Word on the street is that the poker tables will have shuffle machines. Good. The word also is that the Bravo system will not be used. Bad.

what problems would arise from spreading 1/2 ?

It's a small room. 16 tables. If they spread 1-2 you can count on most if not all tables to be just 1-2 no limit. It would still be a busy room with 2-5 no limit as its lowest limit and 4-8 as its lowest fixed limit. It would make for a more diverse room with a variety of games and limits.

What don't you get?

Without 1-2, you are more likely to see mid limit hold'em, stud and mixed games spread.

I like the creativity but this is a terrible idea. 1/2NL is the most popular game in New England rooms because that is the players game of choice. You're a new room looking to lure players from their home room and you think the best way is to NOT offer the game most are looking to play? During the week, Foxwoods runs 4-5 2/5NL games and Mohegan usually one, sometimes two, and these are large established casinos with an existing poker base. It would not be a busy room without offering the games that the players want to play or else they will simply remain where they are especially now that MA players have the New Hampshire option.

re: Twin River Casino (Lincoln, RI)

It's 11:24 as I'm writing this. According to Bravo here are the following games being played right now at Foxwoods and Mohegan:

1 10-20 Big O
3 2-5 NLH (Mohegan)
1 7.50-15 HORSE
5 2-5 NLH (Foxwoods)
1 2-5 PLO
1 20-40 Hold'em
3 20-40 Stud
1 4-8 Hold'em
1 5-10 NLH
1 5-10 Omaha H/L Full Kill
1 75-150 Stud

19 games late Thursday night. Most of these players probably live closer to Twin River than the two CT casinos.

On the Twin River Poker Room Facebook page a guy in dealer training says 1-2 NLHE, 2-5 NLHE and 5-10 stud are what they're being trained for.

Why would you assume that most of these players come from MA/RI as opposed to CT/NY? How many of those 2/5 are there only for 2/5 and not business conference, blackjack, tournament they busted out of, etc? And finally, why didn't you post that while there are 19 non-1/2 games running at these two casinos and greater than that amount of 1/2 games running?

I'm sorry but the numbers don't add up to support your claim.

We are also not factoring in the avid and recreational players that live 20 or 30 minutes away. Ones that would play more often if a room was closer.

They should do what Mohegan should've done - spread the games that Foxwoods doesn't, namely 1-1NL, 1-3NL, and 5-5NL. The room could honestly say it's unique, and meanwhile what players would be unhappy with that?

Players will be unhappy regardless of the games spread. I agree with your idea of running different games. I like the 5-5 NL idea. How about a 1-3NL with a min buy in of 300? Oh, and time pot games would be good for the rooms rep.

Now this is an idea that could certainly work. Many recreational players feel intimidated with a 300 max 1/2 buyin which is why the 1-1 appeals so well to these players at Mohegan. Recreational players in a blue collar area are going to be looking for smaller buy in options and not one where 2/5 is the cheapest option to play which is why they would never go this route.

The 5/5 would rarely go I'd probably stick with 2/5 but otherwise I like your idea.

The 1-2 NL at Foxwoods is the most popular game. No need for 1-1. Players who feel "intimidated" can buy in for $60. Cost (blinds) are only $3 per orbit vs. $2 per orbit. IMHO, the 1-1 game just canabalizes the 1-2 game.

As it is at Mohegan too. Would you prefer having a bunch of people at 1/2 buying in for $60? Everyone has their own opinion but having multiple players with $30-50 in front of them at 1/2 is not good for the game so I don't understand how you feel it cannibalizes the 1/2 game. Keep that game going and have a list of 10-15 waiting for it......keep the $30 stacks off 1/2. That would be my preference.

The 1/2 games rarely have more than 1 or at most 2 people sitting down with $60 and virtually no one with a "$30-$50" BTAIM, I suspect that the reason we may disagree is b/c I play 1/2 exclusively.

I just called Twin River and was told that the Poker Room wouldn't be opening until the end of the year because of "technical difficulties"!??

Don't worry too much, it's probably not really "technical", they're not gonna tell you over the phone that the gaming commission (RI State Lottery) are the biggest pains in the arse!
That's probably the real issue.

When leaders accustomed to the lottery are now making poker decisions you know there will be decisions that will make our head spin. One quote I read this morning from the head of the gaming commission is "We still haven't decided how many poker tables we will have open at any given time."

It is up to you to market and promote the game so the players DECIDE how many are open by showing up and putting their name on a list.

Another quote I saw in the paper was from a blackjack dealer who is being cross-trained for poker talking about how "it's a comfortable pace, nice and slow." Oh boy.

re: Twin River Casino (Lincoln, RI)

Well, lottery made gaming decisions for table games when they opened. Again, it's all about them learning the ins and outs.
Example: lottery didn't wanna approve the cage being able to sell chips to poker players.

That's just one ridiculous example.

I did find out the rake is up to $5 with no extra $ for promos/bad beats

Just be patient.

It will be here when it's here.

We are fortunate they are finally opening one at all.

Not to throw cold water on this, but I think there's still a measurable chance this never actually opens. And with every delay the percentage grows.
