Hopefully someone takes another shot at it. People only have so much time to play and probably don't really want to spend a lot of it traveling to do it.

My worry is that the cash games in GR will get diluted on Thursday (4 open) and Friday (3 open) to the point where they wont run 'good' all night. Additional rooms 'nearby' may limit the player pool even more since they wont have to travel to play. GL

That sounds like a reasonable explanation of why it happened, but it also sounds pretty sloppy. Why would people who are managing a tournament as important as an HPT event be involved with cash games at the same time?

Rounders (Woodys) only has 1 charity for the whole day this week, so no shut down period but maybe no chips later in day either.

They may reduce the day BI, but I don't know. The rxr game has been 'moved' ... GL

Good showing at Firekeepers $240 on Sunday. They paid out 10 places with the winner getting a 'perfect' $4900 (no paperwork if you get paid $4999 or less after the BI). I lost some of my chips to a guy who plays more hands than I do!! 9h exposed PF, I raise with AK OTB and he leads out on all 3 streets with a board of 9849A. Shows A9, really!! Card dead after that before bowing out AQ<KK (he hit quads!!).

Next Sunday will be the $400 '5th Sunday' tournament where you get 25K chips instead of the normal 15K for the 120/240. Structure will remain the same. They are also giving away $180K on Saturday from 3pm to 9pm. Poker players who have been logged in during August do have a shot at this give away. GL

Muskegon's only room is at Northway Lanes in the city of Muskegon. Not only don't we have charity poker seven days a week, we aren't close to any of the casinos. The nearest casino that deals poker tournaments is Soaring Eagle, which is 103 miles from my house.
Don't they have it at Booyahs anymore? Thought that was Mon-Wed. .

No, the web site says they do, but it hasn't been updated in months. There was evidently some disagreement between the bar and poker people about when everything should be closed up and they were out of Booyah's within a month of starting.

Then on the Michigan Gaming Control Board web site (see link below) I found out that Pope's Pub was going to have poker in Fruitport. They were licensed for three days, but it never happened, so there is still only the one room at Northway Lanes in the city of Muskegon.

You practically have to hire a detective to figure out what's really going on in Muskegon.

EDIT: Here is the link to search for poker rooms in Michigan by country or city. Keep in mind that some of the Grand Rapids rooms only have cash games, no tournaments.

Great tournament,good structure,decent pay outs,field size,etc.
Good dealers and the room is run well.
Non smoking also.
That's a little far for me right now. I'm a caregiver for an elderly relative, so I don't have a lot of time when I can get away and have a poker night. And Firekeepers is a 244-mile round trip, a little much for me right now. But I will keep it in mind for the future.

I posted this in the Detroit thread a few minutes ago:

Hey, just wanted to tell you guys that I learned a lot hanging out in this thread. At the same time, I was very frustrated that we had nothing like that for West Michigan.

You guys demand and share information. My room in Muskegon hasn't updated their web site for six months. According to the tournament director, they have no plans to do so. I showed up for a tournament a month ago and found out that the bowling alley was closed for maintenance. It would have been nice to know that.

I decided to start a West Michigan thread, made some inquiries and found out that someone had beat me to it and started it in late July.

I won't be in this thread much, if at all, but I will take what I learned from you guys and do my best to help get our side of the state organized.

Thanks again,

Big poker weekend in WM ...

Lots of charity action in GR if you need it ... Westgate, Lincoln and Shamrock

Should be a very good PLO game at Firekeepers tonight as well.

Firekeepers is giving away $180K Saturday from 3pm to 9pm .. if you have been logged into the system in August you will have received 'entries' and could be chosen. The promo is for the whole casino, not just the poker room so the entries are probably dominated by table/slot folks .. but you need to be there to win.

Firekeepers has their 5th Sunday $400 (25K chips) starting at Noon.

Soaring Eagle should have a $280? this Saturday at 1100 or Noon as well.

Have fun, no plans set as of yet, but probably be at Firekeepers on Sat. for sure. GL

That is a very good link and should be added to everyone's phone 'somehow' (don't ask me). I know a guy who has it right on his home page.

Full charity action tonight .. Woodys (Rounders), Westgate, Lincoln and Shamrock

PLO at Firekeepers as well has been pretty steady on Tue/Thur/Sat .. GL

Also the GR thread was dead for a bit when I 're-opened' it here recently. So I started the WM thread to see if either garnered any interest at all.

The GR is probably mainly for charity stuff, but will probably include Holland and Muskegon by default as well.

The WM thread was meant to include the 2 casinos as well as any charity action outside of the Kent/Ottawa county area.

Not sure what this does for Lansing ... but I haven't seen any posts from that area as of yet. GL
I agree that it should be about the entire West Michigan area. I spent some time on the millionaire party locator yesterday, and there isn't much out there. No charity rooms in Traverse City, Holland, basically the entire Lakeshore except for the one room in Muskegon. Only one room going in Kalamazoo also, that really surprised me.

This area needs all the help it can get. I'm going to start telling a few players in Muskegon about this thread, but I want to be careful not to tap the fish tank.

For example, I have a friend in Spring Lake who plays both in Muskegon and at TJs. At one time she had a poker coach/backer, and she played heads-up with her coach every day for a year. She's obviously not a fish, and that is the kind of person that I'm looking for--someone who is already a good player, who knows her way around and can make some positive contributions to this thread.

Of course, anyone that manages to find us will always be welcome.

Right, but seeing as Grand Rapids is in Western Michigan, doesn't having it as a separate thread somewhat cannibalize this one? The GR thread is a subset of this one - is that necessary? You and answer are regularly posting in both.

I agree, they should be consolidated, and it sounds like Answer, who opened this one and the moderator are all open to that as well.

I will post a link to this thread in the GR thread so that if the two threads are consolidated, the GR thread posters and readers won't be caught off guard.

As some of you already know, there are threads for both Grand Rapids and West Michigan. Some of us who post in both threads think that the two threads should be consolidated into the West Michigan Thread.

Here is a link to that thead:

I think the West Michigan thread should stand 'as named' and get the past GR posts pulled into it somehow since it 'should' include the casinos as well as the charity rooms. There are no casinos in GR (yet) that have poker so I want more to feel welcome posting. If it's easier to just rename the GR thread and pull in the WM posts then so be it.

As in the case when you 'accuse' someone of living in "Detroit" (No sir, I live in Bloomfield Hills .. yes sir, you live in Detroit), I'm sure someone from outside of Kent County isn't going to feel 'right' posting in the GR thread but they would feel very welcome in the West Michigan thread once they saw 'Keepers and Soaring Eagle included.

I don't think there is a 'central' Michigan the way we talk about ourselves. Basically if you sniff I-75/I-23 you are from the east and that leaves I-69 'to the west'. I'm not sure what Jackson claims to be (other than a prison town) so they will have to decide for themselves. GL

Everything that you said makes since. I'm for rolling it all into West Michigan. I've never heard anyone talk about Central Michigan other than the university. My definition of west would be pretty close to yours. It can depend on a lot of things.

We talk about the Grand Rapids/Muskegon/Holland triangle, while some Detroit pros will drive an hour or more to find mixed games, round by round or other types of tournaments if they think it's a good value. Sometimes they have enough enough pull to ask ahead for specific games to be dealt.

In any case, yes let's make it about all of West Michigan, however you choose to define that. We might learn some things that we knew little or nothing about, like a new charity room coming to Greenville or a televised tournament at Four Winds. You never know.

I thought the three TJs rooms were the only ones in the Grand Rapids running tournaments? In fact, at one point in this thread I said that as far as I know there are no other tournaments in GR and no one corrected me.

To the best of your knowledge, how many rooms in GR run tournaments?

Make sure you check with your poker room to see if they are open on Labor Day. If your room's web site doesn't say they are closed, call them. Also, bowling alleys usually close for maintenance for a week or so every year. Make sure you know when that's coming. I got burned on that one a few weeks ago.

I would say so ... Firekeepers was rocking over the weekend.

1) I was told that they had 3 PLO tables going Thursday night, one went to 4 AM.

2) Although the dealers said it was a bit light on the waiting lists, we had PLO and 1/2 going all night Friday into my Saturday morning break at 400 .. not sure if a 2/5 game got going.

3) Waiting lists were overflowing Saturday after 100 in anticipation for the drawings. We had a 2/5 game going by 300 and PLO at 500 after they called in a dealer to cover the game. A 5/10 PLO game broke out around 1200 as well. The 2/5 game went all night into Sunday morning.

I have no information on the $400 tournament since I went home at 900 AM from the all night session of 2/5 and PLO.

I was told that PLO happens on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday but with the increased interest it could happen on other nights as well with Friday the most likely other candidate.

It was a little stressful on the dealers Saturday since the Noon tournament had quite a few more than normal and cash lists were blitzed through 200 AM, but hopefully they were taken care of by the players. I did a little more than normal even though I go my clocked cleaned a bit due to some bad play and bad timing on other hands. Had a blast though as I wanted to see if I could actually pull a 'major' weekend. Played from 4pm Fri to 4am Sat and 11am Sat to 9am Sun morning. That is a bunch for me!!

Largest pot I saw at one of my tables was a $3K 1/3 PLO pot that was scooped by the 'behind' player after running 2 Rivers. And I was told there was an $11K 5/10 PLO pot that was won with 2 pair (9s and 5s) ... really!!

Pretty much all of the players were very respectful of the room, dealers and 'questionable' play that happens from time to time. Only issue that came up was the PLO players had also signed up for the 2/5 game and didn't really want to play 2/5 NLHE only. One player at the table objected to RxR and there was a little heat applied until the 5pm dealer showed up and there were enough players on the 2/5 list to fill in the 'now' vacant seats. GL

New TV channel dedicated to poker. I hope I don't have to move up to a more expensive cable tier to get it.
