Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

I'm planning on playing the HPT. Also going to be playing in the $185 Month-End Tournament on the 30th.

I don't go up there for cash games...Firekeepers is closer, and The Horseshoe is Juicier for the same travel time.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

Had some time day and heard rumor of a 2-5 game at Woody's during the day. It indeed did run around Noon. Broke after about 3 hours when the action left the table, but pretty cool to see 2-5 start to run dayside in the GR area. They were getting a list together for next week.

No kidding!? That is VERY interesting that a 2/5 game would spark at Noon.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

It doesn't look like too many people from the GR area post on here? I've been "off & on" my poker game over past few years. However, this year I actually set some goals which require me to log some hours.

Best of luck to everyone, but I'm coming for your cash

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

Woody's is regularly running a big game basically every day. Monday is still impossible to get into, but Tuesday has 2-5 around noon, I believe Wednesday and Thursday also have lists, and Saturday night always has 2-5 running.

TJ's is apparently running 5-10 HORSE on Thursdays. That used to be a PLO game. No idea if it goes reguarly or not.

Monday is impossible to get into the 2-5 game or any game? Woody's has really become this steady/busy? I mostly played at Westgate in the past due to off-and-on action at Woody's...and serious rumors of player collusion not too long ago.

If the game has cleaned-up and it's as busy/steady as you're making it out to be, I'll be visiting soon.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

They run a 1-2 RxR game Monday nights that has in impenetrable list. Basically have told certain players they aren't allowed into the game. 2-5 is accessible, though you may have to wait depending on the day. Also RxR may be going on Wednesday nights.

Action was slow when they started opening at 10am, but now there are regularly 2 tables running all day long. Action is usually pretty good, though there are a few high-end TAG regulars who seem to be there every time I am.

The room is aware of their past reputation, and I haven't seen any further evidence of collusion. There are also enough bad players to keep things profitable no matter what. Collusion is way more problematic in the home games.

Westgate still has good tourney action, but never anything more than 1-2, and seems to me to have become a rockfest with a bunch of young aggressive players sprinkled in. Woody's and TJ's have the best action right now. TJ's Friday and Saturday night tourneys are good value, though cash can be frustrating with all the terribad tournament players buying in for $50 and trying to double up to get their buy-in back and hit-n-run.

Woody's is my choice for cash games in the area. They certainly favor regulars in certain situations, but I feel the money there is worth it.

Thank you for the info! I had no idea they opened at 10am. That's great. I had the same experience at Westgate last I played. Lots of rocks with about 2-3 aggressors per table. 2-5 used to kick off around 8pm and play till close.

Glad to hear that Woody's has good action right now....i was getting tired of driving to Firekeepers and The Horseshoe.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

I've been going to Woody's while I'm in town for the month and really enjoying it for the most part. I haven't had too much success at the Tuesday 2-5@noon (the regular starting lineup features mostly older guys and rocks with dust gathering on their chip stacks), and Sunday nights are usually pretty slow, but other than that the action seems pretty amazing.

I'd always heard someone couldn't "go pro" playing 1-2, but if they said they played at Woody's, I'd believe it was possible. It seems like no matter which table I end up at, there are always a few players that are just drop-dead terrible and feeding chips to the rest of the table. I've had maybe two or three losing sessions in the last month, but in each case there I brought my solid F game and shouldn't have been playing in the first place.

Just about every game you can open to 12-15 and get several callers, if you're card dead it can get old really fast, but as long as you're patient enough to wait for strong hands without trying to force the action/make someone fold, you'll just make tons of money. There's just about always someone at the table willing to stack off with top pair no kicker, even against guys who are playing roughly one hand every two hours.

It's good times.

Dealers are solid and personable, the kind of guys you can hang out and get a drink with. Most of them run the game well with a common sense interpretation of the rules: keep the game moving, let guys do what they intend to do, warn them first if they mix up procedure, etc. I don't think I've seen anything happen in my month there that made me think "Woah, that's not right" or "Hey, that's not fair."

They're generally really on the ball about keeping wait lists short, opening tables as soon as there's enough guys to keep a new table going (even if it means playing short) and getting guys off the waitlists and onto the tables. Some of the big games can be tough to get into, but that's because they're more populated with regs that are going to come in and play all day and (my understanding is) they can't really "afford" to open more than one table of the big games without causing the charities to run out of chips.

Only thing that disappoints me is that the menu at Woody's is pretty much the nut low for healthy food options.... it's fine mediocre pub food if you're only there occasionally, but God help you if you're going to be eating there every day.

Thanks for the update. I haven't made it out to Woodys lately but the action is always good there especially in the last hour before they close when everyone is trying to get unstuck.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

I have been running well, which of course helps, but it just seems like the action has been really good at Woody's and TJ's lately.

Friday nights are blowing up at TJ's with the tournament running. Reports of good RxR games and multiple cash tables starting up around 5:30.

Woody's has the normal collection of donks throughout the day. Plenty of action and plenty of drinking there on the weekends.

The weather is helping keep players inside and the action has benefitted. Going to Firekeepers tomorrow to see if I can keep the run-good going.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

TR from my time at FireKeepers, haven't played there since last summer.

I really like this room. Well-run, good dealers, the automatic shufflers help the game move fast, and goodness, most of the players are just terri-bad.

BBJ is at about 70K right now. Plenty of ppl there playing just for the jackpot to hit. Leads to plenty of nitty play. You can run over most 1-2 tables. Occasionally there are tables that get some gambool going, but I was shocked at how many obviously bluff spots I got away with with. Small bets, taking down pots, with very likely the 4th-best hand.

Also, as a beer nerd, I thought the FireKeepers Ale was pretty good. $4 for a draft and worth a try.

Not a ton of need to go down to FK what with plenty of action in the local charity rooms, and no difference in rake ($5 for rake, $1 for BBJ); but I have had a great time every time I've played there. Will definitely be back for the Mid-Stakes Poker Tour in August.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

I like FK as well. I think I'm going to plan on going down there next weekend for a session. I just got back from Soaring Eagle. Played cash on Friday from 4pm - 1:30am. Ended down $33. There is a TON better action at FK!!!

I played fine in the Tournament today. I liked every move I made....just got caught by a bad player making a bad call and getting lucky....maybe next month

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

The Soaring Eagle tourney is advertised as a Deep Stack, but after about 4 levels (and two breaks?) it's not really anymore.

However, the amount of dead money in it is still astounding, and probably worth giving it a shot once in a while. I prefer the TJ's $125 tourney, which I'll be playing in tomorrow.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

Bad news for area players, Woody's got popped by Wyoming PD last week Monday for over-selling chips.

Can't confirm any info b/c I was not there, but the rumor is around $16,000 in $100 chips were confiscated. That would be $16,000 over the 15K limit for the charity.

Today is last day, and a big suspension is probably the minimum punishment. Really too bad, b/c the room had gained day-time traffic, and while there probably was some under the table selling of chips to keep games running, I hadn't heard of anything quite like this going on at a regular basis.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

TJ's has started this week opening at 10am, supposedly with a 2-5 set to run on Monday's. I have no idea if there's been consistent action there or not. They also added two charities for Friday/Saturday nights, which was much needed anyways.

I think TJ's will inherit many of the Woody's players given their proximity, they already were having an uptick in business according to their dealers after Century Lanes caught on fire in Holland.

I prefer TJ's, but I think both places will have their moments (and opportunities) to be the best place to play post-Woodys.

I just wish Firekeepers was closer!

I think the fire started in the kitchen. Not sure about the extent, but I know it's closed down for repairs. You can Google it, was all over the news.

Re: Grand Rapids, Michigan

If you want to play at Noon, call ahead for TJ's. Sometimes a game, sometimes not. All depends on the day.

Weekends are best for both places. I like playing on Wednesdays at Westgate b/c their NLO (yes, No limit Omaha, cause who the hell can count a pot???) is the biggest LOLdonkament in the area. Also spurs some cash game action.

Both places are steady, but one month after the death of Woody's no one has taken the "action" mantel as of yet. I guess TJ's has the best chance as some classic fish have make cameos there.

So that NLO at westgate is just a donkament, or is there NLO cash games there too?
