Yes it started on march 11. Same as Edgewater, it's daily at 10:00am. $80, 8000 chips, 20mn levels, rebuys on first hour. 3 to 5 tables

I host a small stakes (blinds .25/.50) home game in East Van. Have a couple of spots for Wed night if you want to join us. PM me your cell # and tell me a bit about yourself if you want to join. We're a social game, not a bankroll-building machine.

Room updates:

GV has added 5/T, it's running on w/e nights, and perhaps midweek, idk this last part for sure. The also have 2-2 PLO, BI 100-600. These added games are wonderful, but it's still just a 10 table room, the wait list for every game on Friday night was Parq-like. The 1/3 seemed to have the normal turnover, but I played PLO for about 5 hours, and I don't think we turned over 5 seats the entire time. One guy that joined us as I was leaving said he waited 3 hours to get a seat.

And they STILL don't have a liquor license.

Over at Parq, starting May 1, they will no longer reimburse for parking. People who gamble a lot (too much) in the pits can get a parking pass; if you are a poker reg you also can get a pass from the poker floors, but if this announcement is news to you, then prob you won't qualify. If there is no event at BC Place or Rogers, I think it's $10 5pm until midnight, another $10 until the wee hours. If there's an event, it varies between $25-40 afaik.

I have no idea what this will do to the games, nor do I have any idea why they are bringing in this policy.

Good thing I went a couple of weeks ago to get a chip for my poker collection; distance alone pretty much has this my off my list, but no reimbursed parking cements it.

Will be interesting to see how long this room lasts in it's current incarnation. Just seems to be taking up a huge amount of extremely highly priced floor space, which I can't see lasting.

I think it's pretty funny the negative attitudes I'm seeing here.

In the last few months, these are the major changes I've seen to the Vancouver poker scene...

Parq adds 2 tables
Villa adds 4 tables
Villa adds PLO
Villa adds 5/10 nl
Parq starts to run 2/5 nl on a more regular basis
Parq brings back daily tournaments

After the horrors of 2016/2017 (possibility of no poker at Parq, reduced tables at rooms everywhere, rake increases all over the place), for the first time in years I'm feeling positive about the direction poker in this city is heading.

Do I really want to play poker with people who will turn away from a casino because of paid parking? Nah, those are exactly the kind of people I'd rather not have in the games.

I think you bring a good reminder that around this time last year, some of us were imagining a future where poker consisted of weekend trips to Vegas. So the fact that it's still going in DT is a good thing. But I don't see how turning off a rec who plays 1x/month or less from trying to get in the game can be a good thing. IDK who the Parq floors are giving passes to, but assuming it's most of the regs, well, to use your words, plenty of them "are exactly the kind of people I'd rather not have in the games." (I'm sure some of them don't want to see me either.)

It's not the floors' job to get us action, but a policy implemented from above that will to some extent keep the games reggy and nitty is less than ideal. But still better than flying to Vegas.

PLO update at Villa: today (Thursday) they launched the game with 8-9 players at 1pm. So it seems to be firmly established there.

How is my offer good to be true? I'm not offering an easy job. I'm looking for professional high stakes reg to play a very tough game with only a tiny edge. I just hope there's some pokerstar high stakes regs who live in vancouver after blackfriday wanna make more money. But those "soft" tables prob crush any live game easily even they are much more soft than ps.

There's a different type of person who sits in (or could manage to get into) the game?

Hey guys, just curious on people's experience going to open invite poker games on places like meetup.com.

I'm not too concerned regarding cash games with big blinds of $0.50 or less, or tournaments with buy ins of say $20 or less. These seem like low stakes games where I'm sure the main purpose is to meet people and have fun.

What I start to speculate about is when I see higher stakes type games where there can be hundreds of dollars can be won in a given night. I've seen $1/$2 cash games posted as well as tournaments with up to $100 buy in ($25 per rebuy up to $100 max)

My question is how likely is it these games are not running "on the up and up". Is there potential to be cheating strangers here when there is more money on the line? These are private games, so there is not much regulating on the cards being used and procedures. If I got to play with a group of guys regularly, I could get a feel for how fair things were, but I was just wondering if I should have any reservations going in?

I have heard rumours of this guy in the Vancouver area hosting homegames and advertising them on the meetup.com website, and that there was cheating going on at the games by this host. I know of this guy through acquaintances, and doesn't seem to be the most moral or ethical guy. Some people in this forum might know him as well. Without giving too much personal info, his name rhymes with "Bill" and he does busking as a street magician.

Please feel free to share your opinion of poker games around the Vancouver area that are posted on the meetup website.

Personally, I would never go to a home game where there is any real money involved, but safety and "on the up and up" are my number one concern when it comes to recreational poker playing (hence why I limit anything with real money to casino room poker which I find very safe / "on the up and up").

Even if the home game only featured lifetime friends, it's still a robbery target. I've simply heard too many home game robbery stories to ever risk it.

Just like poker: carefully evaluate your risk vs reward, imo.

Not in the Vancouver area, but I’ve played in meetup.com home games. Your concern is warranted, by not generally true. The games I’ve found were just people trying to get extra folks into a game that seems to have dwindled over the years.

Here’s the simple rule: it you are uncomfortable losing that money, whether by bad luck or by getting ripped off, then don’t play in the game.

Otherwise, consider a one time “investment” to feel out the game. Be friendly, have fun. If, after the end of the night, your instincts say don’t ever go back, you don’t.

Even in the shady world of gambling, most people are good people.

I organized a now-defunct poker meetup for a couple of years, and definitely towards the end, as our numbers dwindled, meetup was helpful to fill up a game. Tbh we still need a couple more semi-reg players to make it happen more often, which is why I've posted itt from time to time.

Regarding the game you mentioned, I have heard similar things from trusted people, but I also know good players who have gone there and did not see any problems. I want to point out that you "not giving away personal info" about him, then doing just that, is pretty tactless on your part. Van is a small poker community, and anyone who is a semi-reg at this guy's casino and reads this thread knows exactly who you are talking about, and now knows some rumors you've spread. If you want to spread them, that's your business, but pretending that you didn't want to out the guy, then outing him, smdh kids these days.

(For the record I only know the guy in passing, and have never played in his game. But stacker604, I'm 95% certain the guy in question reads this thread, so gl with that.)

I can vouch for the DT Poker meetup, I know the organizer and have played with him for years, but since you don't know me, I have no idea what good my $0.02 does anyone. Like Warrior said, show up and see.

If anyone wants to be on my list, you can PM me. We don't host much during the summer, everyone's at the beach, but we might sneak a game or two in at some point. I ask for cell # and a bit of personal info in part to have a wee bit of security about knowing who I'm inviting into my game, as well as to weed out people who might not be a good fit.

Home games are iffy.

I enjoy the social aspect as many casino games are just terrible around here filled with grinders just on their ipads or old man coffees... But sometimes i do get worried about security....but also find most home games fizzle out soon anyway.

I would suggest you go to this game once and if you feel iffy just cash out and leave

how's the 5/10 action in Van?
Vancouver, BC Quote

What's 5/10?

The room I play at is almost exclusively 1/3 NL ($300 max), which once in a blue moon attempts to get a regular once-a-week 2/5 NL (I believe $500 - $1K) game going (it seems to come and go).

In my 12+ years of playing, I've literally never seen a 5/T game, but I mostly stick to my room.

Others who are more knowledgeable than me on the other rooms can chime in on this, but my guess is that it's a very rare beast at best?

Some knob posted on this very page about a room that runs 5/T, and a second guy quoted it so it's in two separate posts, but I know, reeding is hard....

Ha, who has the time to read back 5 posts?

Given that it sounds like it's a new game, and a pretty big one at that for this area (I believe that assumption is correct?), I doubt any conclusions can be made on how the game is (or whether it even lasts).

But I've got all of 90 minutes under my belt at 2/5 NL, so what do I know.
