But the difference in the amount of house you get compared to south Tampa for the same money makes it worth it for most. If you are plannng to play full time, or play 2/5 or higher, the Hard Rock is really your best option. So IMO you really shouldn't worry much about staying close to Derby Lane.
Thank you!

Went late so I didnt get a good visual on the area driving in.

When I go back to real work, it will possibly be at the AFB, so I'm looking at South Tampa as it looks good as a mid point between DL and THR, but also keeps me close to the AFB. Looking a little further out, any info on the area around Gandy? Not interested in city living, so we ruled out St Pete downtown area. Probably buying a house so we will be making a few more trips down to look around more before we pull the trigger. Any other areas worth looking at? Any areas specifically in St Pete to avoid? Thanks for any info.
What do you mean by "city living"? Do you want countryside only, or suburbs okay? Nothing in Pinellas County is rural - all city or suburbs, but many nice neighborhoods - gated or deed-restricted communities are your best bet. Same with the immediate Tampa area - you have to stretch outside the suburbs if you want countryside.

Much of St. Pete south of downtown is bad territory. On the Pinellas County side, your best bet is the Feather Sound neighborhood and surrounds. On the Tampa side, look in the areas south of the Hard Rock: Brandon, Riverview, etc. The further south you go, the more rural, but the further your commutes. East Tampa is probably not a place you will want to live. Palmetto Beach might be good, depending on your house budget. Also consider Temple Terrace and Carrollwood - you won't have the easy trip to Derby Lane, but fine for Hard Rock and the AFB.

Take any warnings about commute times with a grain of salt. How bad you find it depends on where you originate from. Compared to congested areas like L.A., Chicago, NYC, etc., it's nothing. Rush hour traffic might add 30 to 60 minutes commute time at the worst times, or less depending on your route.

City living to me is living in a high rise. Im in the DC area now so suburbia is fine. We are budgeting 300k or less towards a house and we are good with a small house. We are actually looking for smaller this time. No kids, only a cat and a dog.

Appreciate the insight!

$300k in most parts of Tampa will get you a fine house with plenty of room.

If you enjoy walkable neighborhoods with lots of restaurants & bars, you should also consider Seminole Heights.

Hey everyone!

I'll be moving to Tampa soon. I play 2/5 for a living in the northeast. Tired of winters and ready to relocate. Tampa is my choice for many, many reasons.

I just wanted to know what you guys thought of the live games there. Are they standardly bad, worse than bad as a travel/tourist hub, or actually solid?

Also, any sort of lifestyle recommendations would be awesome! Any tips or suggestions on the area! Hopefully some of you want to grab a drink and discuss hands!

Martin Luther King Blvd is always hopping for some saucy nightlife. I think they're renaming it to Wayne Newton Lane soon though.

tampa doesnt really have any decent poker rooms. with the lone exception of the dogtrack but its in a kind of dangerous area. but the players are bad there, especially the PLO players.

you would be far better off going to texas if u want to make your living playing poker. then u would have about 50 decent poker rooms. the exact same weather, but with less rain. and the same type of governor who supports your civil liberties as florida has

or maybe fort lauderdale where u could choose from Hialeah, or the Big Easy poker rooms. 2 good rooms at least, which is far more than u will find it tampa

also NL really isnt a logical option. almost everyone plays it perfectly now. better off switching to omaha where people are still learning and dont know what theyre doing

What??

Dog track has decent games but the Hard Rock is one of the biggest, busiest and most profitable rooms in the country!

Assuming you're trolling as currently playing 2/5 is like playing home games 10 years ago lol

I'm writing to see if any of the O8 Players frequent this sub. Tampa and St. Pete used to have some of the best O8 games and could feed players almost all day and night in most cases. This was pre-covid...although it started to hurt a bit when Hard Rock switched to nine handed several years ago and moved the poker room.

Did this turn into a home game or get moved or anything?

This is what I’ve noticed since living here. Tampa area has 4 poker rooms:

Hard Rock Casino in Tampa
Derby Poker Club in St. Pete
Tampa Bay Downs (Silks) in NE Tampa
TGT (Lucky’s) in Tampa

Omaha:
I’ve only been to 3 of these. So can’t really say anything about Lucky’s but Monday is the day to play Omaha supposedly. I rarely see Omaha at Derby. 2/2 with Rock usually runs at the Hard Rock and sometimes 5/5 with rock and even some bigger on weekends. Silks has been slow and rarely go there anymore.

NL Holdem:
Derby - mainly 1/2 and 1/3 games. 1/2 is $200 max and you get a bunch of cheap people buying in short. The games are pretty bad. 1/3 is $500 max and those games can be pretty good at times. 2/5 rarely gets going unless it’s the weekend and it might only be 1 or 2 tables and then they break.

Silks - Again slow. Maybe a couple table of 1/2 or 1/3 running. Hasn’t been worth my time going there.

Hard Rock - 24 hours every day. 1/2 is $300 max. Some tables suck but some can be good. Table selection is key. 2/5 is $1000 max and usually 3-7 tables going until late where it drops to 1 table.

TGT - again haven’t been but doesn’t sound like it’s in a great part of town.
