Playing low stakes, medium ante stud -- say a .40-.80 game with .10 ante and .20 bring in -- I have found players make many more calling than folding errors.

To adapt, I think it's important to play better starting hands than opponents, intending to go to show down. Now, you want to still look for steal opportunities and strategic opportunities to play hands with chances to improve in the right circumstances. And you must be aware of different opponent styles -- some players will bet/fold on later streets, some will call with almost nothing, some are decent (like you).

But it's important to avoid raised/reraised pots on third/fourth street with weak hands. Big pairs can go way up in value when you can thin the field on fifth. Big draws can go way up when you can't. Either way, you don't want to be trying to suck out on bigger hands -- let your opponents do that.
