker Classic here in Detroit. I know thats a long shot, but I'm sure something like this would peak a lot of interest...

I would say the "in thing" in Michigan is online....then the indian reservations (soaring eagle etc), and then canada, vegas, california

Detroit has too much rake, smoke and is in Detroit.

the charity rooms are less than spectacular, and smoky.

MGM, Motor City & Greektown Poker Rooms are all non-smoking. The rake in Detroit is less thatn the rake in California, especially at the Commerece.

What about the world class dealers in detroit!?

No offense. You know I like you & your room. But it is one of the few reliable Charity rooms in the Detroit area that consistently spreads what they claim they're going to spread and even then it is not exactly a deep pool. The "Big Three" and Windsor must have easily 20X the average weekly volume of all of the "Charity" rooms combined. Is there even a single charity room in Detroit itself?

Sorry but 6 months ago it looked like charity rooms were on their way to being the "in thing" but that just doesn't seem to be the case these days. I could be wrong and showing my own bias, but it just doesn't seem that there is as much Michigan Charity Room interest as there was a year ago.

Yeah, dude. We get it. You don't like the Detroit Poker scene. Whatever.

Truth is we have a few good Charity roooms, three decent, clean, well appointed and reasonably well run rooms on this side of the border. I haven't been to CW in sometime, but I am guessing it is still a pretty well run room.

If you draw a 1 hour radius circle you can probalby find >80 well run safe tables that are easy to find.

I can't really count a multiple hour drive in the "Detroit" scene so I don't count the "Indian" casinos nor Lansing nor rooms further West in Michigan.

Like it or not and cheap shots aside, Detroit has one of the more decent and reliable Poker scenes around.

I like the idea of this thread and considered starting a similar one myself recently. But I don't think it will withstand the "heh heh, Greektown and Detroit suck" posts

Pot Odds....actually...I think i am busier now, than i was last year at this time.
The added attraction of Black Jack has been a surprisingly good thing..I even run 2 BJ tables on Fri. and Sat.

Cash games are still the same 2-4 games at all times..and all the tournaments have been restructured to a deep stack format. Last Saturday I had 109 players in a $35 buyin,,$20k starting chips. I expect more this week,,,and Jim Rome is appearing at the track tomorrow night along with some weird co-ed quarter bounce challenge....outta be interesting......

It's not that I don't like the poker scene. I think the Detroit scene is awesome. I hate the facilites that Detroit poker players have to play in. The casinos are overrated. The dealers/floor don't care, the board people don't know what games are offered or currently running. They all have bad attitudes, and an undeserving sense of entitlement.

The charity rooms are a joke, they have made up rules that don't make any sense. I think the biggest problem I have with the casinos and the charity rooms is that there is no desire to keep a customer happy or keep that customer coming back. I have seen the light and I know there is a better way!!!

I haven't found world class dealers anywhere - Vegas, Cali, Foxwoods... this list goes on. Everywhere I've played there are great dealers and terrible dealers in every rotation.

Let me know where the room is that has all world class dealers and I'll come check em' out.

PS: MGM has some really good dealers (and, of course, a couple of horrible ones).

No reason you can't keep the thread going by posting the happenings in the Charity scene.

What do you think is a better way to keep people happy?

MGM and Greektowns new room I found to be nice in that they're away from busy foot traffic and slot machines. I believe Greektown might even have the nicer room of the three big ones, which is quite impressive considering how ****ty the old place was. If they only moved the cage to insider the room it would be perfect. Motor City while you do have the machines just outside of the room, its still a step up from some places that I've been to where they just plop tables in a roped off area. Plus I like the snack and pop machine right there.

Dealing and floor, I've never had an issue with anyone at Motor City and the floor has its act together. Greektown has been mixed, some really awesome dealers, some disgruntled and some who just don't care. The floor again, no issues at all. I like how all dealers have to wear ear pieces to communicate with the floor and desk. They only run two games 1-2 and 3-6 kill so its not that hard to run, plus I like they're using the players card for comps. MGM my biggest gripe about the place when it first opened was how slow the games were running and being dealt. I can't really comment on how well that place is being run. I also can't stand having that stupid racetrack design table, feels awkward lifting my cards and having stacks of chips on it.

Charity Rooms I won't step foot in another one. Never really felt comfortable with them. I've seen some really awful dealing, I've had dealers deal out the hand and comment on the action, just really poor work. I've seen that at Continental Lanes, Fountain View, and Bennys, which I guess is normal if you deal a home game and see a lot of the same people all the time, I just didn't care for it. Sunnybrook was the only place I sorta enjoyed, but after seeing a lot of roughnecks and hotheads I didn't feel to comfortable there. Had a really bad experience at Snookers with floor rulings, one where the guy who ran the place didn't have the stones to tell a regular to turn over his hand after someone asked to see it after calling his river bet and the reg wanted to muck. Instead the floor guy argued with the other guy for 10 f'n minutes "well you can ask, but its really in poor taste". My final straw with Snookers and Charity Rooms was when I said call to some ones river bet, turned over the nuts, saw the dealer grab my cards thinking he was going to put it by the board to show the other player, but instead mucked it. The only time I've caused a scene in public "I SAID CALL! I TABLED THE ABSOLUTE NUTS" nope pot went to the other player, sorry it got mucked.

I emailed Matt Savage got his opinion that it was a bad ruling and if he was there given the situation he'd do everything possible to retrieve the hand since I tabled it and everyone saw it. I decided, no more charity rooms, just stick with casinos for live action and home games for when I want dealer chatter and slowness. Although I have been tempted to do the deep stack tourney at Northville... I believe a 2+2er runs that, pillsbarry?

Oh yah to finish this rant...my only gripe about Michigan poker. I drove to Motor City today at noon. They had 7 tables going which I think is pretty damn good for a Thursday and they were just starting a 300-2000 game. That is really awesome in one of the worst cities and states job wise. The sad part, they didn't run a 15-30 RxR which is what I wanted to play Limit is dead, long live poo flinging.

MC has a $15-30 limit hold 'em game going most Fridays. Tomorrow at noon is a 15/30 round by round which also runs Wednesday and perhaps Tues. as well

Horrid place, difficult to navigate, smoky and a terribly unfriendly staff. I've been 3 times and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Go to the motor city.

In reference to charity rooms, Snookers in Utica is the best I've seen. They actually have more tables than MGM (maybe 10-12), good waitstaff, good dealers, good floor, good food, even a massage girl, and really good action. They run a 2/5 NL game every Saturday @ 5pm - close, and consistenly start games around noon everyday. They have 3 charities and are adding a 4th. I still prefer the casino, but if I were to choose a charity to play at this would be it.

I've been hearing a lot about this place. Does 2/5nl only run on Saturday? Any round by round games, 2/5 that is?

Otter - Michigan recently changes the laws for charities where they can no longer run PLO - so they can run round x round but techinically they have to make it hi/lo for the omaha part. What one guy told me however, is that everyone at the tables agrees that the only low would be the wheel so it is still basically PLO. It seems like a pretty easy loophole to get around and a totally silly rule by the state to just try to shut down and discourage these charity rooms.
