Re: Can we start March Low Content yet?

Sometimes PokerTracker stats can be annoying.

Over my last 5000 hands, my BB/100 is .01.

Though considering how badly I ran during the first part of that set, I should be happy that it is currently positive!

I know the above lines don't make sense. Taken from context (sorta) and designed to stimulate action, or at least to get punters into the sports book.

Andy, why the tuba? Is it hard to play? Is that the biggest brass instrument or is the trombone bigger.
Sorry I forgot about this one. When I was in third grade, some of the older kids in my elementary school came around and demonstrated some instruments. I liked the brass instruments and thought I might like to play trumpet or something. My father suggested "baritone horn" with the idea that I might some day get a music scholarship or something. What he did not count on was that I would get a scholarship to study music....Any old how, I started on euphonium at age nine and picked up tuba at age ten, all in the fourth grade as best I can recall. The school tuba wasn't particularly big by tuba standards but I had to lay it on its side. My folks bought me a tuba that I could play upright when I was in fifth grade and a decent euphonium when I was in sixth grade. I got a real tuba just before I turned 14 and it's my main axe 28 years later (see picture at left). I played both euphonium and tuba until I was 15 and from then on I concentrated on tuba.

As for why, well, it's fun, dammit. It's fun playing loud. It's fun playing low. It's fun being the foundation of the band. It's fun playing faster or higher or softer than people think the tuba should be able to play.

Tuba is the biggest brass instrument. It's an octave lower than trombone, euphonium, or baritone horn. Here are some pics for comparison. Most of these people are friends, so don't say anything mean about them or I'll hit you with the ban hammer.*

Here are a couple of guys with euphoniums. The guy with the glasses plays the same model I used to.

This guy has a real baritone horn. It has a much smaller bore and a much brighter sound:

This is a trombone, which is wrapped somewhat differently:

This is me wearing a shirt with a collar:

Here's a former teacher playing a really big tuba with some assistance a long time ago. It's an octave lower than a regular tuba:

*Well, unless you're funny. If you're unsure whether I think you're funny, I don't.

Weird. It looks like the guy on your left has a tuba too, but it looks as though its plumbing is completely different. (Keys forward instead of up, etc. etc.)

Is one for marching and one for sitting?

Re: Tuba giganticus--all that for one octave lower? Looks like an exponential function at work here. But the baritone horn doesn't look like the square root of a tuba....

Re: Can we start March Low Content yet?

finknik makes a valid point, actually. Someone asked a question, though, and I answered it perhaps more thoroughly than was strictly necessary. I skip lc hand histories, and you're welcome to skip any of my posts.

Both Jerry and I have front-action valves, but his are pistons and mine are rotary. Tubas also come with top-action piston valves like the other instruments pictured. The tuba is a relatively new instrument--less than 200 years old--and there is less standardization than for it than for any other orchestral instrument, I'm pretty sure. Tubas come in F, E-flat, C, and B-flat, whereas many instruments are essentially only made in B-flat (trumpets come in lots of keys). Most French horns have rotary valves and most other brass instruments have pistons, but professional model tubas are fairly evenly divided between the two. The guy on my right has a horn with four pistons and a thumb rotor, which is a fairly common setup.

To make an instrument an octave lower, the tube needs to be twice as long. The diameter of the bore doesn't increase by as much, but I'm not particularly knowledgeable about bore sizes. I have friends who drone on for hours about such things when they want to retaliate for the odd bad-beat story, but I couldn't tell you the bore size of either of my horns.

Re: Can we start March Low Content yet?

Wife tossed my sorry ass in '03. I just saw her on Sunday and she was as surly as ever. She did like the beard back when, though.

My primary outlet is a British-style brass band which rehearses most Mondays and gives about ten performances a year. My last paid gig was last Easter and my next paid gig is, um, Easter. The stuff I do for pay just isn't a lot of fun so I do zero hustling.

As for whether it's hard to play, it is more physically demanding than other instruments, and it's somewhat harder to play really fast, but you wouldn't know that listening to, say, Pat Sheridan.
