Hi everyone,

I haven’t played a single hand of stud in my life but would like to learn it. So what would you recommend to start with? A good book? Like, is Sklansky Seven Card Stud for advanced players still worth reading? Or is the chapter in Ken Los’ Mixed games a good start? Alternatives? Online resources?

Any advice is highly appreciated

Definitely read the 7CS for advanced players. Great book.

I don't think the Lo book is very good. It's very dry and vanilla. Funny enough I would recommend Phil Hellmuth's book Play Poker Like the Pros for a good introduction on the game of Stud.

I have some beginning and advanced material on my website that expands on some of the topics from 7CS for Advanced Players

Ken Lo's is a good place to start, though if I were you I would get the abridged HORSE version, it has all three 7 card Stud games in it. I would try to get good at all 3 of them, as if you ever run badly in Stud, you can go to Razz, if you run bad at Razz, you can go to Stud. Or just play Stud8, it's the most fun.

Something good about Stud is that the game hasn't been as mined as other variants, so you can read old sources like Ray Zee's and Sklansky's books and get a solid theoretical framework in a way you wouldn't with Hold'em.

PokerStrategy apparently has a good free Razz course, according to a random commenter on the WSOP stream.

If you are willing to pay, however, I hear both Upswing and Runitonce have Stud lessons as part of their Mix games course, but I honestly can't say if the info is good enough to justify the purchase.
