A regular 2/4 game and occasional 3/6 kill game goes on at RR. NL has destroyed all in its path, and PLO is picking up the scraps.

Originally posted this in the Grinders moving to Vancouver thread on NVG, but thought I'd ask here.

I've been exclusively an online SnG/MTT rec player the last year or so living in Vancouver, and I'm planning on dipping the toe in the water of live play. There are a ton of live tournaments coming up in the next few months and it seems like a good time to give it a shot and get out from behind the keyboard. I don't have any huge expectations, and for me I'm still nowhere near good enough to call this anything other than a fun hobby. So as a complete noob to the live scene, any advice for me about trying a Satellite at Fraser Downs this weekend? I was thinking of entering a noon event on Sunday for $90 that gives seats to the $880 Fall Poker Championship in a couple weeks. Anyone play at Fraser Downs regularly that has any tips? How early do you generally have to get there to reg for a weekend tournament? Any major gotchas or things to be aware of playing there? Same for Edgewater. I'm thinking of entering a few of the nightly WCPC Sats running there in the next few weeks. Anyone have general advice about those places or things you wish someone had told you when you first took a step from online into the live scene? Especially in Vancouver.

I can advise you to get the salmon at Edgewater but to RUN away from their broccoli cheese soup.

Make sure you put out your cigarette before you enter the casino.

Do any midstakes fixed hold'em games run during the WSOPC? Also, I've never been cross-border to play poker: do I have to declare if I have >$10k in cash on me?

The limit game all dried up. Durning the tourneys big plo and nl games run.
And yes u have to declare over 10k at the boarder. do not try and sneak it across. U will get busted and turned around.

I'm coming to Vancouver at the start of August for a wedding and I was wondering if the action is good enough at 2/5 to merit staying for a little longer (or coming a little earlier).

Also I know it's a little early to look for tournament schedules but can I expect anything in July/August.

Thanks!

Hey guys,

I've got a layover in Vancouver in a couple weeks and was hoping to run off and play some poker. I checked online and saw River Rock is really close to the airport but are there any other casinos nearby that also offer poker?

Thanks!

River Rock is the busiest room and most accessible from the airport.

Edgewater downtown is your next best bet. It is a trip on the Canada Line and a short walk away. Both will spread 1/2 and 2/5 NL at almost all hours of the day.

There's also Starlight in New Westminster, Cascades in Langley, Fraser Downs in Surrey, Boulevard (Hard Rock now) in Coquitlam, Grand Villa in Burnaby. All are smaller rooms but you should be at most 15 minutes away from a room no matter where you are in the Lower Mainland.

There are daily tournaments at each room with small buy ins. Don't expect any big prize events, but check the poker room schedules on the websites for each of the rooms I just listed.

If you're looking for 2/5 NL I would focus on River Rock or Edgewater.

Thanks very much. If I'm not too worried about stepping down to play 1/2 if 2/5 isn't running will I basically be able to play when I want?

How about PLO? (1/2 or 2/5 again), is there a decent chance of that running?

It's a shame the racebook is adjacent from the poker room now at the River Rock.

Everytime I played that game it was the same 7-8 regs playing, and any new player that sat down got lectured and lessoned on every mistake and bad call he or she made.

Most ******ed reg game Ive ever experienced, it`s like they just want to sit around and pay rake to sit and chat with each other.

I'll have a chance to play in Vancouver in a couple of weeks and have a question:

Since I assume Canadian games are played in Canadian $$, does the casino accept American $$ and, if they do, how badly do they rape you on the exchange rate?

Also, will they exchange back to American when you cash out?

It's all in Canadian $$$ obviously.

They'll change US $$$ at the cage but be prepared to lose money on both exchanges.

That's what I figured, thanks. Maybe I'll see if exchanging at the airport might be worth it.

Hmm, % lost changing to loonies, % rake, % tips, % changing back from loonies ==> tough game.
