On past trips, I've gotten the best rate by withdrawing Canadian dollars once I was in Canada. They were converted at the bank to bank rate with a 1% transaction fee. Find out what Canadian bank your US bank partners with and hit up their ATM or branch.

But I would appreciate it if anyone has tips for getting bank to bank rates when exchanging back. I remember last time I brought the Canadian dollars back to New York and got screwed out of about 5% by Bank of America

A friend of mine is hosting a poker tournament fundraiser to send his son to Europe for hockey. I'm not sure of all the details yet but I will have them soon. May 9th, 7:00pm in Coquitlam. Expecting 100 players, $50 buy in with rebuys and top ups. Send me a PM if you want to play.

There will be actual poker tables at the fundraiser, not just plastic fold out tables, as well as denominated chips and copag cards for each table.

At some casinos, you can exchange back at the same rate. Save your receipt. Im unsure if there's a transaction charge.

I phoned in about 4pm, got there about 6pm(have 2 hours to get in), got sat about 8pm. Only 2 regulars at my table but most tables had more.

I posted in the other bc thread,

when i played there a while back, the games certainly weren't anything to write home about, but they were definitely playable with the stack sizes (1500 max)

considering all the money in the area, the games could be seen as really bad but w/e

Have the scene improved for the FLHE games at River Rock? The last time I went, the wait lists were barely moving. Or is there a casino other than river rock that you guys would recommend ?

I went to River Rock a couple of times last week. One night they had one table of 2/4 and 3/6 LHE on weekday nights (9pm+) and the second night they only had one table of 3/6. Average waitlist was about 5 names, and I generally got seated in about half an hour. The times I've been there, seemed like 50% of the time the people on the wait list either didn't want their seat or weren't there, so it wasn't as long as I would have guessed.

But with only one table of each, it's going to be hit or miss on how long it takes to get a seat.

The River Rock had 3 2/5 tables running last night. Pretty impressive for a monday. The 1/2 tables were also pretty juicy.

Nice i like the sounds of that! I haven't played much live because I only ever seen one 2/5 table going generally over my small live sample so far.

Not that im able to grind 2/5 right now but if im playing live I dont wana do it playing 1/2 the whole time because the one 2/5 table is full or a bad game or not even running.

If there is more 2/5 regularly I would probably start building a live BR and getting more into the live games

Hi everyone, I'm a former online player from the U.S. who quit poker after Black Friday. Before that I'd been playing about 8 months and was averaging about $25/hour mass-tabling SNGs mostly.

I'm in Texas now and ironically this is about the worst place to be in the world to play Texas Hold 'Em. I used to live in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon) and would love to get back there for the climate, more laid-back atmosphere, and general higher quality of life. I've thought about Portland/Seattle but it seems like Vancouver is a much better option and I'd honestly rather live in Canada anyway.

I have a few questions:

1) I know the cost of living in some parts of Vancouver is super high. Is there anywhere decent I could live for less than $1000 / month?

2) About how much could a decent online player make in the cash games and tournaments in Vancouver? When I was in the U.S. I considered $25/hour plenty due to the lower cost of living. Then again in Canada my medical bills wouldn't be as obscene (uninsured I pay about 12k a year for 3 meds and I don't even have serious health problems) so maybe that would counterbalance the higher cost of living.

3) How do the online games compare now since Black Friday? I'd like to play a mix of live and online games.

4) This is the part that really worries me. I imagine it's pretty difficult to immigrate to Canada as a poker player, so I'm wondering, how do other people do it? Are there other options for living/playing there long term that don't involve citizenship? I'd love to become a Canadian citizen but it seems like this might be very difficult. Will one of you consider marrying me so I can get citizenship?

1) You could find a small 1br in Coquitlam/Burnaby/Port Moody for $1000 or less a mo and there are poker rooms nearby. Or you could split with someone in Richmond/Vancouver.

2) Games are super soft. If you're good you'll be fine.

3) Online is still decent but it's a lot tougher now.

4) Not sure about this one. Probably gonna need a better reason than 'poker player'

edgewater's 2/5 has died because of the shared bad beat and river rock is mostly just colluding asian nits sharing the same bankroll. it's crazy how bad the games are considering how much money is in the city. 1/2 is soft but $15 an hour is still $15 an hour. live poker in this city sucks.

also two of the dealers there were intentionally flashing my hole cards when they dealt. play here at your own peril.

Do 5/10 games never run in Vancouver anymore? The 2/5 or 5/5 whatever it is, how often is it straddled? Also how often/common do you see big pots on 2/5, as in $2K+, do people stack off light and get their draws in?

Some of the info I've gotten is that it can either be nitty filled with regs, or soft.. just trying to get a real sense of these games.. thanks.

Obv Calgary and Edmonton games are better? But don't want to deal with their winter..

I played a couple months as a regular in both the NL and OH games.

Agree that there are a fair number of grinders.
I'll say that variation in action day to day is mostly due to the homegames that run every week around the city. So to answer the above poster, that is why the 5/10 doesn't run anymore. It's now a weekly homegame that will play 10/25 or higher.

Any grinder who plans on getting serious volume in as a live cashgame regular shouldn't have a problem getting in if they know how to handle themselves, but I'd take the over on a month: from 1st full day of grinding -> your first homegame invite. It takes time to develop rapport with staff/rec players/regs. I played a lot of 14+h sessions at edge.

If anyone wants to trade cash for Stars money, hit me up via PM.

So 5/10 doesn't ever run anymore? The large number of online grinders don't ever make it the casinos?

I take it all the 2/5 action is at Hard Rock these days? Is that game worth it for someone who would really prefer to play 5/10? (or maybe higher if it ever runs)

Thinking of moving to Vancouver early-ish 2015 to grind online, play live, and also do side trips to BC/Alberta for a few months.. what's a good website to look for rentals?

Thanks
