Greetings all. I have been playing/donating to an 8/16 OE game this year {$2 ante, $2 bringin, half kill on scooped pot >$120) and realized my eyeballing the starting hands is not correct. I noticed in an old thread Joe Tall said something like Many Hold'em players come to stud expecting to see a starting hand chart but this doesn't work for this type of game.

So what are you thinking about when deciding to play a hand? Are there any good articles or videos about how to play stud8 you'd recommend? This is a rather normal live limit poker game where calling everything and multiway showdowns is normal. Hope I get to spend some time in this 4rum and get to know you.

For E.

Cards need to be live, ace in the whole is always good. Straight to the six is what you want. Aces up can also scoop sometimes.

Also if you have second best low, even if it's 865 v864 you are burning chips. Watch carefully. Close lows aren't close. I avoid split pairs w an ace/king/etc behind, esp ace.

For O. Nut low draw w backup. Even a bd flush d can aid in your nut low quest. Broadway is deflection.

Hate split pairs in S8 except A. Look for excuse to fold, cant max w them anyway.

Knowing when to get in with split low pairs with low card is very important for success in stud 8.

Not getting in with high only hands also very important. Unless you're opening late.

But isn't this almost never in an aggressive game where someone usually raises coming in?

This game seems to be very high ante though, so unless the house is immediately dropping half the ante, you should play looser than what I am used to.

But a split pair with A kicker is automatic like (6,A) 6 right?

This is a decent hand but would definitely be a lot better as (66)A because you can represent a lot more with the ace showing (split aces, better low draw). Still, (6A)6 >> (9A)9 since when you play the latter hand, you're basically announcing you have split 9s, but with the former hand, you could have a variety of hands. It's hard to say if this is an "automatic" hand -- it will really depend on dead cards, up-cards behind, and the action you're facing.

Tl;dr: Not a hand to go crazy with but good enough to play sometimes.

with hi ante you'll have to play some split pairs in late position with some over cards behind and even limping some Ts-Js with an Ace behind is not a bad spot to be in as a probable equity favorite. Make sure to have discipline to fold 5th if u just have a pair vs even like A28 board
