Pairing the door card looks so strong that people will fold anyway. The rule just causes a lot of hands to end early. I guess it is just there because it is impossible to change it. I assume it was designed for really loose games with multiway pots where people would just call no matter what.

As my friend Matt says, it's a dumb rule to appease nits who don't want their trips outdrawn.

I've been called all kinds of times in this exact situation. By guys that had no business being in the pot. So it is not automatic that people will "fold anyway".

Lots of people will call a full bet and honestly if you make a half bet most people will put you on a set versus a full bet.

Back in the day, Paradise Poker played it that you could either make a small or a full bet on 4th with a paired door and if anyone raised it would be of the size of the bet you had made.

It would be interesting if some card historian could pin point when this rule (full bet on 4th with paired door) came about.

Stud is been around for a while, so I assume it originated at least before 1970 in loose games where people tended to call regardless.

I feel like a lot of players aren't really paying attention to the size of the bet so much as they see a bet, especially at low stakes.

The best thing to do is to just bet the full bet every time you bet. If you could work out some GTO frequencies for betting the different sizes that would be better, but it's too hard to solve/too open to human error so as to be exploitable.
