I am a visiting player who played at the NLH 2/3 tables today.

I witnessed a few regs belittle and ridicule this Asian male recreational player who was playing in what seemed like a fishy way, while running like god and winning pots.

This resulted in him leaving the table with his $1.3k stack and playing at another 2/3 table where he sat down with like $400.

Do regs that play at Sydney Star not bother with making an effort to make fish feel happy and comfortable at the table so that they will want to stay longer and play more pots?

Pretty disappointing to see him go because I was hoping to win a big pot off him.

I don't mean to name and shame but there was an older looking man (shaved head, pink shirt) who was especially savage and vocal about how terrible the recreational's play was.

There is a minimum of one bitter losing reg per 2/3 table in the Star, who will absolutely try to make a lucky fish feel uncomfortable with disparaging and sarcastic remarks. I think it’s a house rule or something. Also, I think they go harder on Asian players because they are assumed to be less aggressive and/or violent. They feel safer mouthing off to a guy who is unlikely to tell them to eff off and potentially escalate to meeting them in the carpark later on.

Was shaved head guy vaguely mediterrean looking?

It is just pretty disheartening to see all that money walk away and sit at a table 2m away.

Another example is when the recreational makes a speech and has shaking hands as he puts a massive raise in on the river. We know that this comes across super strong and no one is surprised when he has the nuts at showdown. After the hand is tabled, 2 other players feel the need to tell the rec, 'I pegged you for a full house when you gave the horrible acting job'.

This might encourage them to not make it so obvious when they have the nuts.

Don't want to play the blame game (so i'm not going to describe that reg in any more detail)

Just trying to narrow it down. There’s the bitter old losing Greek/Leb/whatever regs and the bitter old losing Aussie regs. The losing Asian regs dont seem to get as bitter, maybe they just embrace the degeneracy better.

I've only been to the Star twice since starting to get back into poker 3 months ago and I think I know who you are talking about. Had a guy fitting that description on my table last Saturday afternoon talking bad about guys who left the table etc.

Have to say since the last time I was there to play poker which was like 6 years ago I'm pretty happy with the improvements to the poker room. Phone chargers in the tables, free water right in the room (and tea and coffee during the day? - been there in the arvo on 2 Saturdays and it seems gone from about 6pm), free Wifi, being able to eat at the tables and decent amount of TV's for the sport to keep people at the tables.

Free tea and coffee is provided when waitress service isn’t on, during the week and weekend mornings. No idea why they don’t want to seek drinks to between 40 and 100 people but there you go. It kind of suits me because I don’t drink when I play at Star and I like free coffee (MAWG working towards OMC). On the other hand, I want people who want to drink to have easily available booze.

There are issues with Star, including absurd rake, moronic rules decisions by the floor and aforementioned miserable regs. On the plus side, a lot of the stronger 2/3 players are still terrible at poker. The room is well lit and looks nice. The place is clean. There is 24/7 poker running. Dealers are generally polite and reasonably well trained.

Swings and roundabouts.

Yeah that makes sense for the free tea and coffee. I don't drink while I play either but yeah don't understand the logic of not having drink service availble during the week even just at night. Is the bar inside the room open at least or would you need to go to the sports bar?

They close the bar and tell the waitresses not to work the poker room. If you want a drink, yeah you have to walk to the sports bar.

I don't understand the logic, it probably pees the waitresses off as well since the poker players routinely tip - something about having chips instead of cash seems to loosen wallets. Tough to get tips in Australia so yeah.

EDIT

Tipping might also be because whoever recruits the waitresses only hires young lookers and has them wear tight fitting slit dresses.

There is still free parking for playing poker? Going to be around in a bit and the website is kind of ambiguous. Thx for help.

I honestly think the 2/3 at Star is the softest $3 blind game anywhere in the world. Play it whenever you can and just be prepared to move to a different table if you get sat at a dry one

I'm curious if basic poker etiquette is different in Australia.

I was playing 1/3 Omaha at the Star over the weekend and a hand went down where an older guy (OG) tabled his hand in a ~$400 pot and declared 2-pair. The other player showed a straight and the dealer mucked the OG hand.

It turned out he made a backdoor baby flush (5-6). He was already standing up and going for a smoke but I called the flush and the dealer got the supervisor to check the cameras and the pot went the correct way.

A couple hands later the dealer turns to me and says "You shoudn't say anything, it's the players responsibility to call their hand correctly." Me: "I wouldn't have to if you did your job" Her: "Watch yourself if you play the bigger games".

My understanding is that cards speak and all players are obligated to correct dealer errors.
