Any chance that they still have decent limit games in the D town casinos? Or have they all been condemned to the 3/6 limit hell that seems to happen all over Michigan.

Agreed about greektown casino. I don't care that the poker room is smoke free since the low ceilings throughout the place make you feel like you were smoking a pack of full flavor smokes in a broom closet.
I can't really tell you any other reason why I prefer the motor city other than smoking really pulls alot of weight with me and I don't smell as bad leaving motor city as greektown. I still laugh last winter playing blackjack before a wings game at Greek town at a "non smoking" table and having a guy in chair behind me smoking away.

CdnSweets, TR? I'm going to try my luck @ Greektown myself tonight. I'll talk to management about doing a Detroit Poker Classic or something like that.

Been a while but when I lived nearby they generally got 3 full tables, they generally cap it at that with alternates before opening a fourth table. some Fridays have had 80+ though. Structure is 3k with 30 min levels starting at 25/50, antes at level 4. Motor City has dailies but they are not well attended. Often, when GT tourney was big, you'd see a lot of people busting out and heading to MCC to play cash.

I was able to get a seat immediately and sat at a friendly 1-2 NLH game. It was mostly regulars who knew each other and the dealer. Good and friendly dealers. There was one other Movement DEMF attendee playing and we both recognized each other by our 'weekend pass' arm bands. Pretty easy table, i doubled up in under 2 hours and had to leave to go to the event.

I went again the next afternoon but there was a waitlist and i couldnt play.

All-in-all, i was really pleased and impressed with the poker options in downtown Detroit. Especially since i was in Detroit for a holiday weekend and didn't even know about the casino options until a few weeks before, it was a total bonus to my trip.

Next time i will come earlier and check out the MGM Grand and Motor City hopefully.

Detroit area poker players should be proud and grateful for all of these options.

As a heads-up- Greektown's room is far and away the nicest, and quietest but if you want action, MCC is your best bet. Whereas GT's room is isolated from the main floor, MCC is right next to a sea of ringing slots. MCC has free sandwiches and other snacks available for poker players and they're bad beat gets run up higher because of stricter rules. MCC also has regular 2/5 and 5/10 NLHE games whereas GT rarely runs anything besides 1/2 NLHE or 3/6 LHE full kill. MGM's room is quiet and away from the main floor but with fewer tables, amenities and a reputation for questionable floor decisions. Beware, MCC's badbeat can get run up over 200k but when that happens getting a seat is next to impossible, the list has been 80+ for 1/2 and 50+ for 2/5 with badbeats over 200k on the line.

Maybe you aren't aware but Greektown moved their poker room late last year to the old Alley Grill and it is completely smoke free. Motor City is now the "smokiest" of the 3 casinos because of the guys who stand at the rail and blow smoke into the room & the people playing slots who smoke.

Pretty sure it's never been up over 200k. $160K is as high as I remember. Both jackpots are around $40k right now; i.e. both the quads over quads jackpot as well as the regular Aces full of Kings jackpot

Also I hear MGM is dying a slow death. Can anyone else confirm? Especially during the week.

I can tell you they pissed me off good at MGM.

cliff notes: They flat out lied to me about having a 2/5 game going.

2 weeks ago it was slow at MC so I called MGM and asked if they had a 2/5nl game? George told me that they had a game. I said, "wow, really? You have a 2/5nl game running?" He again said, "Yes, 2/5nl." I asked if it was full and he said, yes it's a full game w/ 4 on the list. Because I've been fooled before by them I asked how many players were playing? He said we have 10 playing right now. I was convinced and told him to put my name down.

Since the MC game was shorthanded w/out a list I went over there 25 minutes after I called. Guess what? THERE WAS NO 2/5NL GAME!! I talked to George and asked him what's up? He said it broke and they changed it to a 1/2nl game. I asked when and he couldn't say. I pressed and he said about half an hour ago. I then looked up and noticed that I was still number 5 on the list. So you're telling me that 14 people just decided to stop playing 2/5 and play 1/2 instead? I then asked a player and he told me that he has been there for a couple hours and there was no 2/5 game going since he had been there.

Went to Greektown last night and played $1/$2 NLHE for about three hours and here is what I found out. 1) Tournaments for $75 play on Mondays and Thursdays at midday, I believe at 11 am; 2) Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 7 they have $225 tournaments; 3) according to the floor manager, it is not unusual for them to fill 4 tables for all tournaments (40 runners last night); 4) they have no current plans for a tournament series, and they just got a new poker room manager, so they are not sure what's going to happen; 5) bad beat jackpot was over $55k last night.

I was at MGM for a conference a couple Tuesdays ago. I stopped by the poker room to check it out around noon and there were 5 dudes playing 1/2, that was it. Not exactly prime time, but looked pretty dead to me.

I grind @ MGM about 3-6 days/week. Yes there has been a noticeable decline in action during the week, but I've been told that there's less action across the board @ all 3 casino's. I really don't play at the other two so I can't vouch for that. Weekend action is pretty much where it's at if you want a bigger field. Otherwise, its pretty much grinders during the week. Still my preference for poker action though.

Went into Motorcity this afternoon. alot of donk players but juicy action is all i can say...almost to the point of annoying. there were hands going 4 or 5 to the flop regularly. Even raise to squeeze or get a few less people and they all would call. I played for 3.5 hrs and only saw 1 where sm and bb folded to a bet from the button. the table I played had a couple big stacks calling most hands and hitting them.

As for the play gotta a few sick hands that i think only happened since donk's love to call everything...

1) I had 57 on the button
there was a 4 dollar straddle that 3 ppl called
I popped it to 10 more
blinds both call, limpers all folded
flop comes 346 rainbow
straddle bets 20
Me- repop 50 (since the big stack straddler called everything i raised)
straddle calls the raise
turn- 3
straddle bets 30
me make it 60
straddle called my raise
river 4
so board is 34634
staddle now checks with really didnt add up after betting then call my reraise all streets
i checked behind donk shows A4 off....so sick runner runner...i did like his attempt to trap too funny saved me my entire stack really lol.

2) not long after that i was short and had KK in small blind ran into AA big blind. caught what turned to be big break since he turned over an A and showed it after raising me i called but he showed and said was trying to save me money....he had AA i didnt notice the second ace. since he showed me and i didnt notice he agreed to check it down and anyway i obviously lost so was left with 12 bucks!

so here is the fun stuff started going!

-tripled up with QQ after the two big stacks called and QQ held

-tripled again with AQ when with JK9x turn A
i shove since both players i was against were very loose and would play any A and I still had royal flush draw. Additionally both guys still in were very deep so they still reraised each other which didnt make me feel to good. then bam 10 on the river so made broadway and was paid by both since one had Ace/rag second had K/rag.

my best played hand of the night when i actually was playing poker not just shove short.
On the button I had J/10off, there was a $4 straddle on with 3 limpers so i pumped it to 12. 3 callers again super juicy
flop comes 389 rainbow. was going to c-bet but first to act raised 20 so i called other guy folds 1 guy calls. turn Q so i made my straight. first to act (ABC poker player Tight tight) so im hoping he leads again to represent he bets 40 i smooth call and other guy folds. River a 6, first bumps it again same as turn (40), i come over the top all in for additional 88 over his raise...he tanks what seemed really long time but did make the call. i showed the straight he slammed down Q6! never figured the 6 on the end made much difference but new he hit that Q. I must say when i knew i was hold the nuts and this guy i could tell was going to pay me off felt pretty good after a long grind.

after that pot was up to $400...played a few more orbits cashed out for $370.
normally not into talking dollars in cents from a cash game but still cant get over that i ran from 200 down to 12 then made it back to cashout 370.

Sorry for the long post, never did a recap before with hands before.
One more sick hand again thanks to sick donk play
my buddy placed a straddle 4 limpers including the blinds so my buddy made it 10 to go which 2 limpers fold and both blinds call (if you haven't realized that most hands involve my the same 2 big stacks to my left)
buddy had 56 and board came 234.
first guy bumps it 20 second calls for 20 my friend shoves 110 more...tank for original raiser who made the call. other guy folds. original raiser had JJ.
turn J river 3 for the runner runner full house over the flopped straight...i remember that hand since it was my buddy's first hand at the table.

If you can handle the sick beats solid play definitely will have you walking out of there with money in your pocket. again sorry for the scattered post im probably all over the place and lack experience with posts

Awesome. His health was bad six years ago when I left Detroit, glad he's still kicking, especially since I saw him listed on a Detroit mafia as "possibly dead."

He won't talk about it, but he has a crazy past. You guys might know this but he is named in Armen Ketayian's book Money Players about rigging shenanigans in the NBA. He's mentioned only for his huge track betting scam, but he also may have been involved in pointfixing scandals with Isaiah Thomas. (I say 'may' because it is definitely uncertain, and even if he was involved, it was likely at a very low level.)

You probably shouldn't talk to him about any of this stuff because he'll assume you work for the government or something as the guy is very lucky not to be in prison.

I noticed that too. I think it was from 2 years ago. I know about his past, but didn't know for sure he had mafia ties.

Went to Greektown Casino again on Friday and room filled up pretty good. BBJ was up to $57k+ and I think I forgot to mention on my last report that at about 1 pm each day they are bringing out hot dogs for the poker room for free and they keep them coming all night. Pretty nice if you want a quick meal and want something hot.

I keep forgetting to post this news: Greektown now allows what they are calling a "Greektown Straddle" where you can straddle in the $1/$2 game on the button for $5, and first to act pre-flop becomes the small blind and the button has an option when it is their turn.

Also went to the Maverick's Charity Room in Port Huron last night, and they have made a few changes. Their "small" game is now $1/$2 blinds instead of $1/$1 and the max buy-in is up from $60 to $100. Min buy-in is still $20 and it's ridiculous when people buy-in for that amount. They also are now enforcing the rule that if you show your hand to anyone at the table when there are more than 2 players left in the hand, you're hand is dead. It was a rule all along, but they now got serious about it. I believe all the changes came about because of the extra scrutiny they got since they got their beer and liquor license. Last night they had three small game tables going, and they never got their "big" game going, which is still $1/$2 but with a standard $200 max buy-in.

Detroit Quote

It is as legit as any of the other charity rooms I've played at in Michigan. I've noticed nothing fishy or out of the ordinary and the room manager is someone that I consider very much on the up and up. Play is much softer than at the casinos, but the money at the table is not as much and the number of players is limited. Just about what you would expect in a city the size of Port Huron.
