Hey all-

Still working on my stud8 tourney game. So far your help has been fantastic. I have a hand from a recent game for review. Thoughts on all streets welcome. Was giving up the lead on 5th a mistake? River a check/call?

Im guessing the river fold is bad but I just didn't think I had much of a chance at the pot with that raise. I guess he could've hit a back door low. Maybe split 9s and he made 9s up or three 9s on the river but with a 9 dead seems unlikely. Not sure what to think of the raise. It feels like a straight (or maybe flush) but I have a couple blockers to his straight so maybe it was a raise with a made low on the river.

Let me know what you guys think. I'm really trying to work on my hand reading process for these types of situations.

Why did we check 5th?

yeah you're huge on 5th I would raise after he bets but I probably would have just bet myself when I had the chance and 3bet if raised

This was a very weird hand. Bet 5th, generally you want to continue to be the aggressor unless you got a very good reason to check (They could complete low, flush, and you miss). His hand isn't at all scary on 5th, plus you got blockers. Generally when opponent shows a 9+ door card then you should always assume either they got that split pair or they have 3 to that suit. You caught great on 6th and opponent caught bad so you should definitely lead but you probably checked because villain was the aggressor on the previous street and donking didn't occur to you. That's the power of position in Stud 8. Now on the river seeing the weakness from villain on 6th, you try to rectify your mistake by betting here but you have absolutely no reason to. Villain should always assume you got at least a pair of queens so if he's gonna call then its with 2 pair+. As played you should check river and probably fold. Can call if you think opponent bets with miss draw here but it's unlikely.

bet 5th and 6th

river start by checking. call or fold depending on opponent, probably call if unknown purely on the basis of pot odds.

if you acted last on the river and he checked, then it could be worth betting. but that is a thin value bet and you'd be hoping the other guy calls because of pot odds and hoping you're bluffing.

Bet 5th. If he raises you, weird hand.

The way the hand was played, 7th street bluff catcher probably warranted.

If you fold to a raise, but have a hand, I prefer to check bluff catch.

People shake their head all the time on hands I check on 6th or turn in holdem designed to induce bluffs.

Think I make superior play doing such.
