I've been looking at learning the game of stud and found a 4/8 game at the commerce casino. Min buy in is $40 and no max buy in, I am curious as to what the usual buy in is for a game like this.

You'd probably be covered for all contingencies with $100 on the table. I'd probably buy in for two or three hundred because I'm a notorious donk in 4-8 games, but if you are just learning and not so worried about things like image, why not just short buy for $40? You won't be able to exploit juicy situations, but there may not be any juicy situations and that way you couldn't get hurt for more than $40.

If a one bet goes in on every street, you will invest $32 (4BB) in one hand. If every street is capped (5 bet cap), you will invest $160 in one hand. If you keep your stack at $200 you will never run out.

20 big bets should keep you comfortable in most games. In lower limit games, where there is a lot of chasing, you may want more like 30.

Ty for all the answers. Looks like a buy in of $200-$300 is the way to go.
