There's so many books and videos about Holdem that it seems that you can learn holdem that way. In stud obviously it's different, is the best way to learn just by playing. I feel like my math isn't as strong as nl since there isn't as much material, does playing more make it better? Thanks

Experience is ultimately the greatest teacher in all forms of poker. It's best to get some theoretical knowledge and background in fundamentals first, since you'll have fewer mistakes to correct while becoming seasoned. The two best sources are Chip Reese's wonderfully succint chapter in Super System I and of course Sklansky's Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players.

I think you can study as much as you want but you really need to find a live game to put that theory into practice. I think especially with stud, you need to read up on situations and then try them out at the table. There are so many more variables in stud compared to hold'em (dead cards, variable position on the streets) that it is hard to understand the concepts without practicing them. In holdem you can and usually should jam with aces very quick, in stud there are times where you should fold rolled up trips on fourth (not me though, I'll be there for the ride until 7th).

Good feedback. I feel the same way, experience is just so much more important. Hard to get much experience in stud though given how nobody wants to play it

If you are clueless about Stud then a good book like 7CS is pretty crucial to learn the situations where you should go to the river versus the times you need to release. Also it has a great section on how to play 3rd Street.

Stud has plenty of guys that have been playing it for decades and have never improved
