Here over the pond it's practically a subversive and mysterious subculture. Real ale sorts are an odd breed. Pardon the profanities contained therein, but a cult comic did a skit on them years ago. I don't know how an American audience will respond, but here goes. They're a bit big to post straight into the forum.

I must say the likeness to Andy's avatar is uncanny.

A bugle has zero valves. The note changes are dependent on how quickly the player buzzes his lips. When you play a brass instrument you are essentially buzzing your lips to create a tone that is amplified by the horn. The frequency of the buzzing creates different notes. These can be further modified by adjusting the length of the horn, which is what the valves (or the slide in the case of a Trombone) do.

I played Euphonium Horn and Trombone in the distant past Andy!
Well that's much better, thanks!

Great stuff! We've got the same band of twits over here going on and on about microbrews. Have yet to see one bring a hydrometer into a bar, though the day can't be far off...

Who's the artist?

The funny thing is you can't really measure ABV with a hydrometer, I don't think - the only way I know how to calculate it is by comparing hydrometer readings before and after fermentation.

Another kind of funny thing is that from a home-brewing perspective, ales are easy to make and lagers are hard to make, so most people start with ales and move into lagers, so in home-brewing, ale-making is a novice thing and lager-making is a more advanced thing. In commercial brewing though it's just as easy to make lagers, and it's fairly easy to make a lager that tasted good enough, has enough ABV and can be made cheaply, so most commercial beers are lagers and they sort of get a bad name because of that. Nothing wrong with them though, some of my favorite beers are lagers.

Anyway I love the cartoons, esp the part where beardo is getting ready to go out and sprays food bits into his beard ("with soup!")

If we're now on the subject of ales, let me just say I have a new one to add to my list of favorites: Green Flash West Coast IPA.

Although at 7% ABV, it's not something that you will drink if you're having three or four...

I'm raising 4th because I'm ahead of his range and I may get him to pull a "WTF, DID HE JUST RAISE ME WITH A 9? OMG!!! I RERAISE W my K6 down"

I didn't raise 5th because my 8 in the hole now puts me behind enough of his stealing range.

Awesome, all_in. I like to imagine that my friends and I aren't quite this insufferable. I'm a little surprised that "*****" in the URL made it past the profanity filter. I suppose "pussy" passes muster, though. "****," less so.

Nonsense. The guy in the cartoon has a mustache. Mustaches are very bad for tuba playing.

I'll probably never grow the beard out like it is in my avatar again, but it's not like you have to try getting crap caught in it.

Oh hell yeah. I can't think of a single reason why people do this.
Well if it puts you mugs on tilt that would be one reason.

I was very disappointed when I found out that Death Cab for Cutie was just another lame indie band. The Bonzo Dog Band is a longtime favorite of mine.

That ninja video is a bit messed up, but I don't think the song warrants a second listen. I might be old.

I can not think of a group that I hate more than Death Cab for Cutie. They sound like nursery rhymes on meth.

Married with kids. Haven't been stinking drunk in well over a decade.

Nothing against those who do that, BTW -- it's just not part of my life any more.

Holy f'n hack-a-bank, dare I ask which bank? Maybe you should tell us out of good will so our money will be safe?

I am drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon tall-boy.
